About the author
Lisa Marie Rice is eternally 30 years old and will never age. She is tall and willowy and beautiful. Men drop at her feet like ripe pears. She has won every major book prize in the world. She is a black belt with advanced degrees in archaeology, nuclear physics, and Tibetan literature. She is a concert pianist. Did I mention her Nobel Prize? Of course, Lisa Marie Rice is a virtual woman and exists only at the keyboard when writing romantic suspense. She disappears when the monitor winks off.

This was a great addition to the Protector's series and I think it's my favorite since I already want to re-read it. Harry and Sam are the heroes from the first two books in the Protector's trilogy and in Harry's book we learn that when he was young, his five year old sister was killed by his junkie mother's meth head boyfriend (or so he thinks) before he was put into child protective services.
Chloe Mason has had a tough life. She grew up in and out of hospitals, undergoing numerous surgeries and much of her childhood is a blur. When she was a teenager she was sent to a boarding school/private school run by nuns. Only after her parents death does she learn that she's adopted (this is revealed in the first couple chapters so it's not a spoiler). After hiring a private investigator she discovers that she has a brother (Harry). She searches him out but she's completely unsure of his reaction and in fact steels herself for his rejection. He welcomes her with open arms and that's how she meets Mike Keillor, one of Harry's partners in RBK Security.
Mike was one of Harry's foster brothers and unlike Harry and Sam who had bad childhood's, Mike knew what it was like to live in a normal, happy family. His family was killed and he got placed in the system. At the beginning of the story he was on a very self-destructive bender (sleeping with a crazy crackhead, drinking too much) but when he meets Chloe he has insta-lust (which is standard for LMR stories) and feels like maybe he has a chance to be with someone good and normal and have a chance at happiness (like he sees Harry and Sam have with their families). Lately he's been feeling like he's a fifth wheel with them and it hit him hard, hence the self destructive behavior.
At the beginning of the story Mike gets put in a really bad situation (one of his own doing in an inadvertent way) and Chloe sees him at his absolute worst when he's arrested for something he didn't do. He's ashamed and his brothers are annoyed with him but things get worked out thanks to Chloe's quick thinking (and very skilled PI friend). After Mike's screw up Harry pretty much bans him from ever touching his sister, which is what allows them to get to know each other (not that Harry knew that would happen, he just wanted Mike to stay away from Chloe)
What I really liked about this story is that Chloe and Mike didn't jump right into bed together and both of their characters were really fleshed out. Mike was flawed and a man-slut before meeting Chloe (though after he met her, there was no one else!) and if they'd fallen into bed right away it wouldn't have worked. Instead, their relationship takes time to develop and it was wonderful seeing Mike really work for Chloe. There were a few heartbreaking moments between them (Chloe was strong in her own right but also a little naïve where men were concerned) and throw in some Russian mafia goons and there was just enough suspense and intrigue to keep the pace strong the entire time.
Compared to the other two books in the Protector's series I feel like this one was more sensual between the main couple and that their relationship was a little deeper. It seemed more raw and real and I'll definitely be reading this one again. Mike was very sexy and very alpha without being overbearing or obnoxious. A perfect LMR hero!
Chloe is a great female character. She has both strength and weakness and compassion. She's not your typical heroine mooning over the alpha male. She has an internal strength that I admired and it turns out, that is just what Mike needed to rejoin the land of the living. Chrissie/Chlor has overcome a lot and I love characters that have to overcome a lot.
In at least some of the LMR books, as in this one, the heroines go hungry a lot in lieu of sex. That bothers me a little. Sex burns calories, you would have to eat something to have a non-stop 12 plus hour sex a thon. I don't think it's realistic to starve the heroine.
I would like to think that there are people out there like this group of men who do help women in need. The basic premise of the book appeals to me. I was also very relieved to find that Chrissie did not die so Harry can stop grieving her.
The bad guys are really bad in this book. However, there are people like that in real life. And good wins out in the end. I love the descriptions of the weapons, etc. I enjoy how the guys go to do battle against evil.
This was a great wrap up for this story and the ones that came before. I wouldn't mind seeing more of Consuelo and/or Barney.
This could be read as a stand alone book but to really get into the characters of Sam and Harry and Nicole and Ellen and even the background on Mike, read the other two in this series first.

If you are partial to special forces men and the take charge attitude then these books are for you.
"Into the Crossfire" is number 1, "Hotter than Wildfire" is number 2, and of cause "Nightfire" is the third.
I really enjoyed these books and if sometimes it was a bit hard to believe who cares, I buy books for the escape from everyday life for a few hours and these books did it for me.
I bought the other two books in the series based on my reaction to this one. Really liked it!
