Touching Stars (Shenandoah Album series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 341 ratings

A war correspondent’s return to his ex-wife and their children tests what it means to be family in this emotional saga by a USA Today–bestselling author.

Gayle Fortman has built a good life for herself and her three sons as an innkeeper in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. She has even maintained a cordial relationship with her ex, charismatic broadcast journalist Eric Fortman, covering with the boys for his absences and broken promises. Luckily Travis Allen, her closest neighbor, has been a loving surrogate father to the boys and her own best friend.

Then, on the eve of oldest son Jared’s graduation, Eric returns, having nearly lost his life in Afghanistan. Worse, he has lost his way and his courage, and needs a place to recover. Gayle realizes this might be the last chance for her sons to establish a real bond with their father, and offers him a summer at the inn and a chance to put things right. Gayle and Eric are all too aware that their onetime love and attraction are still there. But can the pieces of their broken lives be mended, or are they better laid to rest?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The setup of Richards's 50-somethingth book is wince-inducing: Gayle Fortman's ex-husband, hot-shot TV journalist Eric, has had a nasty run-in with the Taliban; at Gayle's invitation, he returns to the Shenandoah Valley, Va., B&B they bought together to convalesce. Eric, who is in a relationship with L.A.-based fellow journo Ariel Kensington, knows little about the three sons he left behind 12 years ago: 13-year-old Dillon, 16-year-old Noah and 18-year-old Jared. Over 500-plus pages, each boy confronts his father in his own way, while Gayle harbors hopes that Eric will stay. Sidelines include Jared's relationship with hot-to-trot Brandy Wilburn (which may jeopardize his chances at an MIT scholarship), and a neighbor, Travis Allen, waiting in the wings for Gayle. Romance Writers of America award–winner Richards gets the emotions right and writes credible dialogue when the adults speak to children. The result is a fine, light family melodrama. (July)

From Booklist

Twelve years ago, Gayle and Eric Fortman divorced, leaving Gayle to raise their three sons alone while trying to make a success of their sprawling country inn nestled in Virginia's tranquil Shenandoah Valley. It was no place for adrenaline-charged broadcast journalist Eric, who was more at home in the world's most dangerous combat zones until the day he nearly died covering the war in Afghanistan. Weakened and traumatized by his ordeal, Eric is invited to spend the summer recuperating at Gayle's bed-and-breakfast, where he can not only restore his health but also repair his damaged relationships with his sons. It's an uphill battle on both fronts, and Eric is surprised to find that it's easier to mend a shattered spirit than it is to win his family's trust and respect. Magically interpreting the emotional resonance of love and loss, betrayal and redemption through luminously drawn characters, Richards' latest installment in her irresistible, quilt-inspired Shenandoah Album series glows with transcendent warmth, wisdom, grace, and compassion. I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley and some of my relatives have items which are in Big Meadows. I was very familar with how families were sent from their homes when the Skyline Drive was built. It was very interesting because a lot of the places which were mentioned in the book were places that I had been to at one time or another. Miss Richards has a flair for captivating and holding your attention in the entire book. .For anyone looking for something quick and keep you sitting on your seat. You will love this book!!!

Detailed and in depth perfectly describe the characters in this story, one of the Shenandoah Album series. In this story, we are reaquainted with previous characters introduced in earlier tales at the same time that we get to know Gayle Fortman, owner of Daughter of the Stars B&B, her three delightful teenage sons, and her nearest neighbor, Travis Allen. Into this mix which hints at a romance between Gayle and Travis that has never gotten off the ground, but which shimmers around them whenever they share a glass of wine and conversation, comes Gayle's ex-husband, a TV newsman recently returned from a disastrous trip to the Middle East, where his cameraman was killed and Eric nearly lost his life.

Eric is sick, seriously underweight, and fraught with nightmares along with serious doubts about what to do with himself. Gayle invites him to recover at the B&B so that he can reconnect with the boys, who barely know him. Each reacts in their his own way to his father's presence: the eldest with surprise that his father comes home; the middle child with anger; and the youngest--whom Eric had never wanted--with enthusiasm and an endearing desire to get close to the man he barely knows.

Through the summer during Eric's recovery, Gayle has much to keep her busy--the B&B, her assistance with Travis during the archeology camp he holds for local middle-schoolers, and her gradually changing thoughts surrounding her ex-husband. Does she want to get back together with him? Does he? What will her sons think about such a move and how will they react? Other details that flesh out the humanity each of these characters display make them more real through each page-turning.

At Gayle's 40th birthday celebration--something she never would have asked for, but which Eric insists on organizing--several decisions come to the fore, and are settled only after a storm that threatens both the dig site and the safety of both Eric and his youngest son. Not a routine denoument to all this, but rather a replication of hard realities with that glimmer of hope for a relationship for Gayle, if only she can decide where she and Eric will go next. A tale I'll eagerly re-read for he same sense of satisfaction this first reading provided.

As a lover of quilts and the stories which enhance my knowledge of patterns along with entertaining me, I've yet to be disappointed by Emilie Richards.
Touching Stars is not her latest effort but it is the one most recently read by me. The main plot is enhanced by the story within the story woven in as evening entertainment for young people trying their hands at an "archeological dig". Both stories' surprising resolutions were gratifying. The struggles of the main characters with letting go and truly getting on with their lives struck home. Forgiveness, it appears, is more than pushing back or swallowing the anger fueled by serious hurts. I am sending it along to my niece serving in Iraq hoping it will bring her respite from days filled with snipers and heat, etc.

I have read a lot of Emilie Richards books and enjoyed them all. This one thought was slow getting into, too many characters, and story lines going around. Hard to get from her ailing ex-husband coming home to be with their boys for the summer; a too good to be true neighbor who had become a absent sort of father to her boys; s summer excavation of an old house; it goes on. It was just not what I had thought it would be. It is long and was hard for me to get through it. I knew what the ending was going to be but it took a long time to get there.

Although this is the fourth book in the series it can stand alone. Characters from the previous books are in the story but only as minor characters, The story is compelling and realistically portrays life's challenges. An excellent, satisfying read.

I loved this book and it was the first Emilie Richards book I had read, but it will not be the last that’s for sure.
Empathy and compassion were two words that described this authors work. I feel all fingers and thumbs trying to write a review that makes sense. I am sorry, I am still all caught up in it. But five stars is right
