Beloved Enemy Kindle Edition
Julia Chandler was a true daughter of the Confederacy, believing any man who wore Union blue was no man at all. But the magic of a costume ball transformed her, and she looked beyond his mask and saw in the eyes of Major Robert Montgomery the mirror of her very soul!
Major Rob Montgomery had good reason to hate Southerners. Hadn’t Rebel gunfire shattered his dreams along with his hand? And yet he yearned for even a moonlit glimpse of Miss Julia, a sheltered Virginia belle, forbidden him by war and politics, but destined for him by heart’s true love!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2004This book has much to recommend it. Mostly the incredible research that the author has done which lends itself to obvious authenticity. This starts as a 300 page 'harlequin' that usually, to me, means little depth. But I love civil war era stuff so I read it anyway. We have the typical injured yankee and
devoted reb belle.....and the belle trying to get out of an arranged marriage which leads to a prank where she meets our embittered hero. Pretty standard stuff. There aren't any hot love scenes, just tender words and emotions conveyed through sharkespeares sonnets and a few embraces. The 'hero' volunteers to get arrested so he can lead a bunch of officers out of libby prison...and the reality of the nightmare of that prison are fairly vivid. You'll either like this story or dislike it a lot, I guess but I enjoyed the change of pace. The author did a really good job fitting in historical info in a easy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2004Julia Chandler was a sheltered bookworm who never rocked the boat like her feisty younger sister, Carolyn. Julia was mostly content to bury herself in books and lose herself in dreams of becoming a teacher and what might have been had the Civil War not happened. With her sweetheart, Frank, killed at Manassas two years ago, Julia's scheming mother has decided that Julia will marry her cousin Payton. Although Julia's mother is fond of Payton, Julia thinks Payton is a toad and is only after her inheritance. Determined to refuse marriage to Payton, Julia and her sister sneak uninvited into a masquerade ball where Julia wants to find a Yankee to ruin her - although she doesn't exactly know what that means.
Robert Montgomery is a bitter major in the United States Army. After being shot in the hand at Gettysburg, his fickle fianc?e broke their engagement because he had lost the use of the wounded hand. Now he trusts no woman, but he can't help but be entranced by the lovely Julia. He can't help but be drawn to her, especially after the rather inebriated young woman asks him to have his dastardly way with her. Ever the gentleman, Rob declines, but he is determined to see her again - even after he learns she is loyal to the Confederacy. Can love triumph in the midst of war?
This book was excellent! If I could give it 10 stars, I would. Ms. Schaller obviously did her research on the Civil War, and perfectly blended real historical figures with the fictional characters in the book. I loved Julia because she was so determined and intelligent. I also loved the character of Rob because he was brave and devoted. There were some twists and turns in this book, so you were never really sure what would happen next! There was something for everyone in this book - romance, political turmoil, war, intrigue, misunderstandings, social scandal, espionage, and a host of other things that blended into an awesome story.
I didn't discover this until after I read the book, but Mary Schaller has also used the penname "Tori Phillips" and wrote several books for Harlequin set in the medieval era. So if you are a fan of Tori Phillips, you'll probably love this book too, even though it is set in a different time period. I love books set in the Civil War era, although Harlequin really doesn't seem to publish many of them. I wish they published more, especially if they were as well written as this one! This is easily one of the best romance novels I have ever read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 20101863, Alexandria Virginia. Sisters Carolyn and Julia Chandler, loyal Confederates, plot to crash a masquerade ball put on by Yankee railroad tycoon George Winstead. The Chandler's loyal servants help the young ladies sneak out from under their parent's watchful eyes (!!) and they're off to the ball, but Julia has other things in mind than just catching the eye of a handsome man. Her parents plan to wed her to her odious cousin Payton Norwood, and she gets it in her brain if she's debouched, he'll dump her (she doesn't quite know what it really means, but she means to do it). Handsome Yankee Major Robert Montgomery catches her eye and she thinks he'll fit the bill - especially when he starts quoting Shakespeare (the one bright light in this sorry book). Rob was wounded and lost the use of one hand at Gettysburg and his fiance dumped him for that, so he's a bit gun-shy of women, but he can't seem to resist Julia's attractions, hated Confederate that she is.
What follows is pretty much what you'd expect in your standard Harlequin historical romance, they meet, lust after each other, never confess their true feelings, have Big Misunderstandings (well duh), all ending up in a terribly silly and overly contrived plot to put Robert in a southern prison so he can help his fellow Yankees escape. Of course you know that Julia's going to have to get mixed up in the thick of things as she tries to dodge her less than ardent suitor Hayward (he's only interested in an inheritance she's soon to come up with).
*yawn*
The book started off well enough, albeit a bit on the light side, but by the time the action moved to Richmond and the prison things just started falling to pieces and got terribly silly indeed - as did some of the prose. I give kudos to the author for putting real events and characters in her story (at least according to her notes they were), but it wasn't enough to save this one from landing in the recycle bin. That said, outside of some heavy kisses there is no sexual activity so this might actually do well for a younger reader. Your call though, I don't have a teenage daughter, so I'm not the best judge of that.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2010Loved the Civil War setting. The book was wonderful! I enjoyed the storyline and I don't care if others considered it a "typical" plot. I found the characters very well written and I was never bored. I enjoyed the Shakespeare quotations and the fact that the book was clean i.e. romance but not hot & heavy. I also found it perfectly believeable at the end when Julia plans a visit home - having a child changes things and makes you value family even more. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.
