That Boy: A Small Town, Friends-to-Lovers Romance (That Boy Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 12,205 ratings

AN AMAZON TOP 5 BESTSELLER
Fall in love with the boy next door in this small town contemporary romance by USA Today bestselling author Jillian Dodd.

You know, being friends with two cute boys does have its benefits.

There's Danny. Danny is a golden boy in every way. He has dreamy blue eyes and blonde hair that always looks perfect, even when it’s windblown or been stuck under a football helmet. He’s the boy every girl crushes on. The boy I get into trouble with, the boy I fight with, the hot quarterback no girl can resist. Being with Danny is like being on an adventure. He has a bright, contagious smile and abs to die for.

Equally crush worthy is Phillip. Adorable, sweet Phillip, who I have known since birth. Phillip has dark hair, a perfect smile, brown eyes, and the sexiest voice I have ever heard. He’s the boy I talk to every night before I go to sleep. The boy who rescues me, the boy who can read my mind, the boy who is always there for me, the boy who tries to keep me out of trouble, the boy who irritatingly keeps getting hotter, and whose strong arms always seem to find their way around me. And when he gives me that grin, I can never say no.

One boy will give me my very first kiss.
One boy will teach me to make out.
One boy will take me to prom.
And finally, one boy will ask me to marry him.
They will both be my best friends.
But only one of them will be the boy I fall in love with.
Only one of them is That Boy.

