Grade 5-8-In this fourth installment of a series about a society that allows only two children per family, Luke Garner is finally adjusting to his new life at Hendricks School as Lee Grant. While the Grants belong to the highest class of society called the Barons, Luke avoids snobbish affectations and befriends his classmates, who are also illegal thirds. When the real Lee Grant's younger brother arrives at the school, along with his fierce body guard, Luke worries that Smits will expose him to the government. However, Smits has come to enlist Luke's help in discovering how his older brother really died, suspecting that he was murdered. The intrigue and danger grow more acute when both boys are called "home" and Luke discovers that the Grants have plans for him that could turn out to be fatal. As in the previous books, characters who seem honest turn out to be dangerous while others who seem suspicious end up as allies. The climax hints at a further installment. Fans of the series are the most likely audience for this story of Luke's continuing struggle to survive.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. This exciting fourth installment in the series that began with Among the Hidden (1998) focuses on "shadow child" Luke Garner, a third child in a futuristic society that allows families only two children. Luke, who has gone underground to escape the Population Police, reemerges after 12 years in hiding to assume the identity of Lee Grant, a member of the society's most privileged class, and is sent off to boarding school. The impersonation goes smoothly until Smits, Grant's younger brother, enters the picture. Luckily, Luke, who lives in constant fear that grieving Smits will turn him over to the Population Police, eventually manages to elude the authorities, which leaves open the possibility for more adventures. There is enough background information in the opening chapter to fill in readers new to the series, and series fans of the books won't be disappointed; there's plenty of suspense, and there are lots of thrilling twists and turns. I grew up on a farm outside Washington Court House, Ohio. As a kid, I liked to read a lot, and was also involved in 4-H, various bands and choirs (I played flute and piano), church youth group, the school newspaper, and a quiz-bowl type team. I was pretty disastrous as an athlete, although I did run track one year in high school. After graduating from Miami University (of Ohio), I worked as a newspaper copy editor in Fort Wayne, Indiana; a newspaper reporter in Indianapolis; and a part-time community college instructor and freelance writer in Danville, Illinois, before my first book was published. I've moved around a lot as an adult, having also lived in Luxembourg (during a college semester abroad) and in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. Several years ago, I moved back to Ohio with my husband and kids; we now live in Columbus, Ohio. My husband trains investigative journalists, and my kids are in high school, so there's always a lot going on around our house.

I am sure to say that so far this is the best in the series. When you pick it up you will not be able to put it down. But before you try to purchase this book you should read the rest of the series first. This is book 4 you should read 1, 2 and 3 first. You don't have to but you would enjoy the story more if you did. This book is full of decisions that Luke has to make. Most decisions are life and death. Another great thing about this book is the way the author includes all the characters from the other books in here. So you get a taste of all the characters. This book also has a fabulous ending to it. It ends so happy and it really gets you exited to pick up the next bok in the series. Hope you enjoy your copy and can give it a five star rating just as I did!! :)

I found this series on a list for recommended summer reads, I've never heard of Haddix or read any of her books. but I am IN LOVE with this series, and this book might be my favorite so far because of how it played out with Smits, Lukes family and his friends. I would recommend this book to grades 6 and up, I think that the amount of food and people in the world will become a larger problem than it already is in the not-super-faraway-future so being mindful and grateful for what we have is really imortant. Overall I'd give this book a hundred stars if I could, this series is proving an awesome adventure and I love how it can just whisk me way from reality especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the series. even though I'll be sad when it ends. :)

I would definitely recommend this series for anyone ten and up. My almost eleven year old daughter calls me overprotective and that may be true :), but I read the books before her. The first book "Among the Hidden" has one spot where it talks about a bra. Also, the second book "Among the Impostors" talks about boys looking at ( I believe it was) pictures of naked girls. This was bad enough I considered not letting her read the rest of the series; however, those are the only things I found inappropriate for her age. She is not a a big reader but cannot put these books down.

I have been reading the Shadow Children Books and not one has been boring or disapointing, including this one "Among the Barons"! Every page turned keeps building with suspense and there is never a easy place to just lay the book down. I recommend this book not just because they are fast reads and exciting, but because they also have good values of telling the truth and doing things because it's right. Enjoy!

I buy books for my classroom. This is a good condition hardback book that holds up to the abuse of being toted around in a backpack. Series books are a bonus as it creates interest to keep reading beyond the first book. The more kids read the more they acquire new vocabulary.

This is a great series for upper elementary and middle school kids--both boys and girls. My son read the whole series and loved it so much he is now reading other stories by this author. I too read the series and as an adult thought it was very well written. The suspense keeps you from putting it down which is great for reluctant readers!
