4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

Rescuer…Protector…Husband?

Miss Hester Waring’s father was a wastrel and a drunkard, who had alienated most of Sydney society. When he died, Hester found herself destitute and alone, with no one to rely on. Her rescue came from a most unlikely source—Mr.Tom Dilhorne, an ex-convict, now the richest man in Sydney. He engineered a teaching job for her, but knew that if he was to be accepted by society he needed a lady for a wife. And Hester was every inch a lady. Luckily the skinny schoolteacher wasn’t at all his type, so he wouldn’t be in danger of losing his heart…would he?

Review readers take note: don't allow yourself to be dissuaded from reading this lovely book by one negative critique. Consider carefully the criticism: could anything be more irrelevant as a criticism of a character's hair color???? Well, possibly the criticism of the cover to a Kindle reader. What makes a hero more heroic than cleverly humiliating a villain? And what would a story be without a conflict of some sort? It amazes me what some people criticize.

I would so much rather think about this book, which was simply a delight to read. The heroine, with the rather unlovely name of Hester, has a riches to rags to riches story - and it is oh, so satisfying to see her tale unfold. Buffeted by a drunkard father, unloved by a selfish mother and abandoned to a harsh, lonely hardscrabble existence, she is presented as a straggling, starving ugly duckling spinster. Yet, there's hope...

Tom is as rich as she is poor, but he has risen to his present position through his own industry, having been transported to Australia through England's harsh penal system. Money and success have not been enough to allow a former convict to be accepted by society, and he remains very much an outsider. Tom, however, simply doesn't care and virtually ignores society. He makes a delectable hero.

He somehow can't ignore Hester's plight and sets to help her a bit. He helps her get a job, which brings her more to his attention. Progressively his interest is piqued and therein lies our story. The VERY special, VERY romantic story of how the ugly duckling and the former convict fall in love - and are each transformed in the process.

Is there anything better than a thoroughly competent hero, one you can always depend upon to do the right thing and settle scores appropriately? One who falls in love so gradually that he hardly knows what hit him? One who never expected love? And, is there anything more satisfying to read about than the transformation of an ugly duckling into a swan? Well, I, for one loved reading about Mr. and Mrs. Dilhorne.

Enchanting. Easy to visualize. Vivid characterizations. Beautifully flowing storyline. Charming. Witty banter. Evocative romance. I don't have enough descriptive powers to express how much I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's one of those books that you read slowly, not wanting their story to end. I thoroughly enjoyed this author's imagination - she has the rare gift of creating delicate magic. As you may have guessed, I loved it.

Awesome story by a new-to-me author. By choice I've read few novels about life in the penal colony settlements although I have read some of the historical happenings. This book focuses on New South Wales when Lachlan Macquarie served as Governor (1810-1821) during which period, there were great advances in social and economic developments primarily due to Macquarie's policies relative to his treatment of the convict settlers (Emancipists), whom he decreed should be treated as social equals to free-settlers (Exclusives).

Our Main Guy, Tom Dilhorne, embodies most of the character qualities I find most desirable in my heroes. He's an Emancipist who was not only brought to Sydney on one of the infamous prison hulks - decommissioned ships used by the British government as floating prisons - he has literally thrived in this new world after having served his time. He's the wealthiest man in Sydney with power, influence and the means to obtain the knowledge he needs about pretty much anything and/or anyone.

Our heroine, Hester Waring, is from the "Exclusive" group but she is a very sad, pitiful case bound by the rules of pride for genteel women who struggle with poverty. In fact, I found myself becoming angry at all those former friends of hers who conveniently refused to see how she was suffering. Her gentleman father - if he could be termed such - gambled away everything, then died leaving her all alone without a feather to fly with. She applies for the position of the new schoolteacher even as she slowly starves.

Everyone notices her, but the only person with the sensibilities and the gumption to help her is Tom Dilhorne. He's on the school board and is able to turn the other board members' opinions - who would have denied Hester the job -- so that they agree to give her a chance to prove herself. Tom is tasked with the oversight of Hester's performance in her new job. Problem is, Hester's father hated Tom and has turned her heart against him before she had a chance to know the real man behind the reputation.

So, that's the foundation from which the story goes forth. I loved the way Tom decides to take responsibility for Hester in such a manner that she receives help without really being able to refuse his efforts. Their journey together is fascinating as they ever so comfortably move toward some peace together, then friendship, then a marriage in name only - eventually resulting in a quite remarkable relationship. I won't give away the details, but Tom is the type of man who exemplifies the qualities many of us most desire in a partner. He was a giver, he had great insight, he was determined, he did not rush his fences, he was faithful - in short, he was amazing. Hester blossoms under his care and we are privileged to be along as she is restored to wholeness.

There is a villain in the book, but we know from the beginning, Tom has the goods and he will prevail. Very heartwarming story in so many ways.

I rarely if ever write a review for anything, but this book compels me to write one. This is a romance novel in the truest sense of the word. The relationship is realistic and so full of love and caring and light. I can't really explain it, but I want a romance like this. Most of the romance heroes are so Alpha and a bad past is their excuse to act like utter cads, but Tom...Tom, Tom, Tom is amazing. He has a past that could give rise to the coldest, hardest and someone meaner and darker than Anne Stuart heroes . He is ruthless yes, but the way he treats Hester is exquisite. That's the only word I can think of for their romance.

Hester is wonderful too. She is courageous and fun and funny and someone I could really relate to. Even the villains are more than two dimensional. I just really really loved this book. I don't want the "romance' of most of the romance novels I read, but this one, this is the kind of love I want in my life. I can't give a book any higher praise.

This is one of my favorite books, as there is a kindness between the two people despite their difference in life. She is of the right class, but slowing starving to death in from of her own class. He is and ex-convict, who very rich, but of the wrong class, it's his kindness to her that brings them together.
