About the author

Jane Hardy Miller was born and raised in California, where she eventually attended college and law school. Her mother, a home economics teacher, taught her to sew by hand and machine, beginning at age five. Jane made her first quilt in 1968, and for the next ten years, she made about one per year, inventing techniques as she went along. She practiced law briefly in Hawaii and California before moving to Miami in 1979, where she married, had two children, and finally took a beginning quilting class. She has been working and teaching in a local quilt shop since 1987.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016What a great book! Full of projects and ideas to create wonderful quilts, table runners, tree skirts. Cannot wait to get started! Easy to follow directions and great photos of finished projects. Diagrams along the way to show you how to make these creations. If you can sew a straight line and use your rulers, you can create some wonderful works of art to gift to friends and family, or even better, keep for yourself! Bought the book for one project in mind, and when I thumbed through the pages, idea were flowing and I was mentally running through my fabric stash! Yes, I think I will be "French Braid Obsession" addicted by the time I get the first project done! Cannot wait!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2022Great book, nice patterns and instructions. Great condition, price and shipping. Very happy with my purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2013I liked the new ways of using the French braid. There was a lot more devoted to explanations than I thought necessary, especially if you have the first book.
I certainly don't need instructions for three Christmas tree skirts, even if they are different sizes.
I do like, (and the reason I bought the book) the idea of using larger areas of one fabric.
I think the book will be useful to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2016I LOVE this quilting book!!! I bought this when I was just learning to quilt and I was really fascinated by the french braid design. This book gives you easy to follow steps on how to make several different styles of frenchbraids. It will even help you figure out how much fabric you need of each color to make the size you want!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2022Although this was a "used" book, it looked like new. Now marks or wrinkles. I recommend the seller, it arrived quicker than I anticipated. I am a very happy customer.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2014I love the patterns. As a new quilter I was a little disappointed when the instructions referred me back to the first French Braid book, which I had no idea I would need to make the quilt. the instructions are here and there in the book, so construction is interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2015The instructions seem readable & clear, books in good shape as advertised. I am starting on my first French braid hilt today - looking forward to learning a new skill.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2011This book is filled with many beautiful patterns. I have enjoyed and hated working on a project from this book.
The instructions have you flipping from front to back, using directions from other quilts, all in all pretty difficult to understand. The measuring, with these projects, is also an issue. There are no real, concrete, measurements. These are cut as you piece patterns, which is opposite of how I like to quilt. I like to cut then piece.
I would highly recommend you make a practice quilt before cutting into your good fabrics. Being an experienced quilter, I found the language of this pattern to be challenging but once past that, I found the end product very gratifying. I suggest you take notes as you work your practice quilt then use those for your show project.
Plan on reading the whole book before starting any pattern. This will help when you start your quilt.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a classic
This book is not recent but still a classic. It doesn’t date and projects in it are quite contemporary.
I needed it to make a Christmas tree skirt. The explanations are excellent.and easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Jane Hardy Miller
This is the second book in the series and just as good as the first. Although the quilts in this book are more complex than in the first you are given instructions how to make a basic braid and someone with limited sewing experience could make a stunning quilt. The most difficult part is choosing the fabric and my tip is - do this in natural light and follow the author's instuctions and lay a braid out before you start to sew (avoiding distressing 'unsewing'!) As long as you can cut fabric straight and sew a straight line this book will help you to impressive results - the quilts are a lot easier to make than they look.
One warning - they do become obsessive - i am now on my third and have fabric lined up for the 4th!
