The Hiding Place Kindle Edition
Corrie ten Boom was the first licensed female watchmaker in the Netherlands who became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's concentration camps, and one of the most remarkable ministers of hope in the twentieth century.
In World War II she and her family risked their lives to help Jews and underground workers escape from the Nazis. In 1944 their lives were forever altered when they were betrayed, arrested, and thrown into the infamous Nazi death camps. Only Corrie among her family survived.
This is her incredible true story--and ultimately the story of how faith, hope, and forgiveness triumphed over unthinkable evil. For 35 years millions have seen that there is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still. Now The Hiding Place, repackaged for a new generation of readers, continues to declare that God's love will overcome, heal, and restore.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2025"The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom is a deeply moving and powerful memoir about faith, survival, and resilience during World War II. The book tells the true story of how Corrie and her family helped hide Jewish people from the Nazis in their home in the Netherlands, ultimately leading to their own imprisonment in a concentration camp. Through it all, Corrie’s unwavering faith in God provides strength and hope, even in the darkest of circumstances.
What makes this book so compelling is not just the historical context, but also the personal transformation of Corrie as she experiences the cruelty of war and the power of forgiveness. Her story is one of immense courage and compassion, demonstrating the profound impact of kindness and belief in humanity. "The Hiding Place" is a timeless read that inspires readers to stand up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming evil, and to never lose hope.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2015This was such an encouraging story!
If you know only the barest details of Corrie ten Boom's life story you might mistake her for a superwoman. After all, this is a lady who lost her father and sister to the Nazis, and who had to endure depravation and cruelty of a German concentration camp and yet she still managed to forgive the very people who did her so much harm. That certainly doesn't sound like any ordinary person!
However, while Corrie was most certainly a special woman, her biography is all about God's greatness and not her own.
In the first third of the book she sets the scene, telling of her early life, and sharing the sage wisdom of her father. Once, when she was a little girl she overheard someone talk of "sex sin" so she went to her father and asked him, "Father what is sexsin?"
"He turned to look at me, as he always did when answering a question, but to my surprise he said nothing. At least he stood up, lifted his traveling case from the rack over our heads, and set it up on the floor. 'Will you carry it off the train, Corrie?' he said. I stood up and tugged at it. It was crammed with the watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning. 'It's too heavy,' I said. 'Yes,' he said. 'And it would be a pretty poor father who would ask his little girl to carry such a heavy load. It's the same way, Corrie, with knowledge. Some knowledge is too heavy for children. When you are older and stronger you can bear it. For now you must trust me to carry it for you.' And I was satisfied. More than satisfied– wonderfully at peace. There were answers to this and all my hard questions – for now I was content to lave them in my father's keeping."
Later she, still as a child, she has her first encounter with death – a small baby in an apartment on her same block has passed away - and she can't stop worrying about what she would do if her father and mother died. She can't eat, and can't stop crying. In response her father points his little girl to her Heavenly Father.
"Father sat down on the edge of the narrow bed. 'Corrie,' he began gently, 'when you and I go to Amsterdam – when do I give you your ticket?'
I sniffed a few times, considering this. 'Why, just before we get on the train.' 'Exactly. And our wise Father in heaven knows when we're going to need things, too. Don't run out ahead of Him, Corrie. When the time comes that some of us will have to die, you will looking into your heart and find the strength you need – just in time.'"
And that is just what Corrie finds, when years later this ordinary woman, who led such a quiet life for her first 48 years, finds herself as the leader of a Resistance cell, hiding Jews and members of the underground, stealing ration cards from the Nazis, and providing whatever help she could to whoever came asking. And that is what she found still in the midst of the Nazi concentration camp, surrounded by cruel guards and biting fleas. God gave her just what she needed, just when she needed it.
This is a wonderful story that will be encouraging to anyone contending with discouragement, sickness, death. Miss ten Boom wants us to know that God never stops being good, even when we ourselves are wavering as things around us go so very badly. We can trust Him. We can count on Him. He loves his children!
I'd recommend it to anyone 16 and up and suggest it as a very good offering for any reading group - it would foster some wonderful discussions.
There is also a "young reader's edition" which has been abridged to about half the length. But they accomplished this feat by taking out all the charm. The original reads just as you might expect an older Dutch lady to talk, but the abridged version has only a flat, generic narration to it - Corrie's unique voice is gone. So give it a skip, and go with the original, even for "young readers."
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2024Corrie and her family were put in German Nazi concentration camps for helping Jews hide and get away to safe countries. She was placed in one of the worst nazi camps, and was housed with her sister. She never saw her mother, father, brother or other family members ever again. Corrie was the only one in her family that survived and when you read this story, you will know that it was by the grace of God she did survive.
A truly remarkable story and very well written. 👏
At one time many years ago, Corrie Ten Boom had visited our church, Bellevue Baptist Church when it was downtown in Memphis, TN.
I highly recommend this book. It's a good read. Sad but good.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025An incredible story of Hope, Faith & Love… Corrie’s story, and that of her family, is one that is sad but inspiring. I can highly recommend this book, as Corrie shares how she overcomes Nazi oppression by teaching and showing others the true, deep love of Christ.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2022Corrie ten Boom, daughter of a Haarlem watchmaker, grows up in a devout Christian family. When the Nazis invade, they start to take in Jews fleeing persecution. Corrie and her sister find themselves in a concentration camp, where their faith is tested and they learn more about what it is to be a Christian in very difficult times.
The first part of the book recounts Corries childhood and early life in Haarlem. It is an idyllic portrait of a Christian family, with their daily bible-readings and peacefulness, but also their challenges and heartbreaks. This is to me the most enjoyable part of the book. Later in the prison camp, Corrie views her trials through the lens of faith, narrated with an engaging inner voice. She faces the age-old challenges every Christian struggles with: to hold onto resentment, or forgive? To view oneself as higher than you should. The only difference is, Corries tribulations take place to the daily backdrop of brutality and murder. Touching is the account of Betsie, her sister who leads the way in following Christs example of selflessness and forgiveness.
It’s a lovely book, although somewhat difficult to read. her calm interior monologue only partially conceals the deeply touching sadness and profundity of that time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2025I saw the movie of "The Hiding Place" when it came out in the mid-70s and never forgot the powerful story and message. After being invited to read it for a book club, I felt it was time to learn the whole story.
Now, and generation after WW2, this story could be easily lost. But the deeper story, of the faith that the Ten Boom family held so dearly, is one we should never forget. Our easy American lives and beliefs have never been challenged in such a way as they were in the Nazi occupation and the concentration camps, yet there are lessons here for us all.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2025Great family of faith and love. A must read. Nuggets of wisdom to keep stored up in your heart and share at the right time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente livro - uma verdadeira historia de esperança!
Sempre.

I loved the way it's written. It's a story of courage in the worst times. And how you can burn the candle of love in absolute darkness

5.0 out of 5 stars What an incredible story of bravery, love and forgiveness...
I've read this book many times and each time I feel inspired. This is a story of the Ten Booms love for others and the cost of that love. However, they had no regrets... During the nazi occupation of Holland this family hid and helped many Jews. Corrie records everything they did to help them... it's incredible! They were sent to prison for it and while some didn't survive, Corrie was released after being in two concentration/work camps. Her story starts before the war begins and how Semitic mentality slowly creeps into Harleem...the results of war and the after effects of the war. But above all, it is a story of faith. Tremendous faith and trust in the Almighty! When everything seemed hopeless ( and their situation was dire) they chose hope. It's so inspiring!