From the Author

Three days until my first real date.
I am so excited!
I am also a paranoid, nervous wreck.
I like this boy so much! His name is Ryan. Ryan Marshall.
Ryan is so good-looking, and he's a senior! He reminds Katie and me of Jake from the movie
Sixteen Candles. I know it's an old movie, and the clothes are weird, but it's still funny and romantic, and it is worth watching just to lust after Jake. Lisa, Katie, and I all rank Jake in the Top 25 on our lists of All-Time Movie Hotties.
So, how does this sound?
JJ Marshall.
Jadyn Marshall.
Jadyn James Reynolds-Marshall.
Mrs. Ryan Marshall.
Doesn't that just roll off your tongue?
Speaking of tongues, they are the main reason I'm a nervous wreck. Ryan is a senior, and, well, sadly, I'm not all that experienced with boys. I mean, I'm a freshman, and I have been to dances with boys my age and have even
gone out with boys, but I've never really kissed them. Not like I hope to kiss Ryan anyway.
Bobby Robinson did shove his tongue into my mouth one time when we were kissing under the bleachers at a football game, but it didn't feel so good. I'm pretty sure he didn't have it exactly right.
So, I talked to my friends Katie and Lisa about how to properly make out.
But ... well, here is just a bit of their unhelpful advice.
"Just let him take the lead and do whatever he does."
Um, couldn't that get me into a lot of trouble?
"Just sort of kiss his tongue but try not to drool."
"Don't open your mouth too wide."
And then, "Just open your mouth wide."
See?
Stupid, conflicting information.
And this from girls who
supposedly know how to do this!
I feel like I'm an undercover CIA agent trying to wrestle vital information out of a ruthless double agent when the fate of the free world depends upon it. All the while, the president is yelling at me in a panic, saying,
Somebody! Anybody! Just get me the truth!
You know, this is really the kind of stuff that would be helpful to learn in health class. Much more useful information than knowing how a fallopian tube works or what kinds of cancer I can fight by adding fiber to my diet.
I mean, this is a date of epic proportions.
He's a senior, for God's sake!
My high school reputation could be ruined or made in one single night.
I don't want to be known as a terrible kisser!
Or, worse, as totally inexperienced!
I've got to do something.
Get me somebody, anybody!
I need someone who has experience and, most importantly, who will help me.
I glance out my window and see Danny's bedroom light is on.
Cha-ching.
Danny has experience, and I'm too desperate to be embarrassed.
So, I call him. "Danny, are your parents home?"
"No, they went to that parents' meeting at school with yours."
Yay!
"Good. I'm coming over. And you're, like, totally alone? Phillip isn't there, is he?"
"No, I'm totally alone. What's up, Jay?"
"Um, I just really,
really need your help with something. Be right there."
I slam down the phone and run out of my house and over to his. I barge in the front door and take the stairs two at a time up to his bedroom. He's sitting on his bed with a varsity football playbook spread out in front of him. I can tell by the intense look on his face, he has been studying hard. Danny's goal is to be the best high school quarterback in the state and then play for Nebraska. Let's just say, he is well on his way to achieving his goals.
"Hey, Jay," he says, straightening up. "What's the top-secret meeting all about?"
Maybe this is a bad idea.
No. You've got to find this stuff out.
It's vital to our country's well-being!
Okay, that's a bit dramatic, but it is vital to my well-being.
I pace the length of his room a couple of times, wringing my hands together, trying to get up the nerve.
"Okay, here it is. I need your help, and, well, I'm kind of embarrassed to say it, but here goes. I have that date with Ryan on Saturday, and I'm afraid I won't know what to do. I mean, I've never done it before, and I'm not exactly sure how. I don't even know if he'll
want to do it with me, but I'm hoping that he will, and, well, I want to, you know, be prepared. So, I need you to help me, Danny. Will you show me what to do?"
Danny stares at me in disbelief.
"This is a joke, right?" He laughs, gets off the bed, and looks down the hall. "Where's Phillip hiding?"
"No, Danny, I'm serious. I mean, if you can't
show me, could you at least tell me if I know how to do it right?"
"Let me get this right, Jay. You want me to
show you how to have sex?" He has a huge goofball grin on his face. "Wow. Well, I suppose that could be arrange--"
"Wait! What? Sex? Danny, what are you talking about?"
"What are
you talking about, Jay? You're the one who said you've never done it and that you want me to show you."
"I never said that!" Well, wait a minute. Maybe I sorta did. "I mean, if I did say it, it's not what I meant."
Now, he's staring at me like I'm psycho.
I probably am.
"The truth is, Danny, I've never really made out." There, I said it. "And I
really, really need to know how to do it right. I can't seem to get reliable information from my friends, I can't ask my parents, and Ashley's at college, so you're my only hope."
He continues the stone-faced look at me. "I thought you made out with Bobby?"
"Yeah, I did, and it was awful. And I don't wanna be awful," I whine desperately.
Then, I change directions in my thinking, trying to figure out a way to get him to teach me. So, I say with a challenge, "Hmm, well, maybe you can't do it. That's okay. I'll just go ask Phillip for help."
"Heck no," he growls. "He has about as much experience in that department as you do. Fine. I'll help you." He puts his hand up to his chin, thinking. "Hmm. Come sit down."
I sit cross-legged on his bed, facing him.
"Here. Take this." He throws his pillow at me.
Ooh. Yum. It smells just like him.
But, uh, excuse me. I've already tried practicing on my pillow, and it was no help!
"No, that won't work." He quickly snatches the musky thing away from me. "Too big. I know. Hold your hand up to your face," he orders. "Kiss it."
I look at him like he's nuts, but he nods his head, so I hold my palm up in front of my face and push my lips into it.
"Turn sideways a bit, so I can see better," he bosses, so I turn. "Okay, but your puckering is way too tight. You're not kissing your grandma, Jay."
"No, worse," I gripe, "I'm kissing my hand."
He glares at me. I think I had better just do as he said.
"Just loosen your lips. Try again."
This time, I pucker my lips but then try to make them loose. I glance over at him, my eyebrows raised in hope.
"All right, now, slightly open your mouth."
I try to slightly open my mouth. "This feels ridiculous."
"Hmm, is this really that important to you?"
"Uh, ye-ah. He's a
senior! My entire reputation is at stake here."
"Well, okay then." He jumps off his bed, shuts and locks his door, and turns off the light. There's plenty of light coming through his window from the streetlight, so I can still see him. But I must appear alarmed because he says, "Look, I just don't want anyone walking in on this."
He looks at me like he's a soldier being sent off to war, and I should be proud of his bravery and selflessness.
Actually, I am.
"Plus, you need to relax. Maybe, in the dark, you won't feel so stupid." He plops back down on his bed next to me and continues, "Tilt your head a little to the left."
I tilt my head.
"Lick your lips, so they're not all dry."
I lick.
"Stop smiling and close your eyes."
I close them.
"Come on, Jay, I shouldn't have to tell you everything! Pucker those lips."

