Long Son (The Montana Mysteries Featuring Gabriel Du Pré) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 230 ratings

“With his distinctive, minimalist prose . . . Bowen’s writing is lean. . . . An unsentimental, galvanizing portrait of life in small-town Montana” (Publishers Weekly).

For generations, the Messmers have raised cattle in the rough country of eastern Montana. When the current owners die in a tragic accident, they leave the ranch to their son—an ominous development for everyone in the area. Larry Messmer left Toussaint years ago when he got in trouble for bludgeoning a horse to death. Gabriel Du Pré hoped he would never set eyes on him again. Larry announces his return by having his ranch hands kill every weak cow on the property. Unfortunately, the livestock will not be the last to die.

The FBI asks Du Pré, a cattle inspector and occasional lawman, to keep an eye on Larry. What he uncovers is a ranch stricken by criminal greed, lorded over by a pathological son who should never have come home. And when violence erupts again, Du Pré finds himself in the cross hairs.

Long Son is the 6th book in The Montana Mysteries Featuring Gabriel Du Pré series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With his distinctive, minimalist prose, Bowen (Thunder Horse, etc.) once again transports readers to the vast open spaces of Montana, in the sixth entry of his Gabriel Du Pr? series. Sociopath Larry Messmer has returned to Toussaint, Mont., to take over the ranch his parents left him after their deaths in a tragic accident. Long despised and feared by residents for his cruelty, Messmer appears to be part of an organization intent on setting up some nefarious business on the ranch. At the request of a friend in the FBI, local Native American Du Pr? begins looking into the matter and discovers a long history of violence and murder. When Messmer himself is slain, however, his associates think Du Pr? is responsible, and he becomes the target of their revenge. Bowen's writing is lean and full of mordant observations. His hardy charactersAtough teachers, smart barmaids, rambunctious children, wise-cracking menAcome to life, and his wry humor ("How come things that are good for you taste terrible?" a little girl asks, and Madelaine responds: "That is how you tell.") provides relief from the haunting, wind-bitten cattle-ranch landscape. Bowen incorporates M?tis folklore and history to great effect, and he provides an unsentimental, galvanizing portrait of life in small-town Montana.

From Library Journal

After three members of a Montana family die suspiciously, their son and brother sells the family ranch. Only then does series protagonist Gabriel Du Pr? (Thunder Horse, LJ 3/1/98) discover several related suspect deaths. Storytelling and local atmosphere at their best.

As ever, Peter Bowen tells a great story. Whether it’s a true story or a fictional account based on a combination of historical events, this one was more fascinating than the last and impossible to put down. The characters are absolutely wonderful! I highly recommend all of Peter Bowen’s books!

This is the sixth book in the series and Gabriel finds himself neck-deep in affairs that took place over one hundred years ago. The snippets of life in Montana as seen through Gabriel's are priceless. This is a great series and I can hardly wait to read the rest.

With every book of this series I read, I find myself trying to figure out the whole the culprit is. Normally I am as confused as Du Pre is. But by the end of the story it makes sense. Again I am drawn into the story and can't put it down until I finish the story. I live how the author tells the story.

Another entertaining story about Gabriel Du Pre. I enjoy the stories and their relationship to the story characters. There is history regarding the storyline with Du Pre's ancestry and it is woven into the solving of the mystery. I also enjoy the "salty" language that is or was part of the culture of that time. If you are a fan of The Montana Mystery series by Peter Bowen, you will buy this book. Enjoy.

These Montana Mysteries are great. Gabriel Du Pre is a great character, but Bowen has a terrific bunch of great characters, and Montana is one of the best. Bowen obviously loves the state, and you will, too, if you read these books.

It is hard to decide how to review these Gabe Du Pre mysteries. Gabe and everyone else around him seems to live a life of "eat-more-beef," "drink whiskey while driving," and drive well above the speed limit. It is at once a simpler lifestyle and a thumb in the eye of authority of all kinds. Californians and environmentalists are the ill-informed and despicable enemies and Gabe, who works as a brand inspector, has a life in which he always has enough money (about which he cares not at all) and plenty of time (about which he cares a lot).

I've read nine of these guys and they read very fast. They are formulaic and repetitious across books. The mysteries themselves are interesting, but not overly complicated. I cannot explain why I have read them one, after the other, like eating potato chips. I can tell you that the ninth one was the point when I knew I was done. These books just aren't quite good enough.

These are like much weaker versions of Tony Hillman novels. There the protagonists seem to have deeper values and beliefs and the mysteries are more interesting and complex.

So, I have given most books of the nine books in the series that I have read a three-star rating, with just a couple getting a two-star rating because they had weaker plots or characters.

This terrific murder mystery series evokes Montana, the history of the Metis people and is brim full of wonderful characters. Peter Bowen's ear for dialogue is just about perfect. I read this whole series over again about every three years. Good mystery, and laugh out out funny, and sometimes tears..
