Top reviews from the United States

(This is the same review I wrote for Season 1's book, but it still applies to all three script books.) Has many deleted scenes and lots of background notes from Julian Fellowes on character back story, why things were done the way they were both for writing progression reasons, and because of historical accuracy (lots of asides about how households ran in those days). I re-watched the series on Amazon Prime and read along the footnotes with it (as if it were a sort of visual DVD commentary). It made me notice lots of little things in the background I hadn't noticed before (i.e., how Carson will never serve anyone during the breakfast buffet, or what did Mr. Pamuk actually mean when he said that Mary would still be able to appear untouched for her wedding - turns out there was a deleted line!). If you like Downton Abbey or find history trivia fun then I highly recommend this series of three script books.

I was expecting an occasional snippet of information from Fellowes, but he added very lengthy footnotes to nearly every page. It's wonderful! All the "deleted scenes" are included, and those little bonuses of info are fun. It's hugely in-depth, like Downton, behind the scenes, and interesting documentaries rolled into one. I love reading, and I read at a pretty high level. This is a weighty book and will take me a couple of months to finish - which is rare for me and something I'm VERY happy about. But if that's not something for you, you might check out one of the other Downton books. Please buy this for yourself and all your friends so they'll keep publishing for future seasons!!

I love these script books. I also have the Script Book from Season 1. After watching the series, these scripts bring each episode back to life, and I can do it wherever I choose. The commentary and extensive notes by Julian Fellowes really explain everything from where the ideas for the episodes come from to why a character says what he says. It's wonderful.! I only hope the scripts from Seasons 3 and 4 will come out soon so I can get them as well.

I am so glad I got this because I couldn't understand some of the phrases. I just WISH the show/script had deleted a lot of the Ethel story, quite boring and they could have included more of Matthew and Mary. The photo in the Script shows Matthew outside the train window with his military hat in the air - WE NEVER SAW THAT. Too much of that Ethel story, in fact, I skip over that in the Script and I fast forward on the DVD. Can't stand that story or the actress Amy.

I love the script books. You can read the entire series and know what the actors are saying if you miss something during the show. Mr. Fellowes had footnotes that are very interesting. He tells how the scenes were setup, shot and why he can to the conclusion of each set and story line.
Must reading for the die-hard Downton Abbey fans. I recommend books 1 and 2 also.

I planned to order the Kindle version until I read the reviews by those who had done so only to be disappointed when the Kindle version failed. Instead, I ordered the paperback which arrived two days later. The print edition is excellent but it is a thick book and not as convenient to read as the eBook format.

The script book is comprehensive with many explanations of why changes are sometimes made during filming or editing while also providing background information about where Julian Fellowes has drawn inspiration from family stories.

One explanation I hoped to find was why William Mason referred to Lady Mary simply as Mary when he asked Matthew Crawley if Mary had set a date yet for her wedding. Such familiarity would not set well with Mr. Carson.

Fun facts include that, in real life, Phyllis Logan is married to the actor who played the rather unpleasant Mr. Bryant and that Penelope Wilton's wish to act in a play in London led to Isabel's quarrel with Cora that prompted Isabel to head to France where she would be appreciated. This allowed an interesting storyline about feeding those who had returned from war and were unable to find work. Score one for the cooks while O'Brien once again proves to be wrong.

I couldn't be happier with this purchase. Not only does it add facets to the Downton Abbey production, it shows how the show moves from words on the page, through actor's interpretations, through director's management to the final product. Also you get to read the bits that were cut or changed from the script for whatever reason, and that is like a peek on set!!!!

Julian Fellowes is a complex person who is so in touch with dynamics in his own life that he is able to project hard choices in his characters' lives. He also knows the history of his nation so well that he can put actors into gripping, realistic circumstances. This script, with commentary that illuminates Fellowes' choices, is a personal writing course for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Erweiterte Originalfassung und Zusatzinformationen
Reviewed in Germany on March 2, 2014
