Attachments: Why You Love, Feel and Act the Way You Do Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 589 ratings

Unlock the secret to loving and lasting relationships! This book is for anyone who desires closeness, especially in the most intimate relationships: marriage, parenting, close friends, and ultimately with God.

The answer to why people feel and act the way they do lies in the profound effect of a child's bonding process with his or her parents. How successfully we form and maintain relationships throughout life is related to those early issues of "attachment."

Author Dr. Tim Clinton is recognized as a world leader in mental health and relationship issues—and he knows intimately what it is like to feel unloved. The child of a mentally ill mother who locked him in a closet and a father who was frequently gone, Clinton struggled with attachments for many years before discovering the secret to loving and being loved.

Citing four primary bonding styles, you will learn:

  • Why we love, feel, and act the way we do
  • How to conquer depression, anxiety, anger, and grief
  • How to be a sensitive, secure parent to your children
  • How God’s love is enough to penetrate the brokenness and remove negative emotions from your life

If you have come out of a painful, damaging, or traumatic past, reading this book will teach you how to experience the love and closeness you long to feel.

This book is a true gift to parents and children, and children who grow up broken by life, trauma, and sin.

Attachments will not classify you and dehumanize you, nor will it leave you with a sense of bitterness and blame for what may or may not have been provided for you in childhood. Childhood is a sacred time and so many things- for good and evil- impact us from those years.

What attachments will do is shine light - a gift from God- on your soul and offer you self awareness. Light does not change reality, but simply reveals it. This is too much for some people and they will reject and rebel against it. But for many who have ears to hear, this book will guide you on your journey to wholeness in Christ.

Personally coming from childhood trauma and a home of multiple divorces, this book has been a critical victory on my journey of understanding some of the dysfunction within. What is more, it has helped moved the needle from medicate-my-pain to process-my-pain, with God and others. This processing, combined with some of the disciplines mentioned in this book, may result in nothing short of transformation as it has in my life.

My hope and prayer for everyone who reads this book- and I believe everyone should- is that you will receive the truth, bring that to God, and learn to live from the foundation that you are deeply loved by God. From that foundation, emotional wholeness and rich, self giving relationships are within reach. May it bless your life, and the lives of your children / future children.

This is one of the best, most comprehensive yet manageable length books I know on the crucial topic of our era. ATTACHMENT DISORDER fills our prisons, fosters divorce, mangles children, sets up rapes, trashes self-worth; shreds society; destroys redemptive culture . . . is a horrific tool used to destroy lives and good in many institutions in our society.

The authors take a complex subject and communicate it clearly and simply.

And, there are 10 steps for adult victims of ATTACHMENT DISORDER to help overcome the terrible consequences of such a childhood.

The fact that MRI studies now show that serious ATTACHMENT DISORDER actually results in physiological "brain damage" in the areas of the brain having to do with emotional expression and managing relationships is plenty sobering enough.

Seeing the parade of horrible leadership; rampant divorces; destroyed, terminated babies; rebellious teens; drug, alcohol, work, shopping etc addictions . . . it's easy to begin to feel hopeless.

The authors provide wonderful practical rays of hope for those SERIOUSLY concerned and SERIOUSLY interested in becoming better, more healed and whole adults in meaningful, fulfilling and lasting emotionally connected and joyful relationships.

If I could afford to, I'd buy one for every parent and teen in America . . . and around the world.

I've given what I could away already. It's also available on Kindle.

Sincerely,
Dr D, PhD Clinical Psychology

If you really want to see yourself in the REAL light, this is a must read. I saw things in my life as well as the relationships around me. It gave me a clear understanding of why I act and do the things I do as well as people around me. In the past 2 years I have had some major things happen in my family and relationship. I feel this book has helped me in seeing the real picture in front of me and has helped in my decision making for the better.
Warning! You will see yourself in a different light! If you truly want a change and head in a new better direction, this is a great start.

I really enjoyed this book. It does mention Christianity, but it's not overwhelming. Just skip over those parts if it bothers you-- or don't buy the book, but it is worth reading. I like the science it includes, such as how we develop attachment styles from birth. Unfortuantely I lost the book on an airplane flight and wasn't able to fully read through it :(

I listened to this on Libby then had to buy it. I have also bought copies for friends and family now. This is a life changing book that everyone should read. I love that it not only talks about different types of attachment, but also why you react the way you do and most importantly how to improve and have better relationships. And it is all centered on God which is beautiful.

Even after reading just the first few chapters together with my husband, we were able to discuss some of our deep (and some deeply buried) childhood soul wounds, recognize how important it is to have secure parental and marital relationships are, and eventually talk about our fears and how to truly have a secure relationship with each other.

For non-Christian’s, it doesn’t bring God up often so it seems pretty non-threatening. For Christians (and non-Christians) God absolutely facilitated a marriage-changing conversation with my husband while reading this book!

Eye opening. Learned a lot about myself and recognized my own insecure relationship patterns. Now comes the hard part of changing them. I have been in recovery for twenty years and it always amazes me that I still have so far to go.

This is a wonderful book which I wished I'd found years ago. It manages to be both clear and straightforward about the psychology as well as readable. It describes how our experiences of loss and separation can shape our relationships and then provides some really useful insights into how we can work on this. The writers bring their Christian faith into this and demonstrate how a healthy relationship with our creator can provide a safe haven for us to heal. But for they also show how childhood loss might hinder us in growing secure in God's love. They then manage to get very practical about how to move forward, learn and acquire new security. Full of helpful stories which explain what's going on in our hearts. I recommend this book.