So this is the second time reading this book! And will continue until i finish the series! Even knowing what was going to happen, i still got every emotion Jillian wanted you to feel when writing this! It was an emotional Rollercoaster, sad, happy, angry, annoyed, excited... i still felt it all. I absolutely loved that boy the first time through and love it just as much if not more the second time. The characters, emotions, friendships, relationships, just everything was very well out together. Jillian you did a wonderful job at creating something beautiful. I love Jadyn, Danny & Phillip. "... I always lose the guy!"
"Yeah, well that's because they're always the wrong guy."
"And you think you're the right one?"
"Yeah. I do. I'm the one," he says, pointing to his chest.

I never thought I would finish reading a book and end up feeling like I made new friends. This story will completely immerse you into these characters' lives, make you wish you really knew them, grew up with them. It is a truly feel-good book if there ever was one and I am feeling the seam-bursting goodness all the way to my toes.

This is the delightfully light-hearted story of Jadyn "JJ" and her two best friends in the whole wide world, Danny and Phillip. Having been neighbours all their lives and having parents who are also best friends, they have always been inseparable. While JJ and Danny are very alike - both competitive, impulsive and fun-loving - Phillip is the level-headed quiet achiever one of the lot. They balance each other perfectly, loving one another unconditionally and always being there for each other. We watch boyfriends and girlfriends come and go, but their friendship staying true and only getting stronger as time passes by.

We follow JJ, Danny and Phillip through their teenage years, through heartbreaks, personal trials, moments of joy and moments of intense sadness, witnessing their transition into adulthood first-hand. We hear it all through JJ's voice, the voice of a young girl raised in a loving family and surrounded by people who love her selflessly. From a tomboy who needs to prove to others that she can play catch better than any boy, to a young woman embracing her body and her feelings, JJ enchants us, makes us invested in where life takes her, and we can't help but watch her life unfold with heated anticipation.

The relationships between the two boys and JJ are as different as night and day. Danny excites JJ, turns her to mush every time she sees him, easily making her entertain the idea of turning their friendship into something more. They are like two fire crackers when they are together - always the life of the party - their minds mischievously in sync and always ready to conquer the world.

"... when you're around Danny, it's really hard to think about anything but him. He's got this easy, seductive way about him. Like he's a warm, inviting swimming pool and you can't wait to jump him."

Her relationship with Phillip, on the other hand, is a much closer one but with clearer and much more guarded boundaries in JJ's head. She never sees him as anything more than her best friend, one she talks to on the phone every night before falling asleep, one she depends on when her life turns sour, one she cannot do without.

"Nothing is ever real until I tell it to Phillip."

His affection for her is pure and genuine, it lifts off the pages and envelopes us in its tenderness. Phillip complements JJ, he grounds her and makes her want to be a better person. While we watch JJ step into womanhood, make her mistakes and learn her lessons, we also watch her come to terms with her own feelings and what she hopes to find in life.

Two boys, two sides of JJ, only one boy that has her heart.

Do yourself a favour and read this book. It will be like sunshine after a cloudy day - it will fill you with cheerfulness and put a smile on your face.

"I've been here for you all along. I've listened to you cry about other guys, I rescue you, take care of you when you're sick, hug you when you're sad, tell you you're beautiful when you look terrible." He looks me straight in the eyes and is dead serious when he says, "Princess, I've always been the one."

Warning: If you are allergic to romantic comedies, then THAT BOY is not the book for you. But if you are immune to fun, sweet romances and hot boys that will have you gushing then please continue.

THAT BOY was my first ever Jillian Dodd book and have to say that I absolutely loved it and could not get enough. Before reading THAT BOY, I was high on angsty and intense reads. It seemed like every book I was reading was overly dramatic and gut wrenching. Reading THAT BOY was like walking out of a dark tunnel and entering into a fantastical world full of hearts, flowers, rainbows, unicorns, and kittens. It was a total 180 degree difference from what I was accustomed to but I do not regret one page, paragraph, sentence or word of this book.

