Print & Stamp Lab: 52 Ideas for Handmade, Upcycled Print Tools (Lab Series) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 113 ratings

"Tells readers how to turn everyday materials and objects into custom stamps and printmaking tools . . . The graphics are colorful and inspiring." —Barbara Delaney, Cloth Paper Scissors

Artist and popular workshop instructor Traci Bunkers can turn just about anything into an interesting stamp, printing block, or tool. In this book, she shows readers how to see overlooked, everyday objects in a new way, and how to "MacGyver" them like she does.

You'll learn to create fifty-two easy-to-use print blocks and stamp tools, all from inexpensive, ordinary, and unexpected materials—string, spools, bandages, flip flops, ear plugs, rubber bands, school erasers, and a slew of other repurposed and upcycled items. The book also shows how to use those simple tools to make gorgeous multi-layered prints and patterns that can be used to enhance journal covers, stationery, fabrics, accessories, and more.

Review

Bunkers calls her work “alternative printmaking” and tells readers how to turn everyday materials and objects into custom stamps and printmaking tools.  …The graphics are colorful and inspiring, the instructions concise and easy to follow.  Your probably already have everything you need to get started. - Barbara Delaney “In the Mix”, Cloth Paper Scissors, July/August 2010

Traci Bunkers is a passionate and quirky self-employed mixed-media & fiber artist living in Lawrence, Kansas. "I love rusty things, glitter glue, old books to cut up and cheap cameras. I'm smiling when my hands are dirty with paint or when I've altered a camera or something to use as a printing tool. It means I'm doing what I love--making art and doing things with my hands. Lucky for me, I do what I love for a living." Even though the DIY and repurposing life styles are now in vogue, for this self-proclaimed love child of MacGyver, reusing and repurposing have always been her way of life as a creative way to problem solve and make ends meet. Through her one-woman business Bonkers Handmade Originals, she sells her nifty creations such as hand-dyed spinning fibers and yarns, original rubber stamps, handmade books, kits and original artwork. "One of my superpowers is that I can turn just about anything into an interesting stamp, printing block, or tool," writes Traci Bunkers, author of this thoroughly enjoyable and highly creative how-to manual that lays out cool printmaking projects for every week in the year. Each project comes with clear instructions, detailed materials lists, well photographed examples, and expert tips. Perhaps the most important thing that Traci brings to this book is a spirit of adventure, an artistic license that offers the reader permission to have fun and get funky with colors, textures, and patterns.

As an experienced printmaker, I was a bit skeptical whether this book was right for me, but I find Traci's projects engaging, her instructions clear and precise, and there's a little something on every page to inspire me to kick it up a notch and have some fun. She offers practical tips about foraging for materials in every unlikely "art supply" store you can imagine --from Home Depot to the Dollar Store-- and provides excellent suggestions for upcycling tired, old items into beloved art pieces.

I almost didn't look inside this book because the cover was so unattractive in my view. But I'm glad I did. This book is full of ideas and the instructions are good. This book is an inspiration for making art out of everyday objects. Great for working with kids or getting ideas for classroom projects. Or stretching your imagination.

I have bought a fair number of how-to books on the topics of mixed media and paper art, and I have to say that this is one that I will be using on a regular basis. The ideas are simple enough to implement in minimum time and with everyday materials (mostly), but lend themselves to endless invention and creative twists.

This is not a book about how to make complicated, single-purpose artistic inventions, nor does it focus on a printed gallery of artwork. Instead you can think of Print and Stamp Lab as a manual, one that you can grab from the shelf to be creating awesome layers in your artwork in no time flat.

SUCH great ideas and fun things to use for printmaking!! Inexpensive, found, free...all things an Art teacher looks for to introduce students to making creative prints, are in this book. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to add interest to any piece of art, all projects are easy and quick, but with really artistic results.
This is my new bible for printmaking ideas for my students and for my own artwork.

I ordered this book as a gift for a friend. I couldn't resist peeking inside. The book makes a person look at commond items as a means to create very unique patterns for cardmaking or scrapbooking or even making wrap for gifts. I think my friend will enjoy the book and I'm looking forward to some work-days to try out these techniques with her.

This book did not disappoint... I love it! In fact, I love all of the Lab Series books: Collage Lab, Drawing Lab, and now Print & Stamp Lab. The book takes a "hands on" approach when introducing the reader to ideas and techniques... and it's full of great pictures for the visual learner (which most artists are). I consider this book to be a valuable addition to my library of art instruction resources... I use it for both inspiration and clarity of things I want to try.

What a lovely interesting book! This has so many fascinating ideas for stamping and printing. Different ways of rolling on a pattern, or making your own design of stamp or patterned brayer. Things I've not thought of.
Wonderful!

I have purchased two copies of this book. I let someone borrow my first copy and it was never returned. I have used this book with children and with adults and had great results. It is extremely well done. Instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The supplies needed are low cost and available in most households or at the nearest hardware or $ store.

This is one of the most useful arts and crafts books I have purchased in recent years and I buy a lot of books.

E' un libro che offre spunti a chi si avvicina al mondo della stampa "homemade".
Gli esempi sono interessanti alternative all'utilizzo di strumenti e prodotti professionali.
Non sempre le spiegazioni sono sufficientemente approfondite.

5.0 out of 5 stars frisch, innovativ, kreativ
Reviewed in Germany on July 17, 2010
Ich besitze mittlerweile alle 3 Bücher in dieser Quarry Serie - "Print and Stamp - "Collage" - "Drawing for mixed-media artists" -
