Life Is a Gift: The Zen of Bennett Kindle Edition

A moving and inspiring memoir from one of the greatest musical artists of all time

"My given name is Anthony Dominick Benedetto, and Benedetto in Italian means 'the blessed one.' I couldn't say it any better than that."
—Tony Bennett

Legendary singer, artist, and performer, Tony Bennett has been one of the world's most beloved entertainers for more than six decades. From the 78 to the LP to the digital age, Tony has done it all and is still at the top of his game. In decade after decade, this artistic icon—who has won seventeen Grammys, sung for ten presidents, and performed for royalty—has refused to compromise his vision or values. His unwavering commitment to quality has helped him stay true to his classic sound and is the reason his music continues to endure. Mentored by such legends as Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole, Bennett has only gotten better with age, and his popularity continues to grow as each new generation discovers his timeless songs and incredible voice.

In this entertaining and thoughtful memoir, a collection of soulful reflections and philosophies from his life and career, Bennett shares stories of friends and family and the essential lessons they have taught him: of the value of hard work and of creating art that continues to inspire; of perseverance and a dedication to excellence; of the necessity of humility, love, respect, and, most important, gratitude. Bennett cherishes the passion and insatiable thirst for knowledge that have shaped his life and made each day a journey of discovery. He pays tribute to all the remarkable talents he has had the honor to work with and to learn from, including Luciano Pavarotti, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Amy Winehouse, Willie Nelson, Lady Gaga, David Hockney, and k.d. lang, to name just a few.

A magnificent testament to an extraordinary man and his art, and illustrated with Tony Bennett's own beautiful hand-drawn artwork, Life Is a Gift is a work that will captivate, delight, and be cherished by music lovers of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* At 86, iconic singer Bennett looks back on 60 years as a performer still beloved and loving what he does. Bennett has sung for presidents and royalty as well as adoring fans, carefully singing only well-crafted songs from the Great American Songbook . Bennett attributes his style to the techniques he learned in method-acting school as a young man on the GI Bill as well as from the lessons he learned from others during his long career, from Duke Ellington and Johnny Mercer to Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Among his memories: a tired and aging Fred Astaire bemoaning the fact that when he went to parties all the women wanted to dance with him, yet spontaneously breaking into a dance; Judy Garland’s practical jokes; appearing with Rosemary Clooney on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts, a forerunner of American Idol; collaborating and touring with k.d. lang. Bennett ends each chapter with the Zen of Bennett—the personal beliefs that shaped his success as an artist and a human being. Among them are improve yourself every day, create things of lasting quality, and when you choose friends, you’re choosing teachers. Bennett offers inspiring observations from a joyful life fully lived. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Bennett is revered by many generations, and promotion for this generous, upbeat memoir will be prominent and lavish. --Vanessa Bush

Review

“Writing in the same style as he sings… Bennett shares countless tales about showbiz, his famous friends, his family, and his artistic career… he remains Zen-like in his delivery… Bennett’s tips for happiness, success, and longevity are like music to the ears.” — Publishers Weekly

“Bennett offers inspiring observations from a joyful life fully lived … [in] this generous, upbeat memoir.” — Booklist (starred review)

“In many ways, Bennett’s story reads like a classic American novel…Like the Zen principles he advocates, Bennett writes in simple, plain prose….revealing stories that define his path and unique perspective… readers can almost hear his distinctive cadence as he waxes nostalgic…celebrity and career anecdotes will likely appeal to fans.” — Lisa Ko, author of The Leavers

“Bennett’s career has had a peerless longevity and has likely provided him with wisdom and anecdotes for two or three books of this nature…there is…a great deal of wisdom in the [Zen] suggestions at the close of each chapter when they stem directly from Bennett’s own richly lived life.” — Kirkus Reviews

“A gentle read—maybe the equivalent of easy listening—filled with vignettes from the great crooner’s life and lots of stories on his showbiz pals—Sinatra, Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, and, more recently, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga.” — New York Post

Tony Bennett is one of the all-time great singers. He is, in addition, an extremely decent and caring human being. This book is not really "literary" in the sense that it tells a story with any continuity, but it is filled with interesting anecdotes from a man who knew all of the greats in popular music. It is filled with the gentle philosophy of a man who was an infantry soldier in WWII as a teenager, who was "colorblind" regarding race, and who had the courage to march to Selma with MLK. This book is more of a conversation with a very admirable man than it is a work of prose. One does not have to be a music lover to love this man and what he stands for. Get to know him. I heartily recommend this book.

This book is one of the most up building, encouraging things I have ever read. While some performers are prima donnas Bennett seems to have remained humble and has taken note of life's lessons. He seems to have found a way to be successful without exploiting others. His respect for all persons comes through loud and clear and he clearly does not look down upon others.

At 86 years of age he has maintained his viability as a singer, paints frequently and has a successful marriage to a woman forty years his junior. I'd say that his philosophy must be working.

It's a great read at a very good price. Likewise the DVD entitled "The Zen of Bennett" covers much of the same ground with some great music and recording studio scenes. Also highly recommended.

I read this philosophy+biography+art book several years back and fell in love with it. I added it to my "Must Get" book list and finally to my home library. This is one of my go-to books when I feel myself struggling with something and need a bit of inspiration, reminding of pursuit of dreams, core values, and life choices.

Tony's achievements are amazing but it's the thoughtful treatment of his anecdotes about very famous people that also set this book apart from other biographies. Don't go to "Life is a Gift" if you're looking for a "tell-all" biography. Read it for a greater sense of what moves and motivates this remarkable artist and human being. You'll find yourself sometimes sad about losses and regrets he recounts, inspired by his Zen of Bennett lists at the end of each chapter, and warmed by his thoughtful musings and touching tributes.

Tony GETS it -- life IS a miracle!

I LOVE Tony Bennett! This book is an interesting read. Not too detailed, but a good overall picture of what he's about. His general ideas of performing and general views of life are evident in this book as well as his stage performances. As a long time admirer,I can see quite clearly he is an honest and open person and no different onstage as offstage! That is VERY DIFFICULT to pull off in today's world of showbiz. No shocks here, just a nice book and the picture I got from seeing him perform and seeing interviews--that's TONY!There aren't many people worldwide, who have values and standards this repectable!

As a New Yorker and citizen of the world, my husband and I love Mr. Bennett! Such an insight to such a "epic" man. I know he would not think of himself as epic. However he is blessed with the ability to realize his bliss, and the ability to make it a part of his life.
I truly am enjoying this book. Note: I got the enhanced copy on my Kindle, but am watching it on my I pad. The enhanced version it totally worth it for the few extra dollars, especially if you are a Tony Bennett fan!
