On Language: Chomsky's Classic Works: Language and Responsibility and Reflections on Language Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 272 ratings

The two most popular titles by the noted linguist and critic in one volume—an ideal introduction to his work.

On Language features some of Noam Chomsky’s most informal and highly accessible work. In Part I, Language and Responsibility, Chomsky presents a fascinating self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking. In Part II, Reflections on Language, Chomsky explores the more general implications of the study of language and offers incisive analyses of the controversies among psychologists, philosophers, and linguists over fundamental questions of language.

Language and Responsibility is a well-organized, clearly written and comprehensive introduction to Chomsky’s thought.” —The New York Times Book Review

Language and Responsibility brings together in one readable volume Chomsky’s positions on issues ranging from politics and philosophy of science to recent advances in linguistic theory. . . . The clarity of presentation at times approaches that of Bertrand Russell in his political and more popular philosophical essays.” —Contemporary Psychology

Reflections on Language is profoundly satisfying and impressive. It is the clearest and most developed account of the case of universal grammar and of the relations between his theory of language and the innate faculties of mind responsible for language acquisition and use.” —Patrick Flanagan

Avram Noam Chomsky (/ˈnoʊm ˈtʃɒmski/; born December 7, 1928) is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, logician, social critic, and political activist. Sometimes described as "the father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy, and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He has spent more than half a century at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is Institute Professor Emeritus, and is the author of over 100 books on topics such as linguistics, war, politics, and mass media. Ideologically, he aligns with anarcho-syndicalism and libertarian socialism.

Absolutely for anyone interested in all aspects of language. Well structured observations on what and how we say and tell or has been said and told to us. A wonderful mind-f**k, necessary for understanding the bending and re-shaping of contextual usages, the evolution of the label placed, replaced, and misplaced on the image and how it affects the difference between hearing and listening to what is said and reading and understanding what is written. Never mind my opinion, just read it for yourself.

Good book

This book contains Chomsky's most succint analyses of language. Don't expect much politics though (although inevitably some of Noam's politics come through at certain points) as this collection is mostly meant for linguists.

Chomsky's challenges to (you name it) the status quo, the politics of the world or, above all, the language and its use, are evident on every page of this interview.

Sometimes there are books that are considered "classics" that do not stand the test of time. This is not one of those books. It can be heavy going at times, but every page is worth dwelling on.

Chomsky's classic work is a great understanding on the origin of language. His argument is very persuasive.

But this book is hard to read due to his peculiar and overly-academic writing style. I learned very little from it. Frankly. I felt I overpaid. Not recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars Tough

I must admit I give up just after the first half... It's not the right period for me for a book like this. It's well written and the subject is very interesting but this kind of book must be "studied" and not simply read. Chomsky is a master on this subject but if someone wants to buy it... be careful: you need a lot of concentration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of dialogue

Very interesting.

However, I don't have the name of the translator.... which is odd. But, as always, a fascinating read. Though, given these are written records of spoken discussion, don't expect structure. But I would have loved to have asked Chomsky these questions so love being able to read his responses.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kompliziert und vermutlich eher überholt

3.0 out of 5 stars most of it is incomprehensible to the layman...

But the rest is essential. its just that a lot of it is for the initiated linguistics student (in spite of the few claims it makes that it's written for a general audience...) and goes heavy into linguistics jargon for extended periods. it was a very hard first read, and im not inclined to read it again. ive tried. i dont regret buying it, but i cant recommend it. i recommend you watch michel gondrys doc "is the man who is tall happy?" its an interview with chomsky, and is actually a pretty good coverage of his linguistics. besides that, there are innumerable chomsky linguistics lectures on youtube, which are quite a bit more digestible than this book.
