Jane Hardy Miller was born and raised in California, where she eventually attended college and law school. Her mother, a home economics teacher, taught her to sew by hand and machine, beginning at age five. Jane made her first quilt in 1968, and for the next ten years, she made about one per year, inventing techniques as she went along. She practiced law briefly in Hawaii and California before moving to Miami in 1979, where she married, had two children, and finally took a beginning quilting class. She has been working and teaching in a local quilt shop since 1987.

If you love French Braid Quilts, as I do, then you will find this book to be very useful. These is my favorite type of quilts to make and I learned a lot from this book. I have other books by the same author and each ones add a bit more to my understanding of the possibilities for design and construction of French Braid Quilts.

Outstanding condition and shipped immediately. This book is not for the beginner unless one would go little at a time. Would recommend some quilting knowledge before trying to complete the processes and guidelines in this book. I personally would consider this book more on the advanced level and not for anyone who tries to work through the steps too fast.

I was really excited about a book that used strip piecing for French Braid style quilts, and could not wait to see the 12 different patterns. The first thing I did was flip though to see the patterns (of course).

    1) There are not 12 separate french braid patterns. You are really only paying for 7 french braid patterns.
-3 of the patterns are identical to another pattern except for size of the finished product. I should note that in a good quilt book it is common to find sizing info to alter the finished product. In the absence of the sizing chart, it is not difficult to do the math myself.
-1 pattern is almost identical to another but uses slightly more pieces (ie squares of a similar color in a row instead of one large rectangle).
-1 pattern looks nothing like a french braid, it just uses left over parts from one of the other patterns.

    2) The pattern I purchased the book for is not what I am use to seeing as "strip piecing" There are several steps that are done with partial seams (if you have done serious quilting you know what I am talking about) and other steps use a traditional log cabin building out approach. The point of a strip quilt is that the strip piecing makes it FAST. I want this pattern, but I will have to alter it to sew it in a timely manner.

The return shipping cost makes it not worth my while to send it back.
