His Lady Mistress Kindle Edition
Downtrodden servant or gracious lady?
When Max, Earl Blakehurst, meets Verity Scott he sees a downtrodden servant. He doesn’t recognize her as the daughter of a colonel under whom he used to serve, the girl he’d once helped years before. The life Verity’s now living is untenable. So he proposes a shocking solution—he will set her up as his mistress.
It’s only once that Verity’s finally agreed, once Max is beginning to lose his heart to her, that he discovers her true identity. Max is taken aback; he would never have suggested this lady become his mistress. Now, to avoid scandal, they’ll have to marry!
“If you like house parties, society balls, snotty matriarchs who need a set down, or a brooding hero in need of a strong, compassionate wife, then His Lady Mistress is sure to please.” —The Zest Quest

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2010I will admit, I had some little frustrations with this book. Verity's issues I can sympathize with and they seem believable. Her eating habits (and likely PTSD) are to be expected when you put them into the context of what she went through. And if you remember that in the context of those times those issues were barely talked about, let alone treated, as we would today it is admirably realistic.
Max's issues I had a little more frustration with. The whole vow to himself for Richard seemed believable enough, but the vow to his mother (while still pretty believable) made me want to smack something (preferable Max or his mother). But I don't think that detracts from the book. Anything that is written, the reader may have some problems with, and as long as they are realistic enough I don't think they make the book any less enjoyable to read. After all, if the characters made no mistakes, it would be a REALLY short story!
Max's behavior towards Verity is, while somewhat realistic considering this is a guy that's been through the horrors of war, a little less forgivable. However, the reader's ability to see that he really does regret and hate himself for it, softens it. I don't know if its just me, but the angsty parts where he realized his mistakes made me cry. Whether or not Verity should have forgiven him, at least Max realizes his errors, doesn't try to justify or rationalize them, and really does try to make up for them. And his approach to everything didn't make me squirm or cringe like SOME books...cough cough TWILIGHT!
Max and Verity geniunely care about and love each other, and while like any marriage they argue and even hurt each other (note: Max NEVER actually hurts Verity physically!) with their words and actions, I think its a little overkill to say that their relationship is abusive.
The things I liked most about this book were the characters: Max, Verity, Richard, and (suprisingly) Alemeria. Alemeria is a character that you LOVE to hate. Some of the thing she says and does are so infuriatingly outrageous that you're caught between wanting to smack her or laugh until you cry. Max, despite his demons (and acting like a "damned fool"), is funny and fiercely protective. Verity is sweet, loyal, brave, and awesomely actually has a temper that can stand up against the male ones in the book. I am SO tired of meek girls, that Verity temper (and her cutting Celia's hair off) were some of my favorite moments! Despite some of her actions, she has a greater sense of self-respect than most heroines that made her refreshing. And my favorite, Richard, was an AWESOME supporting character. One that I am SOO glad that got a book for himself! While he was rather awful to Verity at the beginning (and only out of a sense of loyalty to Max, NOT selfishness), he saw the error of his ways early on and WAAY before Max! After that he became the brother-in-law that ALL of us want to have!
So, this book while I admit to having some frustrations with it, these issues were only ones that were realistic and/or believable and in some cases, actually added to the book rather than taking away from it! This is a really good book, and I think the best thing I can say about it is that it is SOO good that (unlike in most romance novels that I've seen) the plot is so good that, even though the sex scene fit in with it and are some really good sex scenes, they almost not needed to make this book an amazing read. I recommend this book to EVERYONE!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2010I downloaded the Kindle edition because it was free. I didn't expect much frankly.
However I was pleased to find it was actually quite good. It's not on league with fine literature by any means, but still completely tolerable!
It's slightly atypical as far as romances go. For one, it's quite long for a romance. Secondly, the characters are actually developed beyond the one dimensional "He was hot with big muscles" and "She was sexy with curves where they should be" nonsense.
The story is not terribly unusual, the man is a pompus fool who eventually realizes this fact and becomes the distressed damsel's hero. However, it's done in such a way that you're kept interested and wondering...what happens next, how will Mr. Hero screw up this time?
The long and short of it is, download it while it's free to your amazing device known as "Kindle." If you miss out on it while it's free, I'd still pay $3 to $4 bucks for this read, personally.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2009Main Characters: Verity (Selina) & Max (Lord Blakehurst)
Story Summary:
Verity's father committed suicide when she was fifteen. After she reported it, their home was raided and all of her father things were confiscated. This is because of how the taking of one's own life is viewed. Her father was also to be buried in an unmarked grave. Verity followed the men who have her father's body to the grave, so that she could give him somewhat of a proper sendoff. After the men leave, she tries to plant bulbs there to mark his grave so that she might be able to identify it at some time in the distant future when she came to visit.
