Giant George: Life with the World's Biggest Dog Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 342 ratings

An "engaging, humorous... and compelling story" of one couple's unexpected life with the "runt of the litter" puppy who grew to be the largest dog... ever (Publisher's Weekly).
With his big blue eyes and soulful expression, George was the irresistible runt of the litter. But Dave and Christie Nasser's "baby" ended up being almost five feet tall, seven feet long, and 245 pounds. Eager to play, and boisterous to the point of causing chaos, this big Great Dane was scared of water, scared of dogs a fraction of his size and, most of all, scared of being alone.
Giant George is the charming story of how this precocious puppy won Dave and Christie's hearts and along the way became a doggie superstar. In 2010, George was named by Guinness World Records as the Tallest Dog in the World-ever. He appeared on Oprah, and even has his own global fan club. But to Dave and Christie, this extraordinary animal is still their beloved pet, the one who has made them laugh, made them cry, and continues to make them incredibly happy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the book is a well-plotted and compelling story, which takes us into the Nasser family dynamic: when Dave and Christie start trying for a baby, they encounter heartbreak. Startlingly honest and well-written, Giant George's story stands apart from the slew of other dog books on the shelves." Publishers Weekly (1/30/12)

I had been following Giant George's Facebook page before the book was released. I knew some of his back story, but not a lot. I purposely didn't read any of the reviews prior to purchasing the book. When the book arrived, I sat down and started reading the first page.....a couple hours later, I had finished the last page of the book. I looked around and my own 2 dogs were asleep next to me. I was so "into" the book that I didn't realize that it was getting dark outside. I had read the entire book the same day that I received it. My reason for beginning my review this way is to illustrate that for a person with a short attention span, and animal lover, I thought this book was excellent. Giant George is was filled with emotion, wit, humor, and most importantly, LOVE! A love for a dog that is undeniable.

This is a book for a true animal lover. Someone that doesn't have a clue about the unconditional love that an animal can share with it's human just wouldn't "get it." (Evident by a couple reviews here that were obviously written by people that didn't comprehend what they were reading.) This is the kind of book that you can send to a friend, or read over again.

Giant George isn't a novel, nor is it going to be put on a list for the Nobel Peace Prize. It is just a well written, true story about an amazingly BIG dog and his family. It's a good read.

I LOVE THIS SWEET AND GENTLE BOOK! IT WAS INSPIRING AND HEARTBREAKING, FUNNY AND VERY READABLE!!
A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF BIG DOGS BUT LIKE GEORGE, BIG DOGS ARE VERY LOVABLE. OUR BIG DOG WAS A LABRADOR MIX NAMED MILO AND WEIGHED ABOUT 125 #. HE AND GEORGE WOULD HAVE LIKED EACH OTHER! MILO DIED IN MAY 2008; WE'D HAD HIM SINCE JANUARY 1994. HE WAS THE BEST DOG--LOVED US, LOVED KIDS. UNLIKE GEORGE WHO HATES WATER, MILO WOULD STAND IN HIS WATER BUCKET EVERY CHANCE HE GOT. HE HAD HIS OWN KIDDIE POOL AND WOULD SNAP AT THE FISH PAINTED ON THE BOTTOM. WE HAD TO WATCH HIM NEAR OUR POND BECAUSE HE WOULD JUMP IN AND SWIM AROUND FOR QUITE AWHILE. HE LOVED TO CHASE OUR DUCKS BUT GRATEFULLY HE NEVER GOT NEAR ONE. THEY WERE SAFE WITH HIM THERE. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, HE USED TO CHASE COYOTES AWAY FROM THE POND EVEN.
IF YOU LOVE DOGS, YOU WILL LOVE THE STORY OF GIANT GEORGE BY DAVE NASSAR.

I really enjoyed reading Giant George. I felt the book was very entertaining. I had purchased it since I was going to be traveling and started looking at it prior to leaving and then didn't want to put down. We are familiar with danes and love the breed, and used to own one that was one in a million. We recently purchased another dane and she is also a solid blue like George, and we absolutely adore her. I enjoy reading a story involved in the raising of this breed and not just a statistics book. Great Job!!!

What a delightful and entertaining story. When Dave and Christie bought a Great Dane puppy little did they suspect that the "puppy" would grow to be the world's tallest dog. As big as he was though, he was the most gentle and sweet natured dog anyone could want. Their story of George the giant Great Dane is a fun read.

So many dog books are along the line of Old Yeller, where the dog you've formed a reader-bond with dies at the end and you end up bawling your eyes out. Not this one! George keeps you smiling and laughing, from descriptions of his counter-surfing prowess to the mayoral dignity with which he greets his "constituents." I recommend this book to all dog lovers, but especially to lovers of giant breeds - as an English Mastiff owner, I recognized many goofy, lovable traits that my big guy has as well. Best wishes to George for a long, happy, healthy life!

I bought this book after seeing a news article about Giant George. I loved it! It was well-written and told the good, the bad, and the ugly about sharing your life with not only a great dane but the world's biggest dog. I laughed and cried right along with Dave and Christie as they dealt with what life dished out to them. I read the book in two days. I could barely put it down. It has now landed a permanent place on my coffee table. What a great conversation piece! Also, It was interesting where the book left off...not going to spoil it for anyone... but I foresee (okay, I'm hoping for) a sequel.
