Great from the Start: How Conscious Corporations Attract Success Kindle Edition
Are you wondering how to turn your great new business idea into a successful company? Here’s the roadmap.
In Great from the Start, John Montgomery combines three decades of experience as one of America’s preeminent corporate lawyers with the wisdom of a wide range of startup industry veterans to offer the business secrets of Silicon Valley as an essential blueprint for any entrepreneur wishing to start a successful company. From raising venture capital to building a balanced team, from designing your culture to managing a board of directors, this book will help you experience the joy of building a successful company.
Finally, if you are a leader who aspires to operate from the heart, believes in abundance and plays power with instead of power over, Great from the Start suggests how you can leverage neuroscience and the science of consciousness to inspire and lead your corporation so that it is optimized for the people that work there.
“I have always struggled to communicate the multiple other relevant priorities, and the other intangibles required for a great execution. I found many of these in a new book, Great from the Start, by John B. Montgomery, which does a great job of laying out specifics, but also starts with a good summary of the intangibles, summarized as the five rules of relevancy.” —Martin Zwilling, Forbes
“A high impact book.” —Raj Sisodia, coauthor, Firms of Endearment and Conscious Capitalism, and founder Conscious Capitalism Institute

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2012This is a must-read book for entrepreneurs, their senior executives, investors and consultants to the entrepreneurial industry!
WHY? Besides being a great reference for entrepreneurs through different stages of growth, it speaks to the long unrecognized need of building a more substantial company foundation in the face of our emerging realities.
As a business coach & consultant to senior management of emerging technology companies for the last 20 years, I often see issues I am consulting on rooted in decisions made or not made in their early years. Sometimes irreversible decisions that limit their options and opportunities for growth in their future. These early decisions can create the difference between being a stellar company that attracts the best resources or an average company that just gets by.
Some of these early decisions speak to the power of culture in their organization. Building a culture that can be reflective of what it takes not only to be number one in their industry but a place that inspires the very best out of everyone who has the good fortune to work there. One example in the book is identifying a broader set of requirements in incorporation to hold the company and its board accountable to creating a "Great Company".
There are many more steps I could outline from the book but I would rather urge you to discover them for yourself and buy and read this book.
This book is not just for the entrepreneurs but essential for investors as well! The VC community could use this book as a starting point for a long unexplored area in their criteria of investing. Easily and quickly dismissed .... but in a decade of poor returns, this book is a door way to turning this around!
One last recommendation, I call it reading in between the words. There is more information in this book that just reading the words written. I think it is the author's intent to use his words as a pointer to greater and even more profound recognitions in using concrete steps to building a foundation to meet a fast moving complex unknown future! So expect much more from John Montgomery, the author, and keep your eyes open for him!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2012I have read 30 business/leadership books in 2012 and this is in my top five. Mr. Montgomery has so many great best practices to share to help leadership teams and companies build a "conscious capitalism based company". I have facilitated many, many strategic planning retreats with companies of all sizes and consider myself an expert on this topic. How the author outlines the importance of a compelling purpose, a clear vision, a well written business plan, effective core values, and taking all this and designing the culture from these is masterful. I humbly admit; I picked up some new tips!!!
Any CEO who looking to enhance their skills and build a team would benefit tremendously from reading this book. If you are a new start up you would be foolish not to read this book and share it with your entire leadership team. The book touches on subjects such as; how to most effectively work with a mentor/coach, what is true conscious leadership, how do you effectively build and engage a board of directors, building your brand, understanding investors, and my favorite of course, how do you build a balanced team and what can happen if you don't.
After sharing this fabulous book with numerous clients at all different stages of their business, I have received many "thank you's" in return. I am currently working with two of my executive coaching clients to support them as they begin to implement the best practices they have learned and what a great tool it has been for me as their coach.
I strongly recommend this book for any leader looking to improve their skills, grow a team or a company and any coach looking for a great tool to share with their clients.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2012This book is great for corporate leaders, leaders-in-training, and business owners who want to build a great business from the ground up.
"Great from the Start" is based on lessons learned by successful business incubators. It is an effort to build a repeatable process from Gordon Campbell's intuitive knack for helping startups launch and grow. The book is organized as a step by step guide from building the founding team, through finding funding. It's main examples are tech startups that went on to either "go public" for hundreds of millions of dollars or were acquired for similar amounts.
Even for owners in other industries or aren't interested in going public, this book still has valuable insights. It's perfect for those people interested in building and growing a business that employees enjoy working for and customers enjoy doing business with. I highly recommend it.