At the grave she meets Max for first time. [Verity's father was Max's colonel and he took a sword for Max and saved his life. Her father ended up losing an arm because the wound from that injury became infected.] So Max helps her finish her ceremony and plant the bulbs then walks her home where she is to be picked up by her relatives.
Verity ends up in the hands of her relatives who turn out to be a bunch of horrible people. She is basically treated like Cinderella, except they beat her and made her change her name to Selina . They also reported to others that she was dead.
Five years have passed and our hero, Max comes back into the picture on the guise that he is searching for Verity to make sure she is being well taken care of.
Verity recognizes him but he doesn't recognize her. Verity who is assumed Selina is sexually harassed by her cousin and Max intervened. Max then concerns himself with the safety of Selina and tries to protect her from the Farringdons. He and she find that he can only protect her while he is still there.
So he approaches her and asked her to be his mistress to escape. She says no, then thinks about it for a couple days then agrees. To completely accept his offer she had to sleep with him. He ends up taking her virginity. Then he discovers who she really is and he can't disgrace the memory of his colonel so he marries her but not without assuming she trapped him.
From this point forward there is a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications that keep the two apart or "not happily wedded and in love". They eventually effectively communicate to one another their feelings and they live happily ever after.
My Opinion:
The story had a GREAT start! I was so excited when I started, I'm like "I got a free book on Kindle that would actually be worth money to purchase," oh boy was I wrong. The book is absolutely brilliant up until the point the hero re-enters the story. From that point onward the book began its downward spiral.
Max character is absolutely horrid, he's a creep. He is on this mission to save Miss Verity Scott after 5 years. What was he doing during the intervening years that he never thought to go and check on her? What makes it so important that he checked now? I actually think the author used this as a way to make it okay for at the time Max showed up, he and Verity could shag. That would have been fine but it definitely needed more development to make it more believable. Like he had been trying to find her or he had some other urgent business to attend to.
So Max gets there, he sees how they treat Selina and he wants to protect her. To save her, he offers her a position as his mistress. How magnanimous of him? Please do not think he's doing it out of the kindness of his heart, he's just as creepy as the cousin who wants to force himself on her, he's just better polished and more manipulative. She refuses his offer, thinks about it after a week or so and accepts but makes propositions of her own. But before Max accepts her propositions, granted he knows she's in dire straits and desperate to escape the Farringdons, she has to sleep with him. What a creep!? And he even remarks, she has to come willingly, how willing is that? She has no other options!!
The author tries to disguise this little act of rape, in MHO, by trying to make Verity willing as she has liked Max since that night he helped her at her father's grave. Appalled!
From this point on, Max character continues to decline. He is horrible to Verity, he calls her a whore and implies loads of other disgusting things about her. He, quite often I might add, jumps to conclusions and acts rashly. He was downright cruel, in my opinion, there was no redemption for his character. I say that because his first reaction after he assumed the worse was to hurt, humiliate, and demean her. Even if he though the worse of her, Verity had nothing, she had no one, she had been tortured her entire life, even the little Max knew of it, he even knew that he was Verity's first. Max had family, money, influence, prestige, women chasing him, everything you could ever want. What kind of person uses their power like that knowing what he knew?
The one bright spot was Verity's character but the author never addresses the issues so poignant with her. Like how all of these bad things that happened to her affected her and the healing that needed to take place. Or Verity rediscovering herself, or making peace with her father's memory and death. The author glossed over a lot.
Next up, the plot device, series of misunderstandings and miscommunications. It would have been fine for a little part of the book but it is the entire plot! Nothing else enters the fray. By the end of the book I wanted to shoot both characters and be done with it. I neither cared if they resolve their issues or reached their goals, I just wanted it over.
It became increasingly tedious to read. I often wonder if the person who wrote the first part (first third of the book) wrote the last part because of the drastic difference between the two.

A very good story, kept me glued to each page. Not written in the usual style. A must-have holiday read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
I was pleasantly surprised with this book; the annoyance I had for Max and his persistance was just as pleasant as my instant liking of his character. It's a typical Damsel in Distress book; slightly fairytale-like but enjoyable all the same. I thought that perhaps Max found out far too soon that Verity was not who she said she was; Elizabeth Rolls could have played with that some more, and I found that all too soon Max had adopted his defensive persona rather than continue to be the chivalrous knight in shining armour that made him so likeable in the first place.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and would read others by the same author. If you are a romantic at heart and like a bit of a fairytale with it, I recommend trying this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Disappointing, very far fetched story line and unlikely reactions from characters. Struggling with this, 70% the way through so may as well finish it - kept thinking it would get better! Have read many many historical fictions in my time and this is one of the oddest and most boring. Sorry.
