Monsters of West Virginia: Mysterious Creatures in the Mountain State Kindle Edition
Every state and region has its own stellar cast of supernatural creatures, and West Virginia is no exception. Rosemary Ellen Guiley, the pioneering paranormal investigator, has spent a great deal of time in the Mountain State on the trail of entities, creatures, and all sorts of phenomena. These are her findings, featuring accounts of Mothman, the Grafton Monster, the Wampus Cat, the White Things, and other bizarre creatures, including Bigfoot, lizard people, and out-of-place panthers.
“Featuring tales of Mothman, the Sheepsquatch, and a host of lesser known West Virginia weirdness, Monsters of West Virginia is the perfect book for anyone with even a passing interest in West Virginia cryptozoology . . . a quick read by one of the most knowledgeable researchers of the paranormal in the country.” —Theresa’s Haunted History of the Tri-State

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2012I can still remember the bizzare story that came across the wire services in 1966 about a mysterious man-bird that chased two young couples in a car on a lonely West Virginia road. My first visit to that state was years later was after I had read "The Mothman Prophecies" by John Keel which detailed the strange events surrounding Point Pleasant, Wv. I wanted to see this mysterious state & visit the places that Keel mentioned & see what is was like for myself. Now there is a book which has collected a broad spectrum of "monsters" & high strangeness present in the mysterious mountain state.
It is our good fortune that Rosemary Ellen Guilley has authored "Monsters of West Virginia" in Stackpole's "monsters" series. Ms. Guiley has authored close to 50 books on different aspects on the paranormal & has done a great deal of work in the field -- to the point where she herself has experienced some of the high strangeness that other authors & researchers only write about. She has walked the trails in the infamous TNT area (alleged home of the Mothman), witnessed many different types of unexplained phenomena, spoken one on one with many of the experiencers of the paranormal, & even encountered a possible dopppelganger!! Ms. Guiley not only brings her excellent scolarship to this work, where she has uncovered new information about old cases, like the Grafton Monster, but she has also consulted with several experts in the field including Frank Feschino who has provided updated information on the Flatwoods Monster case of 1952.
It dosen't get much better than encountering strange blobs, flying manta rays, Snallygasters, a fresh look at Point Pleasants Mothman,& other creepy denizens that lurk in the shadows & hide in the hollars.
This is a fun book, but it should be noted that the encounters reported are by some very credible witnesses. These reported incidents do not all fall under the heading of folklore. There is an undertone of something very serious in the way the book is structured. Rosemary Ellen Guiley dosn't just tell interesting stories. Using her considerable background in the paranormal, she has connected some of the dots --- made connections between seemingly different types of phenomena that at first glance one wouldn't think could possibly have a connection --- like believe it or not, Sasquatch & UFO's !!
Be sure & stay tuned for the last chapter. The author details an investigation that she conducted in an "Enchanted Hollar" where a credible young couple that has a home there have experienced & continue to experience unknown creatures, strange lights, phantoms, & a whole array of the paranormal.
Yes, if you go to West Virginia, make sure your car is in perfect running order --- or your story may end up in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2016I love it! I just think that the idea of these creatures being from other dimensions and entering/exiting through portals between the dimensions somewhat far fetched, but it is slightly possible. Otherwise, excellent book and very well researched. I have found many of the Bigfoot accounts on bfro.net and have heard of many of these monsters, whether from reading things on the internet or watching Mountain Monsters and the AIMS team hunt them. GREAT BOOK!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2012I grew up in West Virginia hearing stories of unknown animals and high strangeness. One of my Junior High teachers encountered a creature like Bigfoot one day driving home on the lonely mountain roads, a "black panther" prowled around my grandparents house for several weeks, there are places up in the hills not far from the capital where you can find berries that are native to New Zealand or Japanese koi living in a old drainage pond. I myself have encountered at least two species that don't seem to have been documented by science. This book represents the most comprehensive overview of West Virginian monsters to date.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2014This book was wonderful.I couldn't put it down.My kids ages 13 and 11 wanted to hear the stories, then after they were acting jumpy I decided to read it on my own.I caught them into the book reading more stories later LOL We live in WV and they wanted to know what was out there.LOL
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2013IMO,this is a great collection of sightings, eye witness encounters, that covers all parts of the beautiful, but in places very strange West Virginia. I was amazed to hear of a few accounts and eyewitness sightings of bizarre and terrifying creatures, within walking distance from my home!! As an amatuer Bigfoot/Cryptid researcher.i was thrilled!!
This is the first book that I've read by Rosemary Ellen Guiley, although I've seen her name mentioned many times,as a certified expert of the unknown. As of today, finishing this book,I can agree with that statement, and I will be buying more of her books in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2014She's as objective as an author can be for the paranormal field. Well written. Her books are next to John Keel's on the shelf when it comes to "high strangeness".
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2022I think most people who choose to read this book probably believe , at least to some extent, that there’s a possibility of creatures we have yet to discover . This book was well written and easy reading. I liked that each type of creature was divided into categories. I found the mothman and Bigfoot stories the most interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monsters of West Virginia
C'est un livre très intéressant, même si je n'adhère pas à toutes les explications proposées par l'auteur. Faisant moi-même des recherches depuis quelques années, il m'a apporté beaucoup.
