And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend: Furthur Reflections of a Grown Caddie Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 252 ratings

ANOTHER ROUND OF INSPIRATION AND INSTRUCTION

When Harvey Penick signed copies of his now classic first book,
Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, Bud Shrake, his coauthor, noticed that he often inscribed them with the line "To my fried and pupil." When Shrake asked him why, Penick replied "Well, if you read my book, you're my pupil, and if you play golf, you're my friend."

Taking up where the
Little Red Book left off, this is the second dose of Penick's singular brand of wit and wisdom, full of the simple and easy-to-understand lessons on golf that Penick is known and admired for. Like its predecessor, And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend is rich with Penick's great love of the game, a love that he delighted in sharing with golfers of all ages and levels of ability.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Penick, who became a club pro in the early '20s and achieved fame as the coach of the University of Texas golf team, is joined again by Shrake for more of what put their The Little Red Book on the bestseller lists: tips for links lovers whether pro or duffer. The authors' advice is to keep it simple, to rely on common sense and to practice enough so that play even in important games is almost instinctive. There is advice on head and body placement, club choice, even on preserving your equanimity, for Pro (as Penick is called) is a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. There are also entertaining anecdotes, like the one about a Chicago golf pro who lowered a member's handicap only to be told by the irate player, "Give me my three strokes back. I've had people killed for less than what you did." First serial to Golf Digest.

From Library Journal

Penick garnered much attention over the course of his 33 years as golf coach at the University of Texas, and with the best-selling success of his first book, Harvey Penick's Little Red Book (S. & S., 1992), this is a welcome addition. Penick tells his story in clean, straightforward prose. The narrative is seasoned with dozens of well-told vignettes about colorful personalities and golf tournaments. There are glimmers of insight here about his former pupils Tom Kite and Mark Brooks, both successful golfers on the professional circuit. The general reader will appreciate the witty biographical sketches that pepper the book. For all popular sports collections.

If you love the game of golf you will love this book. There are short bits of sharing the techniques that will help you long term in your game. As I was reading and went out to play, I found myself implementing what Harvey was teaching. It worked!!!

I had read Harvey Penick's Red Book and so wanted to get this one. This one has some endearing golf stories and some tips as well, but the first one is a priceless reference and full of things to encourage golfers at any level. Make sure you get it first. Then if you want to add this one, it's like icing on the cake.

It’s close to bible for the golfers but the book is not properly cut on the sides or bound. That’s sad..

5.0 out of 5 stars More Magic from the Pennick pen
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 18, 2009
Another slice of old world charm to complement the 'Little Red Book'. Mr Pennick dispenses more tiny gems of golf advice coupled with reminiscences from a lifetime of golf instruction. If you're looking for spine angles, hand positions, and endless paralysis by analysis then this book is definitely not for you. If you want something that you can dip in and out of where you can savour the genuine warmth of a man who loved and lived for the game then pour yourself a glass of your favourite tipple, sink into your arm chair and indulge yourself.
