The Elements of F*cking Style: A Helpful Parody Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 100 ratings

The truth about English is that it can get pretty boring. Dangling modifiers, gerunds, punctuation marks--it's enough to make you want to drop out of high school. Swearing and sex on the other hand, well, these time-honored pastimes warm the cockles of our hearts. Now, The Elements of F*cking Style drags English grammar out of the ivory tower and into the gutter, injecting a dull subject with a much-needed dose of color.

This book addresses everything from common questions ("What the hell is a pronoun?") to philosophical conundrums ("Does not using paragraphs or periods make my thesis read like it was written by a mental patient?"). Other valuable sections include:

•All I've got in this world are my sentences and my balls, and I don't break 'em for nobody

•A colon is more than an organ that gets cancer

•Words your bound to f*ck up

One glance at your friend's blog should tell you everything you need to know about the sorry state of the English language. This book gives you the tools you need to stop looking like an idiot on message boards and in interoffice memos. Grammar has never before been so much f*cking fun.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“To be sure, this is not a book for readers who might have an aversion to foul language or references to drugs and sex. Its 96 pages are replete with hilarious references, but don’t let that discourage you―Chris Baker and Jacob Hansen have ensured that naughty words serve the noble purpose of promoting good grammar.” ―The Weekly Standard

I'd bet the house that this is the funniest and easiest book on grammar in print. It is VERY raunchy; most of the examples refer to either graphic sex or drug use. But, it is an awesome read for someone that writes for a living and wants to spruce up their style and grammar while also experiencing some degree of enjoyment.

Think "Jackass" meets grammar and you'll get the picture. I simply can't find anything wrong with it.

This is the grammar book that the makers of 'Cards Against Humanity' would write. I ticked off a star because it's just not for everyone and I don't think I've really learned anything new from it. It's just entertaining to flip through once in awhile. Might be good for teenagers to learn grammar, if you're the kind of parent who wouldn't mind exposing your child to this kind of language. They probably hear worse at school anyway....

This book is fun for anyone interested in English grammar. It should become part of school curriculum around grade three to four, the time children are taught grammar, as it would make it much more interesting for them to learn correct grammar usage. However, it should be "must reading" for sports commentators as this group is guilty of making terrible on-air grammar mistakes, fumbling and stumbling over themselves in an effort to sound impressive but the result is often the opposite!

I suppose grammar buffs have their own logic and even their own sense of humor. After a colleague showed me this book, I quickly purchased my own copy. I even shared it with my advanced college students--they've actually heard all the "bad" language in here before. But we all agreed: grammar examples that make us laugh are easier to remember and hence excellent learning tools. While part of the audience for this book is the teacher who will appreciate it as a guilty pleasure, it should be purchased by anyone who wants to improve his or her own grammar. The examples are useful and colorful. They are vivid enough that even the reader who is the most resistant to grammar won't be able to ignore at least a few of the rules the book presents. Well done, Chris Baker!

There's a difference between crass humor and pointless vulgarity. I'm far, far from being a prude, yet I consider this book quite distasteful.

It also reads quite misogynist. The first three pages of the book include examples of declaring their sister to be a "slut," Chris' girlfriend "letting him f---- her in the ass," and declaring a woman to have "fake tits, nails, and hair." Is the sexism tongue-in-cheek? Well, it's more uncomfortable than funny; it doesn't seem like satire.

There are other, much more entertaining takes on grammar and punctuation than this. Only recommended for those who can't turn a page unless it contains a reference to genitalia.

Obviously meant for adults only, this is a hilarious and thorough parody of Strunk & White and similar stylebooks. All of the example sentences, as well as the grammatical explanations, are peppered with blue language and situations. One point off for very occasional lapses in correct grammatical explanation.

As long as you don't mind a splash of dirty humour, this book is great. It's extremely informative and helped me understand why I dislike some of my past writing. It's also rather funny. Not for the crude quotes, but for the no-bullshit, straight to the point attitude that it takes.

Possibly not quite as useful as the original (it can be a bit harder to read) but it does add entertainment value to an inherently boring topic.
