Paris Hangover: A Novel Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 53 ratings

A glamorous fish-out-of-water first novel, Paris Hangover stars Klein, a just-escaped New Yorker with trunk-fulls of fabulous footwear but without the significant relationship she'd really expected and longed to have by now, in her mid-thirties. Fleeing a live-in lover and their sleek Tribeca triplex as well as a career in fashion, Klein stars over in Paris-in a tiny walk-up in the 6th that she had to lie (in broken Franglais) and write a bad check to get, only to discover that, among other things, Parisian apartments don't come with kitchens.
Living out of her ten piece of (Louis Vuitton, natch) luggage, Klein plunges into the mysterious world of French men and dating. She muddles her way through: the sexy Renaud, the prototypical Frenchman; dating three men named Jean simultaneously; and one completely wrong Monsieur Married Man, who wants Klein for his very well-kept mistress.
Set against a backdrop of knowing references to Paris and its unique manners and mores,
Paris Hangover is ultimately a very satisfying modern romance as Klein falls-- possibly permanently--for the least likely man to catch her eye.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Lauren Klein (now just Klein, thank you) is a corn-fed Wisconsin girl who escaped to the Big Apple, hoping to become a designer of haute couture. At age 34, she is a successful "fashion consultant," with all the trappings of living large: Tribeca loft, closet full of couture, and a French industrialist boyfriend 15 years her senior. But, suddenly, it just all feels so empty--why? Mais bien sur, because Klein isn't following her dream of moving to Paris. So, in true don't-look-before-you-leap fashion, she is on that plane to Paree in one week. What follows is a chronicle of her attempt to set up shop in a city where she doesn't really speak the language and where housing is impossible to find. Oh, and there's lots of sex, too. As Klein tells us repeatedly, the girl likes sex. (Someone should clue heterosexual men in on the subset of chick lit in which the female protagonist just can't get enough and just can't stop talking about it.) Heavy reading, no (despite the heavy breathing); but good fun for Francophiles and expats. Beth Leistensnider

Every month on my blog I choose a book that will let me escape into another city, time, place...
This month (November) I went to Paris with Klein (my new hero, the main character).

The most enjoyable two years (book time) spent with a sharp expat from New York in Paris. Klein is so honest, funny and real. She doesn't take herself too seriously, but at the end of the day is a deeper character then I expected to get from this book.

The book describes Paris so beautifully... I kept a laptop close at hand whenever Klein would make a reference to a store, restaurant, street so I could truly envision being there with her. By the way did I mention she is hilarious and charming-to-die (written in Klein fashion). Also freetranslation.com was my bestfriend for the tiny snippets of French she put in there (which was highly appreciated).

This book is one of those books that gives you a warm feeling at the end, that leaves you with a smile knowing that you are going to miss this exquisite novel. It is a fast, beautiful read. Truly enjoyed it.

The whole month of of November 2010 on my blog was dedicated to Paris and the places described in Paris Hangover.

Thank you Kirsten Lobe for a great read!

I enjoyed this book a lot. Having been to Paris many times, I could tell the author was familiar with the area. It is very easy to forget this is a fiction book because it flowed so well from a diary perspective. It didn't hurt that there is an actual art gallery owned by an Alexandre in the area where the book it set! All of it makes you wonder how much is really fiction! The snarky comments were funny and I felt like I was really on the journey with the author. I have fantasized about moving to Paris so to be able to experience the apartment hunt and daily life issues in Paris was exciting. I enjoyed reading about the dinner parties and navigating dating in Paris it was almost like getting a chance experience that for myself. Very fun book!

Good book for 20-30 somethings, Fun, quick read. Parts of the book are hilarious, but the constant manhunting gets a bit old. I did take notes however, on the different restos and cafes she mentions, for my future trip to Paris.

I bought this as an airplane read (actually, going to Paris) and while it occupied some of my travel I think I might have become less intelligent after reading this. I almost get the feeling that the author is someone who is actually pretending they are a young woman who worked in fashion and moved to France--it just read as such an in genuine story to me. The narrator was jokesy, not self-aware, and vapid, and the entire book read like a long blog entry written by a teenage boy pretending to be an adult woman in a mocking tone. Not recommended unless (like me) you are stuck on a long flight with nothing else to turn to.

As Klein would say, LOVE THIS BOOK. From beginning to end, I was laughing at all of Klein's misadventures and mishaps in Paris and in love. It is definitely a paperback version of Sex and the City - equal parts Carrie and Samantha, but VERY entertaining.

This book is very very dull...I didn't know half of what the author was trying to point out and what the hell she was talking about! I love everything about Paris, so when I saw this book I thought, "Ok, this should be a pretty decent book. It is about fashion and escaping to wonderful Paris." BUT no. I actually returned this book because I just didn't want this book to be on my shelf period...I read the first few chapters and I couldn't take it anymore, it was giving me a headache! I am def going to look closer to the books I choose.

There are some great descriptions of Paris throughout the book. Having been there myself, it was great to remember this and that while reading. If you're a lover of all things French (as I am), then this will probably be a decent read for you, if for no other reason than just to dream about being in Paris, France!

Loved this book. Enjoyed the "ride" through Paris with this exciting, honest and downright lovely heroine. She writes about the Paris I love - five visits over several years - with wit, intelligence and an artistic eye. Makes me want to go back and stay in the 7th arrondissement for a month to experience the incredible "je ne sais quoi" of Paris.

Urgh - had to stop reading this halfway through, terrible book! Do not read this if you have any interest in the real Paris - the Paris featured here is the one frequented by rich Americans. The writing style was annoying beyond belief, felt I would scream if I had to read the likes of "chic to die" or similar once more. Also, as a French speaker, the misspellings and mistakes in the French (and English for that matter) are just unbearable. Clearly Kirsten Lobe's French really is as horrendous as her heroines is supposed to be. Utter rubbish.
