The genius that these writers displayed was less their literary style than their ability to sneak in subtle but devastating critiques of the Soviet system and slip them past the censors. Some would later pay for their daring, but these little stories artfully demonstrate the ultimate failings of the system.

This is a large collection of terrific short stories from numerous Russian authors. I particularly enjoyed the story about the Kolhozhniks hiding their children from Council men who had come looking to record the number of children in the village. As if plague had killed their livestock, the villagers shrugged shoulders, twitched curtains or simply hid, creating a ghost village as the inspectors came by. Prior experience with grain confiscation had taught them much!
The destitute village only had one child to be found. Imagine their surprise when later they found the inspectors had been registering the children not for confiscation, but for the allocation of free clothes and shoes!
Brilliant, and the book gets better!
