OK, I did buy this book for it's cover. The English Springer Spaniel. As an artist I knew most of the techniques in the book, but we can always learn something new, right?

I have been out of the artistic mode for a while and this book was like sitting in my college courses again. The attention to detail, showing techniques, tools and materials to use were exceptional. A great refresher course.

Granted it is not a full course meal -- it would have to be 1000 pages long but it is a great book for anyone, middle or advanced to improve their technique.

And the cover is superb! It sold me

Those is a good book for pointers on drawing pets DOR beginners. That said you should already have a basic book on drawing to understand depth, shading and basics.

This was a very good instructional book but I wish I would have noticed it was a Kindle purchase. My fault for not seeing what was right in front of me. The illustrations are beautiful & it's easy to follow the directions. My problem is that when I'm drawing or painting I like to have the actual book propped up in front of me. With the Kindle format that's not easy to do. It's so much smaller & not easy to see the detail of the drawings & instructions. I still recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners !!

Nolon Stacey is the great artist and drawings in the book are very much realistic. However, the explaination of rendering like like fur should have been little more detailed. There's not much explaination is given and hence I'm little disappointed. Also, when I read through the books I feel many of the steps have been skipped in some of the projects (eg. spaniel puppy). I like this books only for its best drawings but didn't find it much helpful. I was expecting a detailed explanation. However if you're not a beginner and have been drawing animals already, this book is very helpful for you to learn the new techniques.

I wish the book could have come with online video tutorials like other artists do.
