Golf in the Kingdom Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 739 ratings

A spiritual journey, a lush travelogue, a parable of sports and philosophy—John Updike called this unique novel “a golf classic if any exists in our day.”

When an American traveler on his way to India stops to play a round on one of the most beautiful and legendary golf courses in Scotland, he doesn’t know that his game—and his life—are about to change forever. He is introduced to Shivas Irons, a mysterious golf pro whose sublime insights stick with him long after the eighteenth hole. From the first swing of the Scotsman’s club, he realizes he is in for a most extraordinary day.

By turns comic, existential, and semiautobiographical, Michael Murphy’s tale traces the arc of twenty-four hours, from a round of golf on the Links of Burningbush to a night fueled by whiskey, wisdom, and wandering—even a sighting of Seamus MacDuff, the holy man who haunts the hole they call Lucifer’s Rug.

“Murphy’s book is going to alter many visions,”
The New York Times Book Review declared. More than an unforgettable approach to one of the world’s most popular sports, Golf in the Kingdom is a meditation on the power of a game to transform the self.

Amazon.com Review

Esalen Institute founder Michael Murphy's divine meditation on the royal and ancient game defied categorization when it was first published in 1972, and it still does. Instantly hailed as a classic, it is part novel, part philosophy, part myth, part mysticism, part enchantment, part golf instructional, and is altogether unique. This confluence of sports and the supernatural looks at both life and golf from the inside out. The book's central character is a wily Scotsman named Shivas Irons, a golf professional by vocation, and a shaman by design, who Murphy, as participant in his own novel, meets on the links of Burningbush, in 1956 Fife. The story of their round of golf together culminates in a wild night of whiskey and wisdom where their golf quite literally takes on a metaphysical glow as Shivas explains how the swing reflects the soul. It alters not only Murphy's game, it also radically alters his mind and inner vision--and it's truly unforgettable. For a golfer, Golf in the Kingdom is as essential as a set of clubs.

From Library Journal

This book offers a view of golf in a more philosophical and even mystical light. This 25th-anniversary edition includes additional reflections by Murphy. Though golf is definitely a fanatic's game, half of this is written for laughs.

Author Murphy meets up with an ageless Elfin golfer late at night. He gets schooled in being "at one with the ball". Must read to elevate your psychic game play!

Golf is a deeply spiritual game, full of lessons. This book only scratches the surface. Friends kept recommending the book to me, but they don't play golf, so it may have been profound to them that it's not the sport they have prejudged it to be.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I was trying to figure out if it was a good book for non golfers, and that is harder to evaluate. But if you like golf, I think you'll like this book a lot. If you like golf and eastern philosophy, I think you'll love it. There is so much to relate to about the game and so many eye and mind opening lines of thought. I can see why forty five years after its publication it is still popular.

This book can be described as either 99% story and 1% traditional golf instruction or 1% story and 99% non-traditional golf instruction. Either way you'd be right. If you enjoyed Quantum Golf then you will also like this book, although Golf in the Kingdom definitely goes deeper down into the rabbit hole. I can see how reviewers either love or hate this book because it is not your typical golf book. It's definitely geared more toward the "Zen" golfer who seeks improvement through abstract concepts versus hard and fast mechanical technique. Overall I enjoyed this book and I feel it is one that you can go back and re read every once in a while.

Strange book, maybe a bit abstract for me. The writing style is dense and tends to ramble. There are some interesting ideas. The boundary between fact, fiction and philosophy was not clear to me

I loved the description of the reasons to play golf. This is a beautiful enlightened story that reveals philosophical under pinning about the game in a very humorous and academic way. I truly enjoyed finding out some of the reasons why I play the game that I was unaware of. We all should have the pleasure of meeting our very own Shivas Irons.

Using golf as a metaphor for understanding not just the world around us but the world inside each of us. Very good, a little more confusing than 'The legend of Bagger Vance' but on the same lines for golf as a spiritual journey to inner development. Worth reading several times to fully grasp all of the information.
