Heroes All: Airmen of Different Nationalities Tell Their Stories of Service in the Second World War Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

This WWII history shares the personal stories of frontline airmen from all sides of the conflict gathered through original interviews.

Aviation historian Steve Bond has spent years interviewing veterans of World War II. He recorded the stories of former airmen and crewmembers who shared the same pieces of sky at the same time. The project brought together British and German, German and Russian, British and Italian, American and German—sometimes literally.

In Heroes All, Bond presents the stories of these veterans—some of whom are household names—with annotations and overviews providing historical context. This is not a book about the rights and wrongs of war, nor the strategies of the military commanders. It is about the experiences and feelings of those on the front line.

This volume includes stories and recollections from veterans of the Air Transport Auxiliary, British Army, Fleet Air Arm, Italian air force, Luftwaffe, Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force and Navy, Soviet air force, US Army, US Army Air Force, US Navy, and other groupings.

British professor Steve Bond presents an entertaining and informative oral history of World War II airmen in this 2010 Grub Street release. In all, HEROES ALL relates the service experiences of over 100 British, American, Russian, French, German and Italian airmen and ground crew, presenting a wide-ranging overview of the air war.

The men featured in the book served with the USAAF, USN, RAF, RCAF, Luftwaffe, FAA, Italian Air Force, ATA, etc. Some flew Spits, CR-32s, La 5s, P-40s, P-51s, Halifaxes, C-47s and so on; others serviced and maintained them. Their stories are divided into broad categories/chapters entitled 'Enlistment,' 'Training Days,' 'Defence - The Fighters,' 'Defence - The Bombers,' 'The Lonely Sea,' 'The Eastern Front,' 'Transports' and so on. The reminiscences, which range from a few sentences to several pages in length, are interwoven with Bond's narrative that provides background material.

Most of the men found in HEROES ALL aren't household names. In that sense, Bond's book is especially valuable for it presents the war as experienced by the 'common airman.' The stories relate the excitement, boredom, tragedy and happiness these men went through. Several accounts were especially noteworthy since they feature airmen who took part in the same air battles comparing their own experiences with those of their former foes and commenting on the other's memories.

All in all, HEROES ALL is a fascinating, broadbased account of the air war in the words of the brave young men who served in that war. Recommended.

This book's main focus seems to be on RAF aircrews. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but the British use a lingo that is hard to follow, plus a dizzying array of acronyms that are hard to grasp. Also, the book could have used a little better editing; the stories jump around a lot and the "flow" just isn't very goodl.

Book is a little slow in the beginning, but has a lot of information.
