The Big One: An Island, an Obsession, and the Furious Pursuit of a Great Fish Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 66 ratings

The Big One is to competitive fishing what Friday Night Lights was to high school football.” —News & Record (Greensboro)

A Forbes Best Sports Book of the Year

Published to rave reviews in hardcover and purchased by DreamWorks in a major film deal,
The Big One is a spellbinding and richly atmospheric work by a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist. Here is the story of a community—Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts—and a sporting event—the island’s legendary Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby—that is rendered with the same depth, color, and emotional power of the best fiction.

Among the characters, we meet: Dick Hathaway, a crotchety legend who once caught a bluefish from a helicopter and was ultimately banned for cheating; Janet Messineo, a recovering alcoholic who says that striped bass saved her life; Buddy Vanderhoop, a boastful Native American charter captain who guides celebrity anglers like Keith Richards and Spike Lee; and Wyatt Jenkinson, a nine-year-old fishing fanatic whose mother is battling brain cancer. At the center of it all is five-time winner Lev Wlodyka, a cagey local whose next fish will spark a storm of controversy and throw the tournament into turmoil.

The Big One is a rollicking true story of a grand American obsession. You don’t have to be a fisherman to relish David Kinney’s marvelous account of the annual striper madness on Martha’s Vineyard, or his unforgettable portraits of the possessed. It’s a fine piece of journalism, rich with color and suspense.” —Carl Hiaasen, New York Times–bestselling author

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though it will probably be shelved in either the sports or outdoors section, Kinney's account would be right at home in the anthropology department. As Kinney, a Philadelphia journalist, explains in his fun, easygoing prose, the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is more than just your run-of-the-mill fishing tournament. The monthlong competition and two grand prizes worth $30,000 each turn visitors and islanders into work-skipping, bleary-eyed (big stripers feed at night) fishing maniacs. Kinney provides an insider's view of striper madness by not only presenting the fish tales of Derby judges, experts and salty regulars, but by also wetting a line and participating. He discovers that what started in 1946 as an advertising scheme to get visitors to the island has become symbolic of Martha's Vineyard's continuing personality crisis between its blue collar, commercial fishing roots and its newer, wealthy persona. The book is a lot of fun as Kinney's day-in, day-out descriptions of the tournament itself—complete with accusations of cheating, bitter rivalries, health concerns and Cinderella stories—play out like a frenzied baseball season condensed into one month of triple-headers. From Booklist

The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is a five-week fishing tournament, but that description doesn’t really do it justice. The derby, which has been held annually since 1946, is no mere fishing contest. It is, depending on the participant, a quest, a near-religious event, a self-affirmation, or just a chance to prove you can catch the biggest fish. In this lively book, Kinney combines a first-person account of a single derby with a history of the tournament itself (and it’s a distinctly checkered history, with allegations of corruption and conspiracy, not to mention a few notable fatalities). He focuses on the personalities involved: the participants in the derby, the organizers, and the residents of Martha’s Vineyard, who for five weeks every year see their island turned into what amounts to a staging area for a sea battle. Fans of you-are-there accounts of sporting competitions will definitely want to read this one.

As an annual visitor to Martha's Vineyard I passed by this book in the Island bookstores this summer. There is a lot to do on MV and fishing isn't at the top of my list. I the fall I read a review of the book in The Cape Cod Times which motivated me to purchase the book on amazon.com. (I discovered my purchase price of a hard cover is about the same price the paperback will fetch in April.

The novel describes a world of Martha's Vineyard that the summer visitor never sees. Their annual fishing tournament is extremely well organized with hundreds of prizes for various catagories of fishermen. There are grand prize winners of a $30,000 truck and a $30,000 boat. They also hae daily prizes.

Like the title of the book suggests some people become obsessed with winning. People pan their vacations around the derby. Many go days without sleep or they sleep on the beach waiting for the fish to hit. Forget about having a contractor do work during the tourney...you'll find him at the surf or on a boat waiting for the grand prize winner to hit his hook.

If you like the Vineyard or fishing or good stories about human nature, this book is a good read.

I really enjoy fishing, but I'm usually somewhat reluctant about 'fishing books.' In many cases, it seems difficult to capture the feelings of being out on the water with a rod in-hand, the combination of intensity and relaxation, the maddening desire to spend every waking moment on the surf, in the jetty, or on a boat. In 'The Big One,' David Kinney does a phenomenal job of telling the parallel stories of one man's quest for a prize striper along with the overall narrative of the Derby in 2007. While fishing plays a major role in this book, it doesn't strike me as a book about fishing. It's a book about the men, women, and children who compete in this tournament as well as the tournament's impacts, both social and economic, on Martha's Vineyard. The stories of the current participants as well as some of the historic asides are consistently interesting and an equal mix of fascinating and humorous at times.

Overall, this is a fantastic book and a real page-turner. The only thing I didn't like was that it eventually had to come to an end.

David Kinney really grabbed the whole spirit and craziness of the MV Derby. I have fished it every year for the past 15 and this book was fantastic. I loved the stories from the various fisherman. The book covered the whole concept of 4,000 fisherman out there for a month as well as their drive, insanity, and love for fishing. I have yet to get one of those coveted brass pins, but there is still hope. There are so many seasoned veterans covered in this book. I see them occasionally in Menemsha, but now I almost feel like I know them.

    Nice Job David.

This book opens up the reasons some of us are so focused on fishing. This is not about recreation- it is about life and why we fish to catch the biggest fish or win the fishing derby. For some of us like myself fishing saved my life and is a major part of who I am.

Bought this book for my boyfriend after reading several reviews on line. I know NOTHING about fishing except that he LOVES it. I was a bit nervous thinking that it wouldn't be of interest to him, he doesn't read much but he couldn't put it down. It was everything he wanted in a story and he actually told me I can pick his books anytime! I just wish he'd let me pick his shirts too :)

A great page turner about the MV derby. It is very well researched and the text rings true. This may be this summer's "must read" book.
