Philosophies of Art & Beauty: Selected Readings in Aesthetics from Plato to Heidegger Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

This anthology is remarkable not only for the selections themselves, among which the Schelling and the Heidegger essays were translated especially for this volume, but also for the editors' general introduction and the introductory essays for each selection, which make this volume an invaluable aid to the study of the powerful, recurrent ideas concerning art, beauty, critical method, and the nature of representation. Because this collection makes clear the ways in which the philosophy of art relates to and is part of general philosophical positions, it will be an essential sourcebook to students of philosophy, art history, and literary criticism.

This book is am immense work spanning the philosophies of art and beauty from Ancient to Modern times. The history of thought from art and beauty as aesthetic cognition to the modern model of art and beauty as a facet of cognitive processes is thoroughly presented. It is an intense journey but we’ll worth the effort.

I did a report on Martin Heidegger and used this book as a reference. This book refers to a selective group of philosophers poignant view on aestheticism.

Only bought this book for class, and I usually don't mind what I have to read in class. But this was such a bore and a headache to read. I do like the pretty rainbow ont he cover though. haha :)

I bought this second hand from an Oxford used book store in 1999; ever since it has been an indispensable reference that I return to time and again. In recent years, however, it has become clear that the lack of the inclusion of Thomas Aquinas, a once in two millennia intellect, is an oversight that does injustice to the topic.

As a student, I bought a copy of this fully intending to read it. It ended up back in the shop as I failed to get too far past the introduction. Thirty years on and I was tempted by having another go. This new copy is now sitting on my shelf every bit as unread as the first. It's a great book - hence the five stars - but for a full review you may have to wait another thirty years.
