Deliverance: Mortal Path Book Three (Mortal Path Series 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

Kill . . . or be damned.

A demon's assassin for centuries, Maliha Crayne has gone rogue, determined to save a life for every one she's destroyed in order to free herself from an eternity of enslavement, damnation, and excruciating torment. But as the powers that sustained her in the past fade, she is wary of trusting those closest to her—especially her lover, Jake. And her closest friends are beginning to disappear, one by one. Amid her anger, suspicion, and sorrow, her life is spiraling out of control.

Worse still, a beautiful Renaissance murderess is recruiting Maliha as her new assassin. Maliha is turning into a lethal puppet with an evil Immortal pulling the strings, forced to kill innocents or see her missing friends die horribly. Suddenly trapped in a moral no-man's-land, Maliha is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't . . . and time is rapidly running out.

"THE MORTAL PATH is a novel to be savored for both its edge of suspense and the pure joy of its storytelling. Part immortal, all human, Maliha is a heroine who will leave readers breathless and craving more. Not to be missed!" (James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of Map of Bones and Black Order )

"DELIVERANCE is a gut-kick of a read, with non-stop action and as inventive a world as I've ever seen. Maliha Crayne, not a character to be trifled with, could give other Urban Fantasy heroines a pointed lesson in real ass-kicking." (Vicki Pettersson, author of the bestselling Signs of the Zodiac series on DELIVERANCE )

"A breakneck ride through worlds visible and invisible - who knew the ancient Sumerians were this thrilling?" (Joseph Finder,
NYT bestselling author of BURIED SECRETS )

"Chilling, thrilling, and a page turner!" (Heather Graham, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Killing Edge )

"DELIVERANCE by Dakota Banks delivers everything I love in suspense fiction: great characters who jump from the page; a smart, layered plot, and pacing that screams. This is the kind of book that makes you look forward to a rainy day." (John Gilstrap, author of NATHAN'S RUN and DAMAGE CONTROL )

"Readers who like their paranormal romantic suspense novels to feature nonstop action, twisting plots, and deadly heroines will devour Banks' clever and compelling Mortal Path series. Assassins, demons and danger, oh my!" (Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of LOVE YOU MORE )

"Fans of supernatural and dark fantasy will be intrigued by Maliha Crayne's quest to save her soul." (Publishers Weekly )

From the Author

The inspiration for the Mortal Path series came from the occupation of Baghdad by American troops in 2003. There was a brief period during which the Iraqi National Museum was left unguarded, resulting in vandalism and looting of items of worldwide renown. Iraq sits on the ancient land of Mesopotamia, home to the cradle of civilization that developed in Sumer. Sumerian artifacts are historic treasures of value not just to the nation of Iraq but to everyone in the world. Fortunately, many of the artifacts have been recovered in the years after the looting. But what was smashed is lost, after surviving 6,000 years to be crushed out of existence by an angry person.

It made me think about what else could have survived from Sumeria, something more malevolent than a dusty vase, that wasn't going to be easy to crush out of existence. I turned to Sumerian mythology, a fascinating set of stories with intrinsic interest for readers. To mention just one example, consider that the Sumerians believed their gods were extraterrestrials who came to Earth to mine for gold, among other reasons. The mythology was so wonderful on its own that all I needed was a jumping-off point for the series. In the mythology, all of the gods left Earth to return to their home planet, so I just had to make sure a few demons were left behind on Earth and survived into the present. I love the characters, the world, and the moral dilemmas that resulted, and writing the Mortal Path series has been intensely satisfying. - DB

Dakota Banks has worn a number of hats, including those of corporate analyst, independent computer consultant, and pet store employee (the one who cleans the cages). When she tried on a writer's hat, something magical happened: It stuck to her head, no matter how hard she tried to shake it off and get back to something that paid the mortgage.

Growing up in a converted 1890s funeral home, complete with blood gutters in the basement floor, fueled Dakota's interest in the paranormal. Fascinated with archaeology since childhood, she found a way to blend her background with her passion in the story line for her Mortal Path series of urban fantasies.

Dark Time: Mortal Path Book 1 is a suspenseful paranormal thriller laced with ancient legends and a quest for redemption, a frightening scenario that could be tomorrow's headlines, and a heady dollop of romance. Maliha Crayne an action-oriented and sensual heroine. She walks among us, but lives a far different life as she risks her own in protection of the innocent. Sacrifice, book 2, and Deliverance, book 3 (March 2012), continue Maliha's adventures.

Dakota is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and lives in a St. Louis suburb with her husband, two sons adopted from Peru and Ethiopia, and two cats Snickers and Marble, who sometimes ghostwrite her books. Good stuff, too, if you speak Cat.

    A CK2S K2 Recommended Read!

Maliha Crayne is been on The Mortal Path, seeking redemption for centuries of slavery to the Sumerian demon Rabishu as his personal assassin. If she can save as many lives as she has taken before she dies, she is free. If not... she will be brutally tortured for eternity. She has gathered a small group of trusted individuals she has saved, who have dedicated their lives to helping her find a way to defeat the demons forever. However, one person she's not entirely sure about is her lover, the Immortal Jake, who is still slave to his demon.

