8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder: Effective Strategies from Therapeutic Practice and Personal Experience (8 Keys to Mental Health) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 682 ratings

A unique and personal look into treatment of eating disorders, written by a therapist and her former patient, now a therapist herself.

This is no ordinary book on how to overcome an eating disorder. The authors bravely share their unique stories of suffering from and eventually overcoming their own severe eating disorders. Interweaving personal narrative with the perspective of their own therapist-client relationship, their insights bring an unparalleled depth of awareness into just what it takes to successfully beat this challenging and seemingly intractable clinical issue.

For anyone who has suffered, their family and friends, and other helping professionals, this book should be by your side. With great compassion and clinical expertise, Costin and Grabb walk readers through the ins and outs of the recovery process, describing what therapy entails, clarifying the common associated emotions such as fear, guilt, and shame, and, most of all, providing motivation to seek help if you have been discouraged, resistant, or afraid. The authors bring self-disclosure to a level not yet seen in an eating disorder book and offer hope to readers that full recovery is possible.

Review

Carolyn Costin was my eating disorder therapist, and I credit her with my recovery. 8 Keys gives the reader the same insight, inspiration, and tools that Carolyn gave to me. It's straightforward, well-written, and allows the reader to actively participate in her own recovery. I highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with an eating disorder.-- "Portia de Rossi"

This book is a godsend to me as a mother whose daughter is recovering from anorexia and bulimia. It gives me such hope to read Gwen's detailed account of her own struggles with a serious eating disorder (many which parallel my daughter's experiences) and how she ultimately fully recovered to become a successful wife, mother, therapist, and author.

Because both Gwen and Carolyn suffered with eating disorders and went on to recover and become ED therapists, they offer unique insights and perspective in telling their story. I found it so compelling that Carolyn, as Gwen's therapist, was able to eventually guide her out of her deeply carved ED abyss by peeling away the layers of Gwen's resistance to finally identify the motivator that would silence Gwen's unhealthy voice once and for all.

With the secrecy and shame that surrounds an eating disorder, as well as the necessary privacy of therapy sessions, it can be difficult for parents to understand what their daughter is going through, what goes on in therapy, what recovery entails, understanding intuitive eating, etc. I found it so helpful and eye opening to follow Gwen's thoughts from the onset of her eating disorder and into its depths, and all the way through to her full recovery, and appreciate that she reveals the specifics of her disordered behaviors and the therapy details that would normally remain secret and behind closed doors. Relaying her experiences in the manner she has gives me comfort and an understanding that the recovery process can be long but to not give up hope.

The authors' empathetic and approachable tone is comforting, especially to someone like me who didn't know who to turn to for help for my daughter. I appreciate that they offer their contact information for additional help and resources. Though it is primarily a self-help book, it is a must read for anyone who has a friend or child suffering from an eating disorder.

I am in recovery from a long standing eating disorder and have been lucky enough to be under the care of both Gwen Grabb and Carolyn Costin at various points in time. I've been a client at Carolyn' Costin's residential program and it has helped me profoundly. Through the program, I have learned to eat a healthy amount, cope with difficult feelings, express myself, and reach out for help and support. Most of the exercises and ideas I learned in treatment are contained in this book.

This book is an essential resource for anyone struggling with an eating disorder. It can help those seeking to gain more insight into their own patterns and behaviors and how to change them as well as those who are not ready to seek treatment or even admit they have a problem. I can also see this book being very useful for people who do not have an experienced treatment team (therapist, dietician, psychiatrist...), inadequate insurance or little emotional support. The book is structured in such a way that you could simply read it and get a lot from it, or, really work through it and develop the skills needed for recovery. There is something for people at every stage of an eating disorder. Through providing personal stories of recovery from both Carolyn and Gwen, this book is immensely relatable to anyone suffering with an eating disorder. And they share what has helped them and their clients get well from the unique perspective of having both recovered from eating disorders and helping others recover.

This book would also be a valuable resource for professionals who treat eating disorders. Gwen and Carolyn make transparent the often confounding world of eating disorders and provide practical tools and activities to help move the patient toward recovery, regardless of where they are.

By far, this is the most helpful book I have ever read on eating disorders and recovery (and I've read my fair share). I wish I and my treatment team had access to this book many years ago.

There are many different modalities for treatment and recovery from eating disorders. As a recovered therapist myself, I know that my personal experience can be invaluable in treating eating disorders. Carolyn and Gwen share their experience in a graceful way that allows others into their personal experience and how it has led to their healing of others. An important point is that, in order to recover, one must have contact with someone who has recovered from an eating disorder, whether it is a therapist, mentor or friend.

I had the honor of working at Monte Nido and learning these principals and some of these assignments in this book. This book is written so that someone struggling with an eating disorder can use it as a source of hope and also work through the assignments. The action phase of recovery is key and the writing assignments are thought provoking and can be life changing.

I have been using this book and the assignments with clients and in groups and it has proven to be extremely eye opening to clients and gives us a lot of material to work on in further groups and sessions. It forces them to look at the eating disorder, its meaning and purpose in a different way and challenges long-standing core beliefs.

This book instills hope and shatters the belief that one cannot be recovered. Carolyn and Gwenn share what recovered really means and sheds light on the path to get there.

Carolyn and Gwen ~ Thank you for your wisdom, hope, honesty and courage.

This book is incredibly helpful. It outlines exercises, writing assignments, and self-reflection tools. The authors have suffered from EDs and both share their accounts navigating recovery. The book shed new light on some of the behaviors I was engaging in and forced me to be really honest with myself. This book is amazing.
