First of all, I must be clear, this book is NOT a healthy vegan cookbook by any means. What it is however, is a delicious vegan cookbook to satisfy any vegan (or hungry eater in your home)! As with many cookbooks, I had to buy this one just for the name alone, and it did not disappoint. Even my non-vegan family was amazingly satisfied with these meals and asked for more! Prepare to be filled up with such delights as,

    Tofuevos Rancheros
    Lentil and Bacon Pot O'Stew
    The Double Take
    Tempehitan Burgers
    Ultimate Patty Melt
    Barbeque Ribs
    Creamy All-In One Bowl
    Hearty Breakfast Bowl
    Irish Nachos

What's that you say? Looking for dessert or something to satisfy that sweet tooth? look no further, you will be happily delighted once again with desserts/vegan goodies like:

    Old-Fashioned Coconut Cake
    Vanilla Pudding Cupcakes
    Salty Sweet Oat Cookies
    Chocolate Pecan Muffins
    Apple Pie With Pecan Crust
Sugar Rush Cereal Bars (made with Dandies and Cap'n Crunch Cereal)

and our family favorite: Maple Bacon Doughnuts! OMG!!! Talk about vegan food heaven! I have a ton of vegan cookbooks and the title of this book indicates exactly what to expect and doesn't disappoint. Rest assured those of you who are still not sure whether to buy this or not; do your self a favor and buy it! You will not be disappointed. The authors do say on a variety of "less than healthy" recipes to serve with a green vegetable (my guess is because you won't feel as guilty when you eat the dish). Overall, this is a great book for that occasional vegan meal when you just want to eat some good ole comfort food!

A lot of great recipes! However, MOST of these recipes call for gluten and/or soy-based items: tofu, TVP, Tempeh, Seitan, and the like. Well, many people (me included) are avoiding gluten and soy due to allergies and sensitivities.

For Gluten Free: I'll use GF flour blends, gf breads, etc.

For some of the savory recipes that call for a firm fake meat (like tofu, etc) substitute chopped mushrooms, beans, quinoa (regular grain-like quinoa or quinoa-based prepackaged veggie burgers, or a solid quinoa-based or regular-corn-based polenta), and see how it works out.

For any recipes that call for sour cream, cream cheese, I will use either Wayfare gluten, soy and nut-free items, or use a cashew-based sauce, or use daiya vegan soy-free and gluten-free cheeses (cream cheese, shreds, slices or wedge) for them, instead.

For any recipes that call for yogurts, I will use coconut-milk-based yogurts (there are also almond and rice yogurts, or one could make their own).

So...with those amendments, I think I can still work with many of the yummy-looking meals in this book! :)

Just what I needed! I've only been vegan for a short while, still transitioning really, and so I'm looking for veganized recipes of foods I already love! This book has many of those in it, plus a whole lot more of yummy looking recipes. No, it's not health conscious, but I'm perfectly fine with that! One of my biggest problems and concerns with a vegan diet is still filling hungry after eating, or feeling hungry a short while afterward. I hate that feeling. These recipes, however, look to be very satisfying and comforting! And it has such a wide variety! Love it already!

I am sure there are a lot of people that would enjoy this cookbook. It would be great to use as a resource when the carnivores come knocking for dinner, but.... It is just too unhealthy for me. So many of the recipes are fried, use TVP, lots of faux cheeses, butter etc.. I don't mind some junk vegan food now and again but, this is not a nightly go to cookbook for dinner. I did try a couple of things (making some changes to how it was prepared so as to not use as much oil etc) and the flavor was decent. If you like junk food or need to cook for a carnivore then this book may work for you... as for me I enjoy the health aspect of being a vegan and felt that this cookbook would not benefit me.

Unlike the Happy Herbivore, hearty vegan, does not have any nutritional information that I needed and looking at the recipes, there is no control on the fat, sugar and carb content.

I bought this book (and 10 others) while I was in the process of taking my family vegan, and it is one of my favorite books. Although the recipes are not always healthy, they are absolutely delicious. It is perfect for someone who wants to go vegan but isn't sure how to pull it off. I've made the burritos countless times, and the smokey pub cheese on the double stack is incredible too. Even if you are someone who likes to eat healthy, this is great to have on hand for cheat days or special occasions were you want a delicious but down to earth meal.

Though I usually eat foods that most omnivores turn their noses up at when the thought of tofu disgusts them, I've found this book to be a real winner when cooking for my non-vegan friends. There is a lot of use of processed products in some of the recipes, which I don't really care for, so if you try to avoid those items, this book may not be for you. I've thoroughly enjoy the recipes I've tried, especially the entrees, and the beefy-cheesy mac has become a go-to favorite of mine. There are also lots of color pictures, which is always a positive.
