National Book Award Winner and New York Times Bestseller: Explore earth’s most precious, mysterious resource—the ocean—with the author of Silent Spring.

The Sea Around Us became a cultural phenomenon when first published in 1951 and cemented Carson’s status as the preeminent natural history writer of her time. Editorial Reviews

Review

“[Carson has] a rare gift for transmuting scientific fact into lucid, lyrical language.”—Time “Her book remains fresh, in part because of her ability to convey scientific insight in vivid poetic language—but, perhaps more important, because what she has to say is still so relevant today.” —Scientific American “As stimulating as a breeze from the oceans about which she writes; an invigorating and exciting book.” —Boston Herald

Rachel Carson (1907-1964) spent most of her professional life as a marine biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. By the late 1950s, she had written three lyrical, popular books about the sea, including the bestselling The Sea Around Us, and had become the most respected science writer in America. She completed Silent Spring against formidable personal odds, and with it shaped a powerful social movement that has altered the course of history.

Promised a signed copy, but lied.
This listing is titled "The Sea Around Us - Signed by Rachel L. Carson," explicitly stating that Rachel Carson herself had signed this copy of the book. Instead, there is a small marking in the book saying "Rooney 1952." I did not want a copy of this book signed by "Rooney."The book was in great condition given its age, and was shipped adequately to prevent damage from water or impact on its way to me. However, I will be reporting this seller to amazon for the deceitful listing.

• The Sea Around Us was first published in 1950 and revised in 1960. The revisions mostly take the form of footnotes, which in my edition are shown in the text. TSAU is one of the single handful of most famous popular science books ever. I probably never would have picked it up, thinking it hopelessly outdated, except for a wonderful PBS documentary on Ms. Carson. But having the added hook, knowing the context, joined with the motivation of that it must be famous for something, inspired me after all these decades to give it a go.
So first of all, what is it? From the bio I know that it is highly scientific, i.e., it is largely based on primary sources. Also, that it was many years in writing. What emerges is 15 chapters, loosely grouped into three sections, which are loosely grouped into the book. Some of the subjects of the chapters are – what does the bottom of the ocean look like and how could these structures, e.g., canyons in the continental shelf have formed? How did humans migrate over the ocean, especially in prehistoric times? Some of the subjects are rich and surprising: life on the ocean bottom depends on the long snowfall of detritus.
Now for evaluation. I learned much. Considering the beginning was perhaps the most outdated I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, the tides must affect the deep ocean. The tides were really much higher in the ancient earth? Of course, since the moon was much closer. So, the oceans daily must have swept over much greater parts of the continents. And with violence.
How dated is it? There were only the first computers. Only the first satellites. Only the first DNA sequencing. Continental drift was still speculative. Deep ocean vents were still undiscovered. Some of the fun is seeing how much has changed, but yet how much they got right.
Much of the praise is for the writing and the language. Certainly, every word is indeed in its place. And every paragraph. Often the best language though is from the quotes, especially from the mariners. Digressing, I now understand Moana better than before!
So yes, it is a great book and very much recommended for anybody who looks forward to their vacation on the ocean every year. Especially if they love nature. And science.

This review is for the seller and not necessarily the contents of the book. I buy a lot of used books and don't usually buy books listed as "acceptable", I took a chance on this one because it is hard to find and usually a lot more expensive. I am VERY pleased with condition of this book, it is beautiful, very little wear for such an old book. I have bought used books listed as Excellent, in the past, that come with the bindings falling off and pages falling out, which is disappointing. I am extremely pleased with this purchase (I don't normally leave reviews- that's how happy I am).

I thought I was going to be reading a book about the amazing "creatures" of our oceans and seas. Surprisingly I was taken on a scientific journey and many of the truths and theories relating to the lands and seas about us, their solar interactions, creation and much more. We've learned a lot more in the 60 years since the author's updated version, although much remains the same. It is still one of our least knowledgeable areas. Interesting read.

Came quickly, in perfect shape. Wonderful how much could be known in 1951 about the world and the sea. Tantalizing clues about plate tectonics were swirling around, waiting for the fearless researchers and synthesizers to reveal all. So far, this is an upbeat book. I have avoided 'Silent Spring', so far - don't want to be depressed by a jeremiad. Get enough of that on most nature shows - just show me the giraffes and chimps, don't remind me of how bad and thoughtless humans are. But this book just flows and bounces with energy and wonder.

I may finally get SS. Ms. Carson is such a beautiful writer.

I'll note first that I read recently "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson, on my sister's fortunate recommendation; I read this book as a teen and was not able to sufficiently appreciate it; like so many other wonderful books it has to be re-read later in life. It is stellar, and as someone who turned 50 this year, I just think it is of incalcuable importance, and important for everyone to read. I truly think that Rachel Carson launched, or at least really launched into overdrive, the environmental movement with this book.
So, also on my sister's recommendation, I read The Sea Around Us - by this book, I was just blown away with delight. Learning about our oceans is mind-boggling and I realize that they are mysterious as outer space, yet right here on our earth.
I have gleaned an understanding from my reading of Rachel Carson's books (and from another beloved author, Wallace Stegner) that trying to help and protect the environment, and the earth, is the most important and urgent thing for everyone to try to do. I am grateful to such wonderful writers.

This was a surprise read for me. I knew that this work was out of date when I ordered it, but I was willing to overlook mistakes of fact if Ms. Carson could give me insight. Good call. This book is a great book. If one has any feelings for the sea at all, she or he will enjoy this book immensely. Forget about continental shift or any other fact that one might find missing or incorrect when Ms. Carson wrote this book. We have Wikipedia nowadays for the finicky. Ms. Carson's love of the sea is timeless. Immediately upon finishing "The Sea Around Us", I had to call up Conrad's, "The Mirror of the Sea" (mentioned by Ms. Carson as one of the most moving books she had read). Two great books, especially if one reads them back to back. What a great experience!

The Sea Around Us

5.0 out of 5 stars Rachel Carson's famous book.

This book is a superb geography text book, well written and , although from the late 1950s, not dated.
It was written before the Plate Theory of continental movement, before satellite measurements of sea levels and coast lines and before deep ocean exploration, but it doesn't suffer from that. Nothing she talks about is wrong in today's knowledge. It is just explained deeper if it is read with a layman's understanding of those recent developments.
