The Death Committee Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 536 ratings

The New York Times–bestselling author delivers “a big, authentic novel” of the professional and personal challenges of three young doctors (The New York Times).

Three young men from different backgrounds have graduated from medical schools and become surgical fellows at a leading teaching hospital in Boston. They learn to become surgeons, to communicate with patients and families, and to be observed and appraised by their peers and professors on daily rounds. And each month—sometimes with dry mouth and rapid pulse—each attends the meeting of the Mortality Conference, known to all as the Death Committee, which examines every patient loss for possible human error, in order to prevent it from happening again. How the Death Committee affects and is affected by the lives, loves, and ambitions of three new doctors is the theme of this intriguing and profoundly moving novel.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm a retired RN. I really enjoy well written medical stories . When I ordered this I had no idea regarding the age of the book; that's probably a good thing - if I'd known ahead of time that it was written in the 60's, I doubt that I would have read it. I would have missed a good read. The story is about a 1st year surgical resident, a chief resident and his fellow resident both vying for the same position . It follows them through one year, both in the hospital and in their personal lives . Kidney transplants were just being perfected . I found it really interesting to read about medicine in our recent past. I became a nurse in the early 80's, so this is before my time, but my aunt and my mother were both nurses. It was kinda fun to read about their era. If you liked "House of God " by Samuel Shem, you should try this. It's similar , just not as snarky.

I am often critical of medical novels,I come from this world and often it is exaggerated and made dramatic when like all things---much of medicine is humdrum. This novel was just right. The story held my interest, and the characters are Real. It is an"on job" training story for young doctors, especially in the field of surgery. There are many medical cases to follow but also the personal lives of these young hard working trainees is a part of the plot. It is well written and well researched.

The Physician by Noah Gordon is one of my favorite books. I loved everything about it, and it's his best book, heads above his other works. The Death Committee is worth the time, but I never got as good a feel for the characters as I did in his other books. It's still pretty darn good though.

Noah Gordon's THE DEATH COMMITTEE is excellent! The plot is intricate, the characters believable, the research based action is accurate. This is the third of Gordon's books that I have read and I have yet to be disappointed. Increasingly it is difficult to find a novel that you want to read it forever, never get to the end, never have to go back to the beginning, reading that is as enjoyable as eating a good steak. Gordon always delivers. I would only suggest it for people who enjoy complicated books, but I certainly will tell everybody about it.

I have read happily all of Noah Gordon's books. My first encounter with his written work was when I was at college, almost five decades ago; I was a student and had the opportunity to read "The Rabbi" and follow the career and personal life of a man who enters this profession. Probably, Gordon's best known work is his trilogy about medicine as practiced a thousand years ago, then 175 years ago, and then 25 years ago. And, of course, his interesting and well developed characters serving in such professions are a hallmark of his writing. Using hospital mortality clinics is a great device to see "doctors" at various developmental stages dealing with their knowledge limitations and their emotions. The pace of the book was just right for the topic at hand. It reinforced my standing rule that recent medical school graduates and interns don't have sufficient experience to be trusted by me when treating my family. Good read.

Noah Gordon once again grabbed me from the very first chapter of The Death Committee, as he did with The Physician and Shaman it was a fast, interesting and very hard to put down book, I did not want it to end would have liked to have seen a follow up or two. The characters were all different, but compatible, the twists and turns were not expected and therefore surprising which kept me awake longer than I would have liked. Well done again Noah I can't wait to start on your next book in my collection.

I read it in english comparing it with the spanish version that I also bought. I know most of Noah Gordon's work and even when the subject is interesting and truthful in the way the different events occur in a M.D career, and I enjoyed the story, it does not seem comparable with the titles included in his trilogy.

sehr lesens- und lernes-wert: was man alles gut oder falsch machen kann. was man aus gordons büchern gewinnen kann, ist merkwürdig alters- abhängig und wiederum unabhängig.