Now Maliha has a new problem. Her friends are vanishing without a trace. She doesn't even know where to start to find them, until someone, another Immortal, starts leaving her little surprises to find. This mystery person has a plan, bring Maliha under her thumb to use Maliha and her remaining supernatural abilities for her skill as an assassin. If this woman gets her way, the Immortals will be in a position to rule the country, and maybe the world, to create their own hell on earth. Maliha must make a choice, cave in to the demands of the Immortal and save her friends, while risking her own soul to forever torment, or refuse and watch her friends die. In Maliha's life, there is no black or white, good or evil, only the gray line in between, if she ever hopes to find Deliverance for her friends... and herself.

I just have to say I love love LOVE The Mortal Path series! Each successive book gets better and better. Be forewarned, Deliverance is probably the darkest book yet in the series. Maliha has her own strict moral code, however shady it may be, that wavers from time to time, but never falls. When those she cares about are in danger, it's watch out world, Maliha will do whatever it takes to protect them as best she can.

Our villain in this book is one of the cruelest, deadliest, most evil, but oh so captivating characters I have ever come across. This woman is black to the core, and wait until you find out who she is! I suspected early on who this monster was, but still when her identity is revealed I shuddered at the nature of this woman, at the same time I thrilled that I was correct.

The mythology Dakota Banks has invented for this series is absolutely fascinating. I read these books as much for Maliha and company's adventures as I do the world Dakota has developed. We take a slight detour from one the overarching plots in the series, but that was perfectly OK. There is just so much going on here, with page after page of action, that I didn't really miss seeing much advancement in that one story line. Deliverance is a thrill ride that will keep you turning the pages long into the night, and when you reach the end, you will be eager for the next installment. Also... you gotta love those cars of Maliha's!

Dakota, keep to The Mortal Path, and I will keep buying!

"Deliverance: Mortal Path Book Three" is, as advertised, the third entry in the continuing adventures of Maliha Crayne, ex-immortal slave-assasin of an ancient Sumerian demon, now gone rogue in an attempt to set to rights all the terrible things she had done at the bidding of said demon. This demon rescued her from a burning stake after she was falsely accused of witchcraft some 300 years ago, granting her immortality and superpowers in exchange for her promise of obedience. Although no longer immortal and all-but-indestructible (except by losing her head), Maliha is still possessed of superhuman strength, speed, reflexes and endurance, all of which are slowly fading away as she ages in small spurts due to the action of the chief Sumerian god, Anu, as she travels around the world trying to save rather than take lives to balance the scales literally carved into her abdomen by Anu. This usually involves killing off some baddies that results in a net saving of lives, causing a rebalancing of the scales that is accompanied by significant pain and a variable amount of aging. If she can balance the scales before she dies, she is free, else becomes the slave of Anu forever.

In this third outing, one of her entourage, Yanmeng, a venerable Chinese man well along the path to total enlightenment (he can astral travel and communicate with Maliha no matter where she is) is kidnapped and the kidnapper holds him for ransom in return for Maliha's performing assassinations on demand. The kidnapper turns out to be another one of the ageless immortals beholden to a different Sumerian demon, who also happens to be an historical figure well known to fans of sanguinary history, and the main plot revolves around figuring out how to save Yanmeng and destroy the kidnapper.

This time around the body count is still very high, but the bed hopping is toned down considerably, in part because the whole story takes place over a few week's time, and in part because Maliha is just too dam busy kicking' ass and trying to save Yanmeng. All of the (still living) characters from the last novel are here and all play various important roles. Not all are still living by the end. There are one or two unexpected twists and turns, and we are introduced to someone who will probably join the team for the next outing.

I love this series. It's fast paced, fun, vicarious wish fulfillment for anyone who ever wanted to be a superhero with lots of money and excitement. There is an overarching theme of redemption and revenge as Maliha circles the globe searching for pieces to a lens that in combination with an ancient tablet will allow her to destroy all the Sumerian demons once and for all. She seems to acquire one of these pieces or so on each outing, which means that there will probably be at least 3 or 4 more books in the series. At least I hope so.

Recommended (note that one should read them starting with the first, in order, for maximum enjoyment).

Maliha Crayne, a woman who had made an agreement with a demon, became Ageless. After over 350 years she became aware that she no longer was willing to be an assassin for the demon. Malaya has become human with added abilities, such as super speed, faster healing, amazing strength. At this stage in the books she has pulled out the stops to help her friends and heal and valence her soul. This book is so full of action, and details it jumps off the pages at you. It's a great story. I want a few more books on the mortal path.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay, but....

Deliverance is the third in the Urban Fantasy series featuring Maliha, an ex-immortal assassin who has broken free from her daemon and is trying to balance the wrongs she made on his behalf. She retains some of her previous powers and travels under the guise of a best selling author.

She has a small gang of talented assistants who know what she is, and her boyfriend is "ageless" another human immortal with a dubious background. In this story one of her friends is kidnapped by a nasty piece of work who wants Maliha to act as an assassin once more, and if she refuses, then body parts will be delivered.

So fast packed action with a strong female lead character. Behind the plot are themes of trust and friendship but (thank Goodness) very little romance.

Neither of the two follow ups match the standards of the excellent first novel in this series although they are still quite readable. The problems in this one are sometimes the team dynamics are a bit clunky, there are some logic gaps and odd plot directions which leaves it as `okay' but it could have been much better with some tighter writing and editing.

Well, existence goes on. Same old, same old. I liked the book, but the story felt like a novella extended to a novel. I'll still proably buy the next one, in hope.
