Fatal Secrets (Point Horror Book 24) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 62 ratings

After her sister drowns, Ryan McCauley is haunted by the dead girl’s past

Two sisters walk through a snowy wood, collecting pinecones for Christmas decorations. Something has frightened Marisa, and she’s about to explain it to Ryan, her younger sister, when she steps onto a patch of thin ice. Marisa plummets into the frigid water below, and though Ryan tries to save her, there’s nothing she can do. Even though the accident wasn’t her fault, Ryan is consumed by guilt. But guilt is not what she should be afraid of. Three weeks after Marisa’s death, Ryan sees her everywhere. At night she feels something following her, but when she turns around there’s nothing there. A creepy college friend of Marisa’s shows up at Ryan’s house, and her mother asks him to stay through Christmas. To free herself of guilt, Ryan must unlock Marisa’s terrible secret—before death takes her too. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Richie Tankersley Cusick including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

About the Author

For three decades, Richie Tankersley Cusick (b. 1952) has been one of the most prominent authors of horror fiction for young adults. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana—home to some of the country’s most ancient ghosts—Cusick grew up in a small bayou town called Barataria. Inspired by the eerie Louisiana swampland, she began writing at a young age. After college, Cusick took a job at Hallmark and moved to a haunted house in Kansas City, where she began work on her first novel, Evil on the Bayou, whose success allowed her to leave her job and begin writing fulltime. Since then, Cusick has written more than two dozen novels. She and her three dogs live in North Carolina, where Cusick writes on an antique roll-top desk that was once owned by a funeral director. The desk is, of course, haunted.

Stayed up too late reading just so I could finish the book! Haven’t read it in over 20 years. Best book I’ve ever read? No. Kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat? Yes!

Really fun read and made me feel like a kid again.

One of my favorite books from my childhood - not quite as gripping as I remembered but still good. :)

Oh hot damn I love how Richie Tankersley Cusick writes the woman knows how to work a pen. I can honestly say I did jot see this ending coming. Jeez that was a great read. Loved every word. Ryan is probably one of my characters so far. I liked that she stuck to hers guns and didn't like Charles at first and was still suspicious of him as the story went on. Pheobe did start to irritate me after a while how can one person be so self absorbed. Not for me. Amazing story I love her books. Simply amazing. =]

This book had me from the first chapter. Ryan was a likable, believable character. The story flowed smoothly, never a dull moment. The is the first book I've read by this author. I certainly will be reading more of her books. I highly recommend Fatal Secrets.

Excellent page turner with so many twists. One of my favorites by RTC. Great plot and characters. It's so detailed and well written you feel as if your part of the story.

Loved the book, read it in 2 days!
The ending suprised me, did not see it coming at all.
So far I love all her books I've read

I loved Richie's books so much as a teenager that I would often get in trouble for going to the school library too often. There is a great balance of normal teen issues, suspense and even some romance. The dynamic between Ryan and Jinx is adorable while some of us can relate to the tension between Ryan and her mother. Great read.

I loved the intricate plot and Ryan's personality. The ending was a total surprise. The novel kept me guessing until the end, and the truth really shocked me because I did not see it coming!

It's clearly from a library as it has a stamp inside and a plastic cover. It was in great conditions. I loved the story when I was a teenager and wanted to read it again, it has a surprising end.

While Fatal Secrets had a lot in common with Teacher's Pet (which I did not enjoy), I did feel that this novel was a lot stronger on the whole. Rather shockingly for a Point Horror, it opened on a teenager's apparent death and explored the grief felt by her younger sister. A lot of the story from there balanced on a knife edge. Something is clearly fishy, and it's unclear if Ryan is losing her mind or if her sister's accident was actually murder.

The plot is fast-paced and kept me turning the page as I did genuinely want to find out what was going on. While I did feel that more focus could have been made on the investigation (Ryan basically forgets about her sister's undeveloped photographs until the climax), the story was well-written and atmospheric, doing a great job of presenting the fragile mental states of both Ryan and her mother.

While the ending twist was a bit mundane, I will admit that I was surprised by how deep the conspiracy went this time. While I had figured out parts of it, I was impressed by how many little insignificant details from earlier in the tale wound up being incredibly relevant to Melissa's death. The novel ended well, nicely wrapping up the loose ends in a surprisingly optimistic note.

My biggest problem with this novel was the characters. As with Teacher's Pet, Ryan is ultimately a bit of a Mary Sue. She's the quiet girl who everyone seems to love, managing to attract two admirers over the course of the story, one of whom only spoke to her twice. The willingness by which Ryan's mother invited Charles into their home also felt week. What kind of person would let a complete stranger live with them over the holidays, just because he claimed to know her deceased daughter?

All in all, I actually did rather enjoy this one. I would certainly recommend it.
