His writing in this first of the series is such that I could literally see the events in my head, which is what you hope for in every book and dp get somewhat, but this was more like watching a movie in my head... which doesn't happen often. The second book was not as well written, my least favorite of the whole series... but this first one was perfect. Reading about a vampire who isn't good but also isn't as bad as she wants to believe herself to be, who does extraordinary things and has been around since the very beginnings of humanity... since before history really began... amazing. She has been around for all of history, which you get to read in the later installments, but none of them beat this first book. It hooks you if you let it. Go into it with the knowledge that what you think you know of vampires is going to go away, expect action, adventure and mystery, and open your mind to the possibilities of a world we don't know exists... you'll love it. Read the first three pages and if you aren't hooked, don't read it... but if you do, and are, go on the ride... I was hooked by the first few paragraphs...
I was very excited to read this book when I read the description. I am a fan of strong female leads in non-chick-lit paranormal fiction. The author, however, I think bit off more than he could chew. Probably the biggest issue is pacing. The author races through the plot jumping from crisis to crisis without giving his characters much time to gel, mature or ruminate on their situation before jumping headlong into action. The root of the problem I think is that the author didn't plan the plot out well enough in advance of beginning writing: I think he often gets ahead of himself or paints himself into a corner because of this.
I can almost sense where the author lined out a passage and said "wait... let's do this instead. Yeah, it would be way cooler if this happened!" For example there is one character that is introduced, we get to know him, and just when we are thinking this character might be a main protagonist in the story, he is summarily killed off and replaced by another male lead. Finally, as you might imagine by how rushed the story feels, there are some inconsistencies in the plot. At times Alisa is godlike in her prescience and her command of her abilities, and at others she is unforgivably gullible or suddenly incompetent or weak as needed to advance the plot. These inconsistencies border on deus-ex machina.
Despite these problems, the story isn't bad per se. The highlight of the book are the flashback or dream sequences: these are crafted with loving detail and feature some of the most poignant moments in the story. Clearly the author has talent: it's just unfortunate that he rushed the story so much that we can only grasp this in brief flashes.
