Splintered: A Splintered Novel (Splintered Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 2,458 ratings

A gifted teenager whose ancestor inspired a literary classic descends into a mystical under-land in this romantic, dark fantasy series debut.

Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

“Fans of dark fantasy, as well as of Carroll’s Alice in all her revisionings (especially Tim Burton’s), will find a lot to love in this compelling and imaginative novel.” —Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, starred review

“Alyssa is one of the most unique protagonists I've come across in a while. Splintered is dark, twisted, entirely riveting, and a truly romantic tale.” —USA Today

“Brilliant, because it is ambitious, inventive, and often surprising.” —The Boston Globe

“It’s a deft, complex metamorphosis of this children’s fantasy made more enticing by competing romantic interests, a psychedelic setting, and more mad violence than its original.” —Booklist

“Howard’s visual imagination is superior; a cavalcade of weirdness dances across the pages. . . . The story’s creepiness is intriguing as horror, and its hypnotic tone and setting, at the intersection of madness and creativity, should sweep readers down the rabbit hole.” —Publishers Weekly

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-This darker, modern update of Alice in Wonderland is more likely to please fans of Tim Burton's film adaptation than those of Lewis Carroll's novel. Alyssa, 16, is a descendant of Alice Liddell, the girl who was Carroll's inspiration for Alice. Her mother lives in a mental institution, and she herself struggles with hearing voices from insects and flowers. Do the women in her family suffer from a curse that can somehow be traced back to the original Alice? The opening chapters drag a bit, but the action picks up when Alyssa finds herself in Wonderland, fighting for her survival-and for her mother's sanity. Howard maintains a lush atmosphere throughout, reintroducing Carroll's characters as truly nightmarish monsters. Though Alyssa's ongoing quests can sometimes seem aimless and the requisite love triangle forced, teens looking for a creepy, descriptive read with a generous dollop of romance will gravitate toward this title.-Hayden Bass, Seattle Public Library, WAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

YA authors have used fairy tales and fantasy as a backdrop for contemporary stories for decades, and first-time author Howard is no exception. Relying on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland as the infrastructure, as well as Tim Burton’s fantastical movie landscapes for inspiration, Howard crafts a teenage skater girl, Alyssa Gardner, who feels compelled to throw herself down the rabbit hole in an attempt to cure her mother’s madness and quiet the ever-increasing chatter in her own head. But Alyssa does not make this journey alone. Childhood friend Jeb enters Wonderland with her, a constant grounding to the real world as they encounter Morpheus (who sports a hookah), Rabid White, Chessie, the Red and Ivory Queens, and other iterations of Carroll’s familiar characters. It’s a deft, complex metamorphosis of this children’s fantasy made more enticing by competing romantic interests, a psychedelic setting, and more mad violence than its original. With one test after another that she must pass, Alyssa soon learns that the only person she can rely on is herself. Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would've happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she's not writing, A.G.'s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

Gorgeous series!
After listening to this series on Audible Plus, I knew I must buy the hardbacks, but unfortunately these are not as popular as they deserve to be. I was apprehensive that Amazon states that Splintered, Ensnared and Untamed hardcovers are 8.25” and Unhinged is 8.75” (and although I don’t live in a country that uses imperial units, I can measure and covert - and obviously they’re all 8.50”)Just for the Splintered - I actually half expected and am a tiny bit disappointed that the letters are not green in this book - as it arrived last and all others really corresponded to the covers (Unhinged purple, Ensnared red and Untamed blue). But altogether they are so beautiful and the story is so heartwarming to me that I am definitely not disappointed by this purchase!

I don't even know where to start with this review - there were just so many amazing things! Let me start by saying A.G. Howard is a genius. A.Freaking.Genius. Though the first couple chapters dragged a little, once Alyssa went into the looking glass, I couldn't put this book down! Like, I legitimately got under my husband's skin by ignoring him for half a day over this book. Everything about Splintered is perfect. The writing is absolutely magical. The flow of language, the world building, the character development - everything was amazing. Splintered is written from the first person perspective - something that doesn't always work. But here, I can confidently say it was the right choice. There are twists and turns galore and I never knew exactly who to trust or what would happen next.

Wonderland - where do I even begin? The author paints a spectacular picture in words as she takes readers through a Wonderland completely different from the one we've come to know. The creatures are all fantastic in so many ways. For example, the White Rabbit... His name is actually Rabid White. The flowers aren't quite flowers and the Cheshire cat? You'll have to wait and see. But my favorite of all the Wonderland creatures is, of course, the hookah-smoking caterpillar.

