A deputy discovers Meriwether Lewis’s journal in this modern-day mystery by an author who “writes about the rural West better than anyone” (Rocky Mountain News).

When he’s asked to serve as a consultant for a documentary about the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark’s expedition up the Missouri River, Gabriel Du Pré’s impulse is to flee. Eastern Montana isn’t accustomed to getting much attention, and its residents prefer it that way. But the director of the film is dating Du Pré’s daughter Maria, so this hard-bitten fiddler’s hands are tied.

The Métis Indian lawman agrees to act as a guide and help the filmmakers navigate the river, which is as deadly now as it was in 1805. The Missouri has claimed nine lives in the past three years—a suspiciously high death toll the FBI wants Du Pré to investigate. While trolling the riverbanks, Du Pré stumbles upon a national treasure: Meriwether Lewis’s lost journals, which the American government will do anything to get back. Meanwhile, when members of the film crew start dying, Du Pré begins to wonder if the locals hate outsiders so much they might be willing to kill to keep them out.

“Bowen’s exuberant storytelling mines the rich cultural history of the West . . . [and features] delightfully extravagant characters” (
Publishers Weekly).

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The fierce and fiercely guarded independence of Montanans is always on display in Bowen's series about Gabriel Du Pr?, the Metis-Indian fiddler whose sleuthing talents and survival skills often take surprising turns. In his eighth outing (following 2000's The Stick Game), the thirst for independence, coupled with antipathy toward outsiders, leads to murder. Du Pr?, otherwise a strong, willful character, is usually putty in the hands of even stronger, more willful women, including daughter Maria, who persuades him to serve as a consultant to her boyfriend's film crew making a movie about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Du Pr? also finds himself trying to fend off requests from a federal lawman to investigate the disappearance in Du Pr?'s vicinity of nine Missouri River boaters in three years. Bowen's exuberant storytelling mines the rich cultural history of the West (Du Pr? discovers a hidden cache buried by the Lewis and Clark expedition, which includes journals kept by Meriwether Lewis, with amusing results). But as filmmakers, environmentalists and others threaten to flock to Montana to exploit or celebrate or appropriate its resources, a dark side emerges. Some Montanans will do anything to protect their lives and their way of life. Beneath Bowen's delightfully extravagant characters lurks a warning: the inevitable clashes between outsiders and natives are sometimes funny, sometimes violent, but ultimately tragic.

From Library Journal

This time out, series sleuth Gabriel Du Pr? (The Stick Game) serves as historical consultant for a documentary film about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Trouble erupts between movie people and locals, with mayhem and murder close behind. More finely crafted Montana scenery.

Great to learn more of the story of the Metis people, and the Lewis & Clark connection. Montana Mysteries are great. Gabriel Du Pre is a great character, but Bowen has a terrific bunch of great characters, and Montana is one of the best. Bowen obviously loves the state, and you will, too, if you read these books.

The best Du Pre of the first eight. From a Montanan (west of the Divide) this has already happened. The issues are real. Soon will be like California

Not your usual run of the mill Western crime fighter, Gabriel DuPre is unique. He's a cattle brand inspector and a fiddle player of renown, but also serves his community by helping to solve problems. Characters are complicated and interesting. I recommend this series.
