Your Inner Pharmacy: Taking Back Our Wellness Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

Shift to a healthy mindset—and add years to your life!

In the United States, almost one-third of the population lives with a chronic disease such as osteoarthritis, asthma, GERD and heartburn, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or anxiety/depression and mood disorders.

Most chronic conditions are self-induced and are a product of our lifestyles and the result of an imbalance of chemicals that our own bodies produce. The good news is that
Your Inner Pharmacy offers realistic options that can give you five, ten, even twenty more years of quality time that can delay, postpone, and often minimize the onset of chronic disease. By devoting ten percent of your leisure time to "healthy aging" activities (roughly five hours a week), you can affect the progression of these preventable chronic diseases.

Unlike people with miracle diets or theories to fix parts of your life, Dr. Blaich shows us a total picture of how to live, making the most of what we have been given and balancing that with what we can do to minimize our individual shortcomings--those things that define us as much as our strengths do....Every time I stand before an orchestra and give an upbeat, I thank Robert Blaich. "One of the great memories I have of Bob is when he cautiously intruded into my life and invited himself to be my personal physician at the 1984 Olympic games. Your Inner Pharmacy was an easy read for me because Dr. Blaich doesn't just present facts and advice, he also tells a series of compelling stories about people he had treated (like Dr. Tom) and how their eyes were opened to the magic of alternative healing techniques curing their chronic maladies. Yet, Dr. Blaich points out that Traditional Western Medicine (TWM) does excel at acute care and trauma care. His overview of how these two treatment philosophies can complement each other is one of the most balanced I've encountered.

In a book of moderate length (237 pages) Dr. Blaich manages to shoehorn in a description of many cutting-edge alternative healing techniques (such as applied kinesiology and cranio sacral therapy), along with most of the health-creating and health-restoring habits and techniques a person would need to follow in order to enjoy a long and healthy life. This book can serve as one of the foundational references in one's personal health library, ideally to be re-read annually as a reminder of what would constitute a nearly ideal personal health regimen. I have read several hundred health-related books in my life, and this one rates as one of the best.

If you are on any medications you need to read this. If you are not on any medications & wish to stay off you must read this. Dr. Blaich explains in an easy to understand way on the basics of why chronic disease is taking over the human body. He also explains how you can get your "inner Pharmacy" working like it should.

A friend and I signed up for Dr. Blaich's continuing education class at DU. We were just looking for an interesting class to take this fall. Little did we know that this class would end up changing our lives. I know that this sounds a little dramatic. The information in this book is really eye opening. I have spent the past year dealing with a few health issues. My Doctor doesn't have answers other than to prescribe medication. I am kind of adverse to taking medications and always wondered how taking a medication for a symptom would help the problem. I think that this is why I am adverse to taking medications. It feels like a mask for the symptom, not a "cure" for the cause of the symptom. I have found that the traditional medical system is broken. I wait for weeks or months to see my specialist. When I am at my appointment the Doctor usually spends about 5 minutes with me while seeming to focus more on getting to the next person waiting than really listening to me or focusing on me and my needs. Then, in that 5 minutes I ask about the blood test or results from other tests that he ordered and I completed several months prior to only find out that he has not looked at the results. I ask, what is the point of doing the blood work or having the test if you are not going to look at the results? I find this over and over, not only with my current specialist, but with other Doctors as well. It seems that the traditional medical system is no longer about helping the patient obtain health. It's more about making money, selling drugs, and masking symptoms. I guess that I have been a bit naïve. The information in Dr. Blaich's book answered a lot of questions that I wasn't even aware that I had. Learning about how the different systems work together and how one thing can and does affect something that can seem so completely unrelated. And how traditional medicine solves with drugs and surgery when a simple diet change or adjustment can heal. So much unnecessary suffering, so much unnecessary drug use, so much unnecessary surgery. I think that every Doctor would benefit from the knowledge in this book. If Doctors would just be open to the possibility of healing a person rather than covering up symptoms think how it could positively change the lives of so many. Dr. Blaich has studied and researched and practiced the information contained in his book, "Your Inner Pharmacy", for decades. This information comes from experience, not conjecture. Read it, understand it and apply it in your life. I feel sure that you will reap the rewards.

I recently received a copy of >Your Inner Pharmacy< and read it in two sittings, which is unusual for me. I was intrigued by the statistics he offers--that nearly a third of the U.S. population suffers from chronic illness, most of which are "lifestyle" illnesses that we could easily cure or prevent with our own lifestyle changes. Also, that the #1 health threat in the U.S. is smoking. I loved the author's clear distinction between "medicine" and "healthcare:" "The field of medicine works to prevent and treat disease. It differs from true healthcare, which promotes health an optimal function of the body." Dr. Blaich's prescriptions for health include massage, chiropractic, acupuncture and other so called alternative practices. He does a great job of explaining--scientifically, but in easy to read layperson's terms--how these health systems work, why they work, and when to use them instead of standard medicine. This book is beautifully written. The greatest thing about it is that it lays out all the information we need to take charge of our own health. This is a book which will be spotlighted on my own health reference shelf for the rest of my life; it is already dogeared and underlined at places I want to remember. I can sincerely recommend it to anyone who wants to map out a healthcare plan for their own life. Many years ago, I co-authored The Well Body Book, with Dr. Mike Samuels. It was a national bestseller and certainly shared Dr. Blaich's approach to health. Your Inner Pharmacy, I must say, is a far better book than my own, giving a very grounded and practical prescription for taking responsibility for our health. I applaud this book enthusiastically and know it will serve thousands of people who want to live healthy lives.

An interesting and readable book written with great sincerity by a truly caring professional. As I said in the title, this is what healthcare should mean. The problem I found is that locating a professional with range of skills and attitude of Dr Blaich which comes across in this book is virtually impossible.

I haven't read all of this yet but what I have read seems logical, reading it just reinforces what one knows already but it does act as a good prompt.
