4.7 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

A “delightful . . . engaging” spiritual handbook for busy moms of all faiths by a marriage and family therapist, spiritual director and mother of five(Publishers Weekly).

Denise Roy combines the hard-won wisdom of a parent with the insights of meditation to create a spiritual practice that goes to the heart of everyday life: mothering with mindfulness. Through anecdotes, reflections, and specific practices, this book invites mothers to wake up and embrace their lives, discovering that they are always standing on holy ground.

Momfulness is a wonderful guide for conscious mothering in an all-too-busy world. I love this book!” —Michelle Borba, author, Twelve Simple Secrets Real Moms Know

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Roy combines her experience as a marriage and family therapist, a spiritual director, and a mother of five in this delightful book of meditations, a sequel to My Monastery Is a Minivan. Roy defines momfulness as "the spiritual practice of cultivating a mindful, compassionate, mothering presence," and outlines six spiritual lessons: developing true presence, practicing embodiment, paying attention, cultivating deep compassion, recognizing the sacred in all things and understanding the value of community. Each meditation begins with a quote, from the likes of Anne Lamott and Annie Dillard to Thich Nhat Hanh and Teresa of Avila; each includes a reflective piece—an essay, observation, or story—and each ends with a suggested practice. Roy's anecdotes are fresh and her storytelling colorful and imaginative. Some of her talent is lost, however, in the banal activities at the end of each meditation. For example, her entertaining tale of cooking lobsters with large rubber bands on their claws fizzles when readers get to the related activity suggestion of sharing family memories. She writes best when she draws from her vast reservoir of stories and refrains from preaching. Roy's varied experiences as a psychotherapist, a spiritual director, a foster mother and a biological mother ground her spirituality in an engaging book for moms of all faiths. (Mar.)

This book came out when my four kids were ages 2-10. It has been a godsend. Full of gentle wisdom, humor, and grace. Easy to dip into once in a while or follow as part of a more regimented mindful parenting practice. Steeped in solid Jesuit spiritual values, this makes a wonderful gift for a new parent or an old one!

This is a book I turn to when life is chaotic and I need to recenter myself. It helps me to reconnect with my kids and myself in the middle of the mess that life can sometimes be. I'm the type of person that wants to wait until things are "in order" to live, but this book reminds me that living is in the moment however messy.

This book is truely my favorite "mom" book so far. If you value mindful living and teaching your children to do the same, this is a great book. There are little "activities" or "meditations" at the end of each section. Ive highlighted all over this book and even took a bunch of notes. Im buying a handful to give to my closest mom-friends. A must read.

I have re-read this book four times now and just love it's uplifting message. I also bought copies for my class parents and my head of school as end-of-year gifts.

Although written for and marketed to a very Christian demographic, this work has a lot of value in it for mothers (and fathers) who are trying to cultivate mindfulness in everyday life. There are a lot of very practical exercises that can be woven into everyday life and reference to wisdom from a range of traditions. As a UK reader, some parts are a tad American but the value of what is being said isn't lost.
