Impact Player: Leaving a Lasting Legacy On and Off the Field Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 216 ratings

Former Yankee Bobby Richardson played alongside Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, Joe Pepitone, and Yogi Berra during one of the most prolific dynasties in baseball history, and he remains to this day the only player from the losing team ever to be named World Series MVP.

In
Impact Player, Bobby shares his life story, including never-before-told tales from the Yankee clubhouse during the historic ’55-’65 pennant runs and World Series appearances. The book also features the unlikely friendship Richardson, a devout and outspoken Christian, shared with Yankee legend and renowned drinker and womanizer Mickey Mantle.

The perfect combination of faith and baseball,
Impact Player offers a rare glimpse into one of the most celebrated dynasties in the history of the game, and it paints a fascinating portrait of a life well-lived and the lasting rewards that come from knowing and loving God.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Any fan of baseball in the 1950s and ‘60s will remember Bobby Richardson, a solid player on the field and a devout man off it. He writes about growing up in South Carolina, his eleven-year career as a Yankee, and life after baseball. While narrator Bill DeWees doesn’t imitate the many players Richardson played with, he lends a comforting, almost folksy, voice to this memoir. And that’s what it needs. As Richardson reminisces, DeWees solidly delivers his stories about his devotion to God, his relationship with Mickey Mantle, and the strains on his own marriage. While there’s nothing too earthshaking in either content or narration, but this is an enjoyable listen for fans of the era."

From the Inside Flap

I don t know how many more innings I have yet to play. . . .
What I do know, however, is that I have lived a blessed life. I played more than fourteen hundred games in the major leagues, all with the New York Yankees. I played in seven World Series, three times on the winning team. I received individual accolades and made lasting friendships. I was able to coach and show young college players the Yankee way of baseball and, I hope, God s way of living. And I ve been asked to share the story of my faith more times than I can estimate.

If my life is a testament to anything, it is to God s mercy and grace. I have been blessed far beyond what I deserve. My aim in both baseball and life has been simple: to make an impact by being used by God in the lives of others.

When accounts of my life are written, I hope two things will be said of me. First, that I played baseball in a way that made my team better. Second, and more important, that I lived my life in a way that drew others to my Savior.

To God be the glory.
Bobby Richardson

Bobby Richardson played second base for the New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. During his career, he was named to seven All-Star teams ( 57, 59, 62, 63, 64, 65, and 66), he appeared in seven World Series, including three championship seasons ( 58, 61, and 62), and he remains to this day the only player from a losing team ever to be named World Series MVP. One of only eighteen players ever to hit a World Series grand slam, Bobby still holds the MLB record for the most consecutive World Series games played (thirty).

After retiring from MLB in 1966, Bobby went on to coach baseball for the University of South Carolina and later at Liberty University. An outspoken Christian, he played a vital role in the creation of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Baseball Chapel and is still an active speaker and evangelist.

Bobby lives in Sumter, South Carolina, with his wife, Betsy. They are the proud parents of five children and fifteen grandchildren.

David Thomas is a former sportswriter, the author of Remember Why You Play, and the cowriter ofAll In and SEAL of God. He lives in the Dallas Fort Worth area with his wife, Sally, and their two children.

I read the book in one sitting and it was a pleasure. I know Bobby Richardson and his family, mostly through their time at Ben Lippen School, including summer sports camps, so that made the book something special for me. But I was also struck with the genuiness of the account. It pictures the man and his family (Betsy is the best wife I have observed, apart from my own, of course!) as they are: modest, open, and generous, a great sense of humour (the male Richardson's are chronic practical jokers) and welcoming to others, with strong attachment to family and to their faith in Christ.

But if I had never known Bobby, the book would be well worth reading. Excellently written, fascinating (especially for a kid raised in Philadelphia near Shide Park but a Dodger fan) in its detail, one of the finest sports books I have read (and I'm addicted to books and to sports). From the first chapter one gets the sense that this book is not a slick promotional piece, but a fascinating 3-dimensional picture of real people.

While this is a baseball book, attractive to us old guys and to the young, the greatest impact of the book is Richardson's account of the sress of a baseball career on one's marriage, his realization of that stress and his decision to retire early. I recommend it for any guy whose career may tend to minimize our most important relationship,

From time to time I go on the internet and watch the 1960 and 1961 world series, which the book enriches with Bobby's comments. I'm going to do it again soon and I'll reread this book, but slower next time.

Bobby Richardson's belief system and ball playing has always had an impact on me. He played when I was 6 to 17 years old. Those are the real yankee teams. That 1961 team is the best team of all time. The personal information at the end was a surprise to me also because no one would know there was any issues in his life by looking at him. Thank you Bobby for 1960. The shock for all of us boomers hasn't worn off yet, and thanks for the catch. Also thanks for the relationship you have with God, as it inspires me to deepen mine. Fantastic book, everyone should read this book

Baseball fans will love it. He and his contributors did a really good job of writing a fact-filled, effective book, and inserted many great anecdotes. I was interested in a lot of his experiences and the history of the Yankees. I recognized a lot of the names, probably because I grew up in upstate N.Y. If I was more of a baseball fan, I'd have been able to focus more, and get through all the stats, plays and positions on the ball field. I skimmed them. The stories about his teammates were great, and I liked the positive, personal look into his life and his marriage. Richardson's personal witness was included, and some facts about Mickey Mantle that I didn't know. As a whole, it was interesting and uplifting.

The book was in very good condition. I enjoyed reading it and will be pleased to give it to my 17-year-old grandson who loves playing baseball, especially as a pitcher.

Impact Player is an inside look at the New York Yankees during the career of Bobby Richardson. Bobby was on some great teams and played with Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra. He tells many stories about being part of this Yankee dynasty. His special relationship with Mickey Mantle is very touching, especially his account of Mickey's last days before dying from liver complications. Bobby also shares his Christian faith and how that affected his playing days and relationships. He shares honest thoughts on how baseball impacted his family life as well. This is a great read for any Yankee fan or anyone who loves baseball history.

I just finished reading Impact Player. This is a story about the baseball player Bobby Richardson. If you love baseball, this is the book for you. Especially if you are a Yankees fan. I am not a Yankee, but I do like baseball. But...after awhile, I got tired of hearing all the plays and games that he had gone through. In about the last three chapters of the book is when it got good. This talked about how Mickey Mantle came to the Lord. That's pretty much when the Lord was brought into this book. Pretty much, it showed me what was more important to him...baseball or Jesus? After he retired is when Jesus became more real to him, but he still compounded on coaching and other things he did after retirement. But, his life did show a witness to his team-mates. You will have to judge this on your own. If you love baseball and like to read about plays, you will enjoy this book.Impact Player: Leaving a Lasting Legacy On and Off the Field
