Show Dog: The Charmed Life and Trying Times of a Near-Perfect Purebred Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 303 ratings

Show Dog is the story of a lovable Australian Shepherd, Jack, on his novice tour through the exciting world of professional dog showing.

Following Jack from his first competitions in local school gymnasiums all the way to the great granddaddy of them all, the Westminster Dog Show, veteran journalist Josh Dean shines a warm, steady light on the trials that Jack and his plucky, dedicated owners come to face, and uses their story to explore the larger histories of dog shows themselves—the fascinating and sometimes bizarre history of purebred dogs, and our complex, heartfelt relationships to the pets we grow to love.

“A wonderful, charming look at the sport of dogs and dog shows and an absolute must read for anyone looking to get involved.” —Pat Hastings, AKC Judge and author of Tricks of the Trade

“A hilarious chronicle of blow-dried poodles, diva trainers and egregious canine puns. Above all, though, this is an irresistible story about the wondrous bond between humans and animals.” —New York Times bestselling author Mark Adams

“Filled with heart and humor, bringing to life extravagant characters, pampered pooches, and over-the-top humans without falling prey to tired stereotypes. That’s because it’s not really about animal beauty pageants; it’s about the unyielding bond between people and dogs and what they’ll do to make each other happy.” —New York Times bestselling author Jim Gorant

“Fascinating and funny . . . as I was sucked into the story of Jack the show dog, I began to understand the subtleties of the sport, the amazing talents of these animals, and the affecting human-and canine-drama behind the show.” —New York Times bestselling author John Hodgman

From the Back Cover

Every weekend, tens of thousands of Americans pack up their SUVs and minivans with crates, dryers, treats, shampoos, and hairsprays and fan out for some of the two-thousand-plus dog shows held annually across the United States. More than two million pedigreed dogs, and exponentially more humans who care for them, will take part, and the world that has grown up to support them is massive and vibrant, and almost impossible to imagine unless you've seen it in person.

By spending a year alongside rising star Jack—a champion Australian shepherd—and his friends, Josh Dean yanks back the curtain on the dog show world. Along the way, Dean takes a close look at the eccentric and fascinating world of breeders and dog show fanciers, exploring the history and science of purebred dog breeding and the evolution of canine perfection via dog show culture. He provides not just a hilarious and often touching portrait of a colorful subculture only slightly exaggerated in the film Best in Show but also a revealing look at our love affair with the world's most doted-upon and tinkered-with animal species, examining the colossal array of dog types and the humans who love them.

Josh Dean is a New York based journalist whose work has appeared in Popular Science, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, GQ, Men's Journal, Rolling Stone, Inc., Fast Company, ESPN the Magazine, and many others, covering subjects as diverse as pee wee go-kart racing, snowboarding in Iran, the byzantine world of small production watchmakers, and a start-up nuclear fission company. He is a former deputy editor of Men's Journal and was one of the founding editors of PLAY, the New York Times Sports Magazine, where he had the great fortune to work with David Foster Wallace on the late writer's classic Roger Federer profile/essay. Josh is almost certainly the first person in history to play in both the WEPA Elephant Polo World Championships and the Quidditch World Cup. (Sadly, his teams won neither.) He is the author of THE TAKING OF K-129, the incredible true story of the largest and most bananas covert operation in US history, SHOW DOG: The Charmed Life and Trying Times of a Near-Perfect Purebred, an extremely real and yet still unbelievable trip inside the world of dog shows, and THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE STOPWATCH GANG, about Canada's infamous and prolific 1970s gang of bank robbers. He lives in Brooklyn (and sometimes in the Catskills) with his wife and two sons.

I ordered `Show Dog' after reading a review of it in the USA Today, and it was definitely a good call on my part. A self-proclaimed dog lover, I didn't have any previous knowledge of the show dog world, and was wondering if the book might be a bit dry. I couldn't have been farther from the truth, as this turned out to be a great read for anyone, not just dog lovers such as myself or those familiar with the show dog circuit. Josh Dean does a terrific job of explaining the culture of the show dog world to those unfamiliar with the subject in an informative and easy to understand way, while interspersing humor throughout the entire tale. I read the majority of the book on a cross country plane ride, and caught myself laughing out loud numerous times. I look forward to Josh's next book, and will give this book the highest compliment I can think of - this is a book even cat lovers will enjoy!

