The Whispering Room Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 168 ratings

A Big Easy policewoman tracks a serial killer determined to root out evil genetics by killing off a line of men in this psychological thriller.

Work is a welcome refuge for New Orleans homicide detective Evangeline Theroux. Feeling suffocated by her new baby, in whose eyes she sees only her dead husband, she throws herself into a high-profile murder case.

Reclusive writer Lena Saunders offers Evangeline a provocative theory about the crime: it is the work of a lunatic vigilante. Lena spins the sordid story of Ruth and Rebecca Lemay, whose mother brutally murdered her male children in an insane effort to root out an “evil” gene. The girls survived and grew to adulthood—but one is carrying on her mother’s grisly work.

When the case takes a terrifyingly personal turn, Evangeline’s whole life will depend on a crucial, impossible choice: the lesser of two evils.

Having just read three Amanda Stevens books in a row, this author is now on my list of must reads. The Devil's Footsteps kept me up late at night to finish. The Whispering Room is just as suspenseful, with lots of twists and turns in the tale. I love the character of Evangeline. Although she's in a career primarily dominated by males, she is a woman any woman or mother can relate to. The plot in this story is very creative. Amanda Stevens writes a book that may tell a similar story to other suspense novels out there, but the reason I'll keep reading her books as opposed to some of those other authors is that she creates a story in a lush setting, with well drawn characters, and plenty of interesting plot points. Job well done.

Amanda Stevens is one of my favorite authors, and this has probably been one of my favorite books by her. It edges on some romance, but it is primarily a slightly paranormal mystery. Just when you think you have it all figured out, it twists and keeps you guessing. Really a page turner. Take my advice. Buy this one, as well as the Devils Footprints, and get a blanket, a cup of tea, and a cozy seat....really you will be happy you did.

Amanda Stevens is now on my list of writers to watch for. The Whispering Room has a sympathetic protagonist in Evangeline and interesting supporting characters. The story is wonderfully embellished with descriptions of the lush surroundings, putting you right in the story. A really big thing for me personally was that I could never guess what was coming.
A believable heroine, a suspenseful story in a wonderful setting--what more could a reader want? I highly recommend this book. Now, I'm off to find another one by Ms. Stevens.

This book has lots of twists and turns. If you are deathly afraid of snakes - don't read it. I thought it was fairly good, but I prefer a longer, more complicated mystery.

This book has strange characters, snakes (which I personally detest!)and enough crooks and crannies to make you want to put it down for a while just to clear your head. The storyline is great and I enjoyed that but at the end there was a lot thrown at you to justify the "rest of the story"! Amanda Stevens is an excellent storyteller but I just didn't feel I could give it 5 stars due to the over explaining at the end.

This actually was two horror stories, told separately becoming one in this exciting detective, mystery story with a romance thrown in. In a background of New Orleans after the hurricane, and with the swamps good guys and really bad ones. It all comes together in the end and although has some very scary moments, is relatively a nice read. Get an apple, a warm sunny spot and maybe a cover for your legs and dive in. You won't be sorry.
