Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 6,870 ratings

The runaway New York Times bestseller!

Can a simple concept shift your entire world? Bob certainly thinks so. When it comes to loving your neighbors, rather than focusing on having the "right answers" or checking the "right boxes," what if you decide to simply DO love? To shamelessly show love and grace to those around you? What would that look like?

It might look like spending sixteen days in the Pacific Ocean with five guys and a crate of canned meat. It might look like taking your kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state. It might look like taking a road trip with a stressed-out college student--even though you just got married a few days before.

In Love Does, Bob shows you:

  • how to live a fully engaged life
  • how to stop putting things off until "next time" and instead find your place of imagination, whimsy, and wonder today
  • that God usually chooses ordinary people to get things done

When love does, life gets interesting. Light and fun, unique and profound, the lessons drawn from Bob's life and attitude in this collection of stories just might inspire you to be secretly incredible, too. If you love Love Does, don't forget to check out Everybody, Always and Dream Big for more of Bob's delightful and inspiring stories!

A book that began a movement

A book that began a movement
This book is a collection of silly stories that point to what is love, specifically, what is the nature of love. Because love is hard to know what it is. Often times love has been bad, for some people. This book points toward what good love is. And, it has a byline that speaks to Jesus. But that is a sidenote, because it is mostly a book of funny stories that speak to the nature of love. This book started a movement. People in my town began to put signs in their yards with messages like "Don't give up" and "Your mistakes don't define you". The goal was to speak to the young people in our community who were struggling, and to reduce the suicides that would happen in our youth each coming year. The woman who began this did so because she was motivated by this book. This was enough for me to begin reading this book to my 10 and 14 year old with the hope to teach them about the nature of love. I recommend this book because it is very different in some ways, and in those ways it is also a nice read -- especially for young people.

What a great read. Bob seems like the kind of guy that you just want to sit down and chat over a campfire and laugh at all his wild stories and yet feel completely compelled by how the way he ties in our amazing Lord to it all. I laughed throughout the book at his wit and humor but was warmed in my heart by the experiences he went through. What a great book.

Life is meant to be lived, not just endured. Love is not transactional it is an unstoppable force. When love speaks deep in our heart we need to listen and act. It is easy to talk ourselves out of doing the loving thing and miss out on the wonder and joy of love in action. This book reveals the life changing power of love. Love is more than emotion, more than feeling. Love is action. Love does. Love will forever change your life. Your love will then forever change the lives of those who experience first hand what love does.

I read this book because my daughter mentioned she was reading it a story at a time and I liked the title and the premise. What I got out of it was wonderful thought provoking stories that made me think of my own experiences and the lessons learned. In the end and equally along the way Love Does. It’s a title and an affirmation and a reminder to Love using the talents and experiences that your life has given you to impact people in a positive way- not for any recognition or personal gain but for the growth of Love itself. It’s written from a Christian perspective but also understood by this Jewish guy because real Love is Love.

Sometimes theologians need to read books to motivate and inspire. Sometimes they just need to read something to make them laugh. I read a lot of pretty head stuff. For instance, I just finished a 700 page book by Tom Schreiner called, The King in His Beauty. To compare Schreiner's book with Love Does by Bob Goff would be a little unfair. Schreiner's book is intended to be a serious book about biblical theology. Goff's book is not designed to be a theological treatise. It's designed to motivate and inspire.

A while back, I responded to a blog post by Donald Miller. I entitled the post, A Black and White Proposal: Farewell to Fuzzy Thinking. My good friend, Ron read the post and knows that I'm not a big fan of Miller's book, Blue Like Jazz. When I visited Ron in Okinawa, Japan he encouraged me to read Miller's book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. I resisted. He persisted. I had other important things to read. He wouldn't give up. Ron said, "Dude, you're a cyclist. Miller's a cyclist. You're gonna dig this book." So because I love and respect my friend, I actually decided to read A Million Miles. Ron was right. I loved it. In fact, I need to read it again!

There is a story that stood out to me in A Million Miles. It was a story about a wide-eyed friend that Miller made somewhere along the way; a story about a guy who loves life and made a huge impression on Miller. I'm not sure how I made the connection, but somehow it became clear to me that Miller's friend with Bob Goff. So I eagerly devoured his book, Love Does.

Love Does is a series of brief meditations; short stories that provide a window into the life, loves, and passions of Bob Goff. The subtitle is an accurate reflection of what Goff intends to communicate in the book: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World.

While Love Does is not designed to be a theology book, the author does bring theological commitments to the table. For instance, in Chapter 29 he admits that he quit attending what Christians call a "Bible study." The idea behind this practice is this: The author argues, "We don't need to study Him anymore to know Him." I understand what Goff is getting at here. He's tired of storing theological facts in his brain that don't make a difference in the real world. And this is certainly commendable. The problem is that Christ-followers are called to study the truth of God's Word - which involves a careful study of Christ (2 Tim. 2:15). And while the intentions appear commendable, the popular notion of "deeds not creeds" is, in the final analysis not Scriptural. We are instructed to be "filled with a knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God" (Col. 1:9b-10). So this is not an either-or proposition. Christians are not given a choice to study or live out the claims of the gospel. They are commanded to do both! And living out the gospel (what Goff creatively calls, "Love does") is a supernatural result of one's knowledge.

Having said that, if readers approach Love Does with the right perspective, they'll find it strangely liberating. It is filled with encouraging stories and pithy bits of wisdom drawn from the real world of Bob Goff. And this guy knows how to do life. He truly is a breath of fresh air! My encouragement would be - read this book. Read it with discernment. Allow Bob Goff to rub off on you. And learn from his example of living life with passion and intentionality.

What a joy it has been reading this book. My wife and I were on holiday at the North Coast of South Africa over January for our "babymoon", that's right, we are having a child, our first child, a daughter. We are too excited, but here is something you need to know about my wife... She loves the beach and you can say, she does the beach. She can sit on the beach and look at people for days without budging, and here is something you should know about me... I don't. The first two days went okay and then I started getting bored, so I was forced to figure our my Kindle app for iPad. I am very glad about all this, because if I hadn't had to, i would not have read Love Does.

This book has taught me a lot, it didn't need to convince me that Love does things, I knew that from the Bible, but it just reminded me of the great things that can come off doing things in love. I started pursuing my dreams, what I really wanted to do, and where I believe I would have the most impact on life for hat matter sometime last year, by pursuing a career in coaching rugby professionally. And it was just amazing how things fell in place once I decided this, as if God was acknowledging my choice. Anyhow, this book confirmed things for me and I feel blessed that it crossed my path.

I'd recommend this book to anyone as I have Blue Like Jazz and A Million Miles In A Thousand Years by Donald Miller, who is also mentioned in this book a lot. I would like to thank Bob Goff for sharing these brilliant and inspiring stories, and I hope. They motivate people to live better ones, as it has me.

Love is not just a four letter word or a feeling, it is alive, it does things and it makes us do things. I am happy to know Love.

Excellent book - beautifully and humorously written stories which illustrate love in action. Living life to the full, living life on the edge, taking risks and living life to impact positively the lives of others. An inspiration to be somebody who walks the walk. Bob Goff is both humble and straight in his message which compels each if us to 'do love'.
