THE LOVE LIFE OF HOWARD HANDSOME AND OTHER SHORT STORIES is the first of Al Zimbler's humor books of fictional short stories. The second book is BLOSSOM WINTERS IS DRIVING ON THE LOS ANGELES FREEWAYS AND OTHER SHORT STORIES. The third book is THE WILD ITALIAN WEDDING AND OTHER SHORT STORIES, POEMS, AND JOKES.

The stories in this first book begin with the love life of Howard Handsome, back on the dating scene after being married for many years.

Read the beginning of the story “First Date”:

I’m Howard Handsome. Yes, that is my real name. I am recently divorced and, after splitting the proceeds on the sale of our house, I purchased a large condo penthouse. It had to be furnished, and before my wife took charge of doing all that. But now it was up to me to do my own decorating and furnishing. So I went to a well-known furniture store where my wife and I had shopped before.

Yvette, the designer, knew me from previous visits and we spent about two hours discussing the needs of my new abode. She also knew of my recent divorce and told me that she would like to fix me up with Sandy, a woman whom she had known for a good many years, also divorced. Yvette thought that I would find this woman to be a suitable first date.

I wrote down her name and telephone number, and put it into my billfold. Local elections were coming up shortly and I was busy, so I didn’t even think of calling her.

After the elections, I again visited this store along with my mother, whom I had brought along to help me with some wall pictures. We were looking at prints of Picasso when Yvette saw us and asked me, in front of my mother, whether I had called Sandy. I said no.

Hearing this, my mother yelled at me saying, “She gave you a number to call and you didn’t do it? You better do it tonight or I will get after you. ”

My mother is like that…

About the Author

Albert Zimbler grew up on the west side of Chicago and served in WWII. He met his wife when she was a student nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital, and they were married when he returned to civilian life. After getting an accounting degree and becoming a CPA, Al moved with Ruth and their first child to Elgin, IL, where Al started his own accounting firm. After Ruth and Al's four children had grown, Al sold his accounting practice before moving to a suburb of Chicago, where he and Ruth now live. And although he still has accounting clients, he spends much of his time writing short comedy stories as well as taking or teaching writing and improv courses.     When I first brought this book home my wife grabbed it, just for the title, She hasn't let go since, chuckling and cackling over every other page.

    Loved it and quite an unexpected book with many short stories, most hilarious. Know the author for years but never thought of him as a writer, of novels yet, about life and love and sex!

    I just finished reading this book. It was funny, entertaining and light hearted. It's a good book to read when you need a good laugh. I loved it!
