When Liz Talbot’s husband left her for a woman half her age, Liz put all her passions into her bakery. The problem is that fad diets and fitness crazes are ruining sales and she’s barely staying afloat. Liz’s luck seems to be changing when her ex dies without changing his will, leaving her the main beneficiary. Unfortunately one of the things she inherits is the advertising agency she left behind to pursue her dream of baking. Her partner? The newly widowed husband stealer—Brandi, with a heart over the i. As the new co-owner of Talbot Advertising, in the toilet since the death of her ex (that’s right, she’s now the proprietor of two failing businesses), Liz is more determined than ever to break out and make a name for herself as an artisan baker extraordinaire, providing her products can catch the eye of the Nabisco Food scout who is as elusive as he is mysterious.

From Booklist

The author of A New Lu (2005) returns with a tale of two businesses run by one woman. After her husband left her for the much younger Brandi, Liz Talbot throws herself into her burgeoning venture, the No-Bagel Bakery. Liz is hoping, despite the lingering fear of all things containing carbs, that her store will succeed nationally and be made into a franchise. But ex-hubby Teddy manages to throw a wrench in her plans when he has a fatal fall while on a mountain bike ride with his new wife. Liz is stunned to learn he hasn't changed his will, leaving her in charge of Talbot Advertising, the company they built together. Brandi is none too pleased, and immediately gets an injunction, forcing the unlikely pair to work together. Castoro's winning tale of a woman coming into her own in midlife will no doubt make fans of readers searching for novels that go beyond the usual focus of chick lit. Kristine Huntley

This book will not be everyones cup of tea, but as an older reader it was a fun and satisfying read . I was privileged to meet Laura and she is a dynamtic lady. If you get bored with the youngster alway getting the guy then you may enjoy her books.

While the cover and title make you believe that this will be a story surrounding pastries such as cake, the bakery in the story produces yummy, yeasty breads that will have you heading to your local bakery for an artisan loaf! I loved the premise that this is a woman in her mid to late forties, with grown children, who is focusing on her own passions after her husband leaves her for a "younger model." While I think it would be unrealistic to not show her anger and bitterness over the breakup of her family, Castoro manages to not linger on the negatives (which seems pretty difficult when you'd like to choke the younger, tan model!).

Liz Talbot, owner of the No-Bagel Emporium, and dater of the lame-o business owner seeking a thrill, shows herself to be smart enough not to take any old man who takes her out for dinner. I like how Liz is self-assured, even though she carries many of the esteem-ridden problems that many other women also face. At a wedding reception, Liz meets a handsome, broad-shouldered man that she refuses to exchange numbers or information with, and yet for weeks after she finds herself thinking about him. As she deals with the problems of settlements with the ex to getting the word out on her wonderful bakery, her personal life remains at issue.

I honestly really enjoyed this novel. I gave it four stars, instead of five only because I felt that the build-up (or some might say set-up) of the mid section of the book seemed to drag. You can see why she included the story lines and subplots that she did (such as with her grown children, etc), but at times I felt like skimming some of them to get at the heart of Liz's business and personal life. Overall, I still say this is a great, fun read. I could see myself adding this to my "beach read" stack anyday!

Even though I really wanted to sleep on a cross-country flight, I couldn't put this book down! I just loved it. The characters are interesting and have depth, the story is entertaining and believable, and it's thought-provoking (so it's a bit deeper than mere "entertainment"). I recommend it to anyone who wants intelligent entertainment when they read.

In theory the storyline has a lot of potential and parts of the book are quite amusing. Though I feel that character development is on the light side, it was enjoyable. I wanted a lot more about Sally, (her mother) and Liz's two daughters. I'm sure that Liz is smart enough to come up with creative ways to deal with Brandi than by getting in a fist-fight or trying to run her over with a car.

Overall, the book is moderately entertaining, and given the choice, I would rather read this book than try solving a sudoku puzzle, so it isn't all bad. Laura Castoro would have been better served With some judicious editing and the services of a competent proofreader - the book had so many incomplete sentences, dropped ideas, missing phrases, misspellings and repeated words that I think an editor might be wandering around New Jersey looking for a new job.

Delightful and cute little romance novel.

Just a bunch of drama. None of the characters were developed well. By the end of the book you don’t like, respect, or even understand anyone. It leaves you wanting in several areas.

If you are hungry, then prepare to be hungrier while reading this book. Liz Talbot owns a bread shop where she makes artisan breads but her bottom line is not in the black even thought her breads are some of the best in North Jersey.

Liz is also divorced and her husband has left her for a trophy wife who is in search of the perfect tan. The trophy wife, named Brandi, with a trademark over the "I" is constantly in Liz's face and in her life. Soon a death in the family will make these two enemies constant companions.

Liz meets a new man at a wedding and soon her life is headed in all kinds of different directions. She not only owns a breadshop but she soons heads a PR firm with Brandi as her equal owner.

This is a story about 3 generations of women and how Liz turns her life around with the help of her mother, her daughters, and a new man in spite of Brandi, with a trademark.

A fun read. This makes you want to head to your local bread and pastry shop and chow down!

This book revolves around Liz Talbot, whose ex-husband dies before changing his will to include the new Mrs. Talbot. The plot centers around the internal changes Liz goes through as she becomes her own woman; improving her financial and love life. Her daughters, the new Mrs. Talbot, her friend, and her mother are all key characters in the book. I was pleasantly surprised with the book. Strangely enough this book was one I'd already checked out at the library months before and then returned without reading. I didn't realize this until I got the book home this time. I recommend this book as a light and pleasant read.
