4.1 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

The former Brookstone marketing guru gives “proof of the fact that even in the face of this illness, a person can lead a rewarding and fulfilling life” (Howard Lester, former Williams-Sonoma CEO).

For more than forty-five years, Steve Millard has struggled with bipolar disorder. At his lowest, he was on the absolute brink of suicide, looking down into the abyss. Through his own methods of dealing with this disease, arrived at by trial and error, and the generous help of friends, and the teachings of a wonderful support group called Recovery Inc., he not only survived, he prospered, founding one of the most successful and profitable businesses in the direct marketing industry.
A Bipolar Life is the story of his struggle.

“I have witnessed many of [Steve’s] struggles with bipolar disorder and can only imagine how difficult they are for him. I have also witnessed his high, his incredible zest for life and the ability to live life to its fullest. But equally important, I have witnessed his marketing skills and how he helped pioneer the catalog and direct marketing industry. Those skills were a major part of the dynamic growth of the Brookstone Company.” —Doug Anderson, former President, Brookstone

“Steve Millard was a good friend of L.L. Bean and a catalog marketing consultant instrumental to our success. He was upbeat and outgoing in his public life but quietly and courageously dealt with his emotional illness.” —Leon Gorman, former CEO L.L. Bean

"During the many years of my personal and professional relationship with Steve Millard, I have never been witness to any indication of his personal struggles with bipolar disorder. Obviously, his life-long determination to confront the obstacles and challenges this has presented is commendable.  His professional success, his contribution to his industry and his community is proof of the fact that even in the face of this illness, a person can lead a rewarding and fulfilling life. His willingness to share his story with others earns him my complete admiration."

I found this book very interesting. I was working at Brookstone part time when it first started. Steve was there working on his mailings. A very nice man. He had the nicest, most encouraging smile. I really didnt know what the mailings were about so I wasnt much of a help. So this book explained it all. I consider myself a friend of his. Always enjoyed his company. I knew nothing about his struggles while I worked at Brookstone. He has since left this world. I will miss you Steve.

I must admit that when I first started reading this book, I found it repetitive. As I read along I liked the way Stephen kept to simple digestible points. Like Stephen I never realised that some disciplines I had kept to, to manage the condition was called cognitive therapy. Thank you Stephen for helping me feel less alone and more empowered to how I can find new tools to keep fighting.

Nice to know someone can explain what I can't to anyone in the world. I don't feel alone and useless as a disabled person with Bipolar. I thought this book would be about how to deny bipolar even exists and that you should make 60 million also but I was wrong. He states how he learned and managed his illness to pragmatically overcome this dreaded illness. I will cherish my copy of this book forever. Thanks Mr. Millard.

I love this book. I want to read it over and over. As soon as I got it in the mail, I started reading it right then. I could not put the book down. I stayed up until 5 am so I could read through all the way to the end.

Hello all.I am a bi polar person who just recently went thru my worse depression cycle. Nothing was helping me so I went to library and got this book and when I read it, it was like It was written just for me. So I came to Amazon and.bought the book so I could use a highlighter on certain sentences. This is a must have book. I'd like to thank Steve for saving my life by having the courage to write this book.

Steve's many clients (and I was one) knew him as that smart, witty guy impeccably dressed sporting a bow tie and driving a successful business in a highly competitive field.
This enjoyable book profiles the life-long struggle Steve had in overcoming his dark cloud of depression. But it is more than just a personal profile. Millard outlines how he was able to overcome his illness and control his condition. He takes you through the many false starts, the failures and finally triumph when he finds the right combination of professional help and medication.
If you or a loved one is suffering from depression this book is the inspiration as well as a roadmap for change.

Mr. Millard has clearly illustrated in his book how it's ok to admit your faults, but it's what you do after that that will eventually define you. Hideing your problems isn't the answer. I have had the extreme pleasure of not only reading this book, but also casting a fly rod with the author. A man I have admired for over 30 years and will strive to emulate forever.
