His Pretend Wife (Silhouette Special Edition Book 1536) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

A SHAM MARRIAGE…

When a near-fatal accident landed loner Jack Slade in the hospital, Abby had only claimed to be his wife to keep her promise to him. Besides, Jack needed her, and she was determined to stay until he was healed. But would her heart recover when it was time to leave?

THAT WAS ALL TOO REAL

Jack knew better than to get involved with elegant Miss Abigail Pierce. For their marriage was only a pretense, wasn’t it? The kisses they shared didn’t mean anything; the fact that his icy heart was beginning to thaw didn’t matter. Except that he wished Abby would stop being his temporary wife…and become his permanent soul mate.

This is a truly moving story. The other reviewer stated that she couldn't connect with Abby, however I felt just the opposite was true. Perhaps the fact that so much of the story is internalized for the characters that it might appear too intellectual, but that is what made me root for them. Through their thoughts, the reader can see how these seemingly opposite people are absolutely made for each other. Most of the book takes place in a hospital and rehabilitation center, so the author's use of this type of narrative is completely realistic given these settings. The reader follows Jack and Abby as they go from strangers to friends to falling in love. Their interactions with each other are inspiring. The plot itself is well paced with just the right amount of medical detail to explain to the reader what Jack is going through without being a procedural. I love the fact that sometimes Abby's good intentions to help Jack's recovery didn't always work, but that he would grit through it for her sake. Getting to know these characters hopes, fears and dreams made their happy ending even more romantic. Personally, I felt very connected to them. For any reader looking for a beautifully written romance with an amazing hero and heroine, this book is for you.

    And my review:

This book is the sequel to THE WEDDING BARGAIN, but it should be noted that HIS PRETEND WIFE does work as a stand-alone. You don't need to read the preceding book for this one to make sense.

Those who have read THE WEDDING BARGAIN will enjoy the return of characters Olivia and Drew, now expecting their first baby, and have appearances that are sprinkled throughout the book.

I enjoyed HIS PRETEND WIFE, but not as much as the preceding book. The non-communication between Jack and Abby when on until the last five pages of the book, which got to be really irritating. It took a real kick in the seat of his pants (several of them, in fact) before Jack would finally admit his love. I just wanted to shake him sometimes! Abby was a likeable character, but not one that really left much of an impression on the reader. Even by the end of the book, I didn't feel like I knew what made her tick. She wasn't as cold as she'd seemed at the beginning of the story, but she didn't feel like an old friend, which is what most romance reader will want.

Maybe I just expected more of this book since I'd enjoyed THE WEDDING BARGAIN so much. Still, that being said, this was an okay read to pass a couple of hours, and not a book I regret reading, especially if you've already read the preceding book and want to know what happened to Jack and Abby.