Speaking of the caterpillar, his name is actually Morephus, and he's one of the two love interests in this story. I love him. LOVE him. Sure, he does a lot of things to serve his own interests, but he never really stops looking out for Alyssa. In fact, one of my favorite things about Morpheus is that he doesn't swoop in to save Alyssa every time she gets herself in trouble. Instead, he gives her the tools to save herself and lets her work it out - he lets her stand on her own. Morpheus is sexy in a dark and mysterious way (and he definitely knows it), but he's also loyal to a fault.

Which brings me to love interest number two: Jeb. While he seems to be an okay guy, Jeb just didn't do anything for me. It's not that his character was irritating, underdeveloped, or anything of that nature - he just wasn't my type. Unlike Morpheus, he does try to save Alyssa from everything - even before they get to Wonderland and sometimes from things she doesn't want to be saved from. The love triangle in this book is probably the best one I've ever read. Usually they annoy me, but this one just made sense - primarily because the two men were from two completely different worlds.

I loved that Alyssa wasn't overly whiney or dependent upon the men in the story. Of course, she did need saving from time to time, but what heroine doesn't? Overall, she held her own, made her own choices (even some I wanted to scream at her for), and was generally awesome. The one thing I didn't understand about Alyssa was why she was picked on for being a descendant of the "original" Alice. Granted, it has been quite a few years since I was in high school, but I don't think someone would have been picked on for being related to the inspiration for a famous children's book. In any case, Alyssa overcomes the bullies and remains a strong, vibrant protagonist.

The entire time I was reading, I was silently begging this book not to suck. I've been let down by so many YA books recently that I was honestly just waiting for something to go wrong - but it didn't. Splintered is such an amazing book. I will confidently call it my new favorite. Unhinged found its way onto my Kindle last night... Seriously, guys, you want to read this!

THIS BOOK! Those were the two words I kept repeating after I finished Splintered. I was kinda at a loss for words. I love Alice in Wonderland, so I was immediately drawn to this story months ago, plus the book has an incredible cover! Then I kept seeing great early reviews for this book and I just got more and more excited to read it. With my expectations pretty much through the roof, Splintered still managed to blow me away. I just ate up all the chaos and wonder that is Splintered.

Alyssa, our main gal and great great great granddaughter of the original Alice, was an awesome heroine. I loved her skater style and punk attitude. She is not the normal pretty girl heroine and I love her all the more because of it. Alyssa lives by her own rules and she has a tendency towards recklessness. She is also a very strong character who knows how to handle herself.

Then we have Jeb, who from what I have seen so far is the frontrunner. Jeb is a bit of a conundrum for me. I loved him, but then I would get incredibly frustrated with him. I felt as if he held Alyssa back at some points in his effort to protect her. It is clear he loves Alyssa, but I think he took it too far at points and acted as if she wasn’t capable of taking care of herself. Then again, there were moments from him that just melted my heart.

Now the counterpart to Jeb is Morpheus and I absolutely head over heels loved Morpheus. I think I should just let him describe himself: “Mysterious. Rebellious. Troubled. All those qualities women find irresistible.” And boy oh boy did I find him irresistible. I mean how could I not; blue hair, wicked masquerade markings, a devilish suit, leather pants, and a top hat made of moths, how was I ever supposed to resist? Now this made me question my sanity a bit because Morpheus really isn’t the smart choice. He is Wonderland through and through; which means danger, manipulation, chaos, and madness. But at the same time he is incredibly charming and underneath it all he really is a good guy. He may have questionable intentions, but when it matters most he comes through. Plus we can’t forget the dark sarcasm and wit. Alyssa can keep Jeb, I’ll take Morpheus.

Moving on to the love triangle. I am the first to admit that love triangles have the tendency to drive me nuts, but that wasn’t the case here. This was a love triangle I could enjoy because I was just as torn as Alyssa was at times. It was easy to see why she was torn and in all honesty it wasn’t overly prominent. I think it is clear from the get go who Alyssa is going to choose.

Aside from the characters, the world and plot in Splintered is fantastic. The world created is just spectacular. Splintered takes everything you thought you knew about Wonderland and twists it. I was able to vividly imagine the world and easily get lost in the story. I know pretty much every review for this book says this, but I will repeat it. The world building in Splintered is superb.

As I said, the plot is also fantastic. I was taken completely by surprise. The twist at the end is one I honestly never saw coming, didn’t even think to question it really. I was totally blindsided and I loved it. Some may say that the plot is a bit chaotic, and honestly it is, but what better way for the plot in a Wonderland inspired story to be. It doesn’t follow a straight line with easy connect the dots; it is more of a maze where the floor can fall out at any moment and descend into madness.

All in all, Splintered was a great Alice in Wonderland twist. Fans of the original Alice are sure to love this book and even those who are not fans of Alice will be able to enjoy Splintered. And did I mention Morpheus? Well I’m gonna mention him again. Morpheus. Morpheus. Morpheus. This book left me saying “Thank you, may I have another?”