I read the reviews before purchasing this book and although some of the reviews were not so great, I decided to give it a try. As it turns out, I made a good choice in buying and reading this book. I wanted to know more about the dog show world since I recently got an Australian shepherd of my own that may be show quality. I enjoyed the book because it provided an outsider's perspective to the dog shows and introduced many new concepts and facts that I was not aware of. I also was entertained quite a bit by the author's comical observations at time. This book is one that I would recommend to anyone wanting an entertaining introduction to the world of dog shows. By the end of the book, if you are like me, you will really be rooting for Jack to win. I did not give it a full five stars because it took me longer than normal to finish this book because it does get a little slow at times. Overall though, a great read. I would actually enjoy reading a sequel to this story!

I'm the editor of Cat Talk, a publication of the Cat Fancier's Association. When I saw this book as an ad on Facebook, I clicked on it, saw the summary, and ordered it right away thinking it would be great to write a book review for Cat Talk. The book is outstanding! Even though cats are so different from dogs on many levels, and our shows are seriously different (cats being significantly less expensive to show), Josh articulates the motivations behind fanciers in a way that I found myself identifying with Jack's owners, handlers and breeders. We are all basically the same, we have the same goals, the same joy, the same disappointments, and the same reason for participating in these fancies. And finally, there is a book that explains us.

Josh's writing style is perfect for the story of Jack and the crew of humans involved in his show career. I enjoyed the background information on the dog fancy which Josh presented in a way that leaves you wanting even more detail. Josh sort of teases you along by weaving the dog fancy into the story of Jack. It's very well done and keeps you turning the pages, with never a dry or dull spell.

Not only does this cat person find herself wishing she could have an Australian Shepherd, but I made a list of dog shows in my area. Now that's a successful book about dogs!

Great read. I couldn't put it down. I've owned dogs all my life but only recently learned about dog sports and competition from my breeder. I currently own two Shelties. One is a seasoned performance dog and the other, just a year old, is currently in training for performance and conformation. I think Dean went the extra mile to explain the ins and outs and ups and downs of competition in the dog world. We are an obsessed bunch of people addicted to the emotional roller coaster of weekends in the ring.

For me personally, these weekends keep my life balanced and fun. All week I anxiously look forward to meeting up with my friends and fellow competitors for socializing, celebrating and sometimes commiserating. It's always done with good sportsmanship!

I can't imagine how one begins to investigate this hobby without being a participant. My hat's off to Dean for all he endured for over a year in order to write a very true, extensively detailed, always interesting and very accurate account of show dogs, judges, breeders, handlers, exhibitors and the rest of the dog show participants. I hope Dean acquires a show/performance dog in the near future.

I am quoted in this book so had to buy it. Written from an outsiders point of view so there are many inaccuracies. Breeding healthy and winning dogs is much more complicated and involved. When dealing with millions of genes, breeding dogs is much less predictable than this author understands.

A great book that details the world of showing dogs. Although the book concentrates on showing dogs on a national level, the book is interesting and informative for those who just like to get a Championship on their dog. You will find yourself cheering for Jack and saddened when he doesn't win. A book that is worth reading and fun, too!

The first third of the book has a lot, a lot, of information about dog shows and their participants. By the beginning of the second third of the book I felt the author had found his stride. The main characters became more likable and relatable. There were moments of giggling, chuckling and outright bouts of laughter throughout the second two thirds of the book. As someone who has watched some of the dog shows mentioned in the book it was extremely informative to the point that I went and pulled up and watched the 2018 AKC National Championship Dog Show. So if you love dogs and tend to watch those dog show, or not, I recommend this book. Then you'll lean over, like did, and hug and kiss your own furry friend (if you have one) and realize how lucky you are they are in our lives.