I could go on and on about how much I loved this book but I'm going to break the book review norm and give you five reasons why you should read this book.

TOP 5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD READ THAT BOY

1.Loveable Heroine: If you've ever watched the movie, My Girl, Jadyn James "JJ" Reynolds will remind you of the movies main character, Vada Sultenfuss. Just like Vada, JJ is a fun, precocious, loving, and witty girl. She's a bit naive but not totally oblivious to consequential circumstances. She's your typical, spunky teenager without all the arrogance and rebelliousness. JJ is one of the most realistic YA heroines I have ever come upon and really appreciated her honesty and self-deprecating sense of humor.
2.Double the Pleasure…Double the Fun: *sigh* to have grown up with two hot boys who eventually become your BFF's for life. At one point I was seething with envy over JJ's friendship with All-American Boy Hottie, Danny Diamond and Prince Charming, Phillip Mackenzie. And I wasn't just jealous because she grows up next door to some hotties but envious of the strong relationships and bonds she forms with each is something we wish for in a friendship.

3.Love Triangle: Yes, THAT BOY has a love triangle but it's different and unique in its own way. THAT BOY is not that kind of story that leaves you with a clear winner or loser. At the end there is only one winner and that's JJ. I love that Jillian Dodd doesn't leave you having to pick one or the other because ultimately JJ ends up with both boys being a permanent part of her life. Each fulfills their respective roles and I couldn't have been happier about the way it ended. And for all you dirty minded folks, no, JJ is not in some threesome. LOL.

4.Growing Pains: You first meet JJ when she's an adorable eight year old tomboy and then watch her grow up and learn the facts of life from elementary school all the way till she graduates college. It was really enjoyable to see her go through various stages of her young life (middle school, high school, and college) as she learns valuable lessons about life, love, family, friendship, and growing up. I must warn you that there is a tragedy in the story that I found to be too devastating and left me in tears but for character development it's probably something that needed to happen in order for JJ to grow up.

5.Funville: THAT BOY was just an absolute joy to read. I immediately fell in love with Jillian Dodd's brand of writing. I loved the voice she gave to her characters and while the characters or story wasn't all that complicated, THAT BOY, is the kind of book that'll leave a lasting impression on you. Jillian Dodd will have you reminiscing about the best parts of your teenage years but with just the right amount of angst that doesn't leave you annoyed by the characters. Ms. Dodd definitely had me wishing that I could relive some of my most formidable teen years of my life.

Bottom line, THAT BOY is a definite must read for readers who adore a fun romance with delightful characters and a story that's easy and fun to read. You'll love reading about JJ and the two most important boys in her life and you'll walk away from this book feeling like you've made three new life long friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un libro che parla di crescita...
Reviewed in Italy on June 3, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!

That Boy is an amazing, hilarious, beautiful and relatable masterpiece.

“I haven't met anyone that made me want to stay with them, more than I wanted to go and rescue you.”

    Loved JJ.
    Loved Danny.
    Loved Phillip.
    Loved Loved Loved their relationship.

“Staying mad is easy. Forgiving someone takes guts.”

All three of them were so likeable and charming that I spent the whole book literally grinning and giggling and wishing I had had friends like those boys! Somehow Jillian took a tedious love triangle type situation and turned it into a beautiful and complicated story with so much depth and history that by mid-book I didn't care who JJ ended up with as long as it was one of them!

Because we are there throughout most of JJs life I found myself smiling when they would mention something from the past- as If I had been there myself to remember it.

This wasn't some trashy chic novel to pass the time- it was brilliant and completely unexpected.

That Boy is written in the form of Jaydn's diary and I love that! I'll be testing the style out myself with my next writing projects that for sure!
That Boy has definitely assured a place in my favourites list.

5.0 out of 5 stars honestly the best story of this genre I have ever read

WhT a fresh and unique story.
I mean the concept has been around for so long, but this…this was gorgeous.

The most beautiful mix of friendship, loss, togetherness, love, loyalty and respect.

It was just so beautifully mixed into this amazing piece of writing that bought to life these characters.
And the feast that the ‘fun times’ were not made into graphic scenes just made it even better!

I have totally fallen in love with Jillian and her writing style.
