The Ladies' Room Kindle Edition
A Wall Street Journal bestseller.
Secrets told in the church ladies' room are supposed to stay in the ladies' room. But that doesn't mean that what Trudy overhears there during her great-aunt Gertrude's funeral won't change the rest of her life.
Trudy has a daughter in the middle of a major rebellion, a two-timing husband who has been cheating for their entire married life, and a mother with Alzheimer's residing in the local nursing home. She doesn't really need a crumbling old house about to fall into nothing but a pile of memories and broken knickknacks.
Billy Lee Tucker, resident oddball in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, lived next door to Gert, and in her will she leaves him the funds to help Trudy remodel the old house. That's fine with Billy Lee, because he's been in love with Trudy since before they started school. And just spending time with her is something he'd never ever allowed himself to dream about.
A beautiful home rises up from the old house on Broadway, and right along with it rises up a relationship. But is Trudy too scarred from what she heard in the ladies' room to see a lovely future with Billy Lee?

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018Trudy has no idea that her life will never be the same again after the funeral of her great-aunt Gertrude. In the ladies room she overhears her nieces talk about the adultery of her husband . When she inherits Gert's house, Trudy decides to move immediately. The house needs a lot of work and Billy Lee, who was friends with Gert agrees to help her with everything. Nobody else wanted Gert's house because they only saw a rundown house and a money pit. What were Gert's intentions when she left the house to Trudy?
While she's living in her new home Trudy realizes that she wasted a lot of her good years on her cheating husband. Her eyes have finally been opened. Not everyone in the town understands why Trudy spends more and more time with Billy Lee and she neglects the comments and rumors. Trudy's aunt was a tough and not a very pleasant person, however more and more secrets are being revealed that shet a different light. Can Trudy finally live the life she always wished for?
While she was married Trudy did everything for her husband and her daughter, putting aside her own needs. Her husband wasn't an easy person to live with, but she put up with it all because she loved him. Trudy feels betrayed and now finally stands up for herself. She went out of her way to make everything look perfect. I loved reading on how she stepped out of the shadow and showed the world that she was no longer someone to mess with. The friendship with Billy Lee is endearing and I was hoping they'd be brave enough to let love in.
The Ladies Room is a beautiful story about finding yourself and believing in a second chance at love. I love it when a book makes me feel many different emotions and I really enjoyed The Ladies' Room because of this. Billy Lee is a skilled craftsman and he makes beautiful furniture. While reading about the stunning pieces he makes for Trudy I was wishing that I could visit her house so I could see them in real life. Carolyn Brown's writing style has a lovely easy flow that immediately pulled me into the story. The Ladies' Room is a heartwarming story that captivated me from beginning to end.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025A sweet story of how a loss becomes an even better gain with well developed believable characters. Somehow Brown turns an innocent story into a page turner that is difficult to put down. When you do, you’ll find yourself rushing back to it simultaneously wanting to continue reading but not wanting the story to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2025From the first page, I just loved this book. A fast read because I could not put it down. So many books have basically the same plot … boy mets girl and the rest you can figure out. This book has a plot I never would have thought of….so refreshing.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2015With all due respect to an obviously very successful (read: published) author, I am sorry to say that this is a mediocre book. The premise, set up in the attention-grabbing first chapter, was fun, and interesting: wouldn't we all like to be the proverbial fly on the wall when others are talking about us. Unfortunately, the book goes pretty much down hill from there. As others here have commented, I too thought this book must have been written at least forty years ago, or if not, it must have been SET in the days prior to the women's lib. movement, because it seemed so dated. I also went back to the copyright page after reading it, just to check. People have mentioned the lack of cell phones and other modern electronic devices, but come on, how about nary a reference to TELEVISION (with the lone exception of renting movies to watch on TV, which doesn't occur until the last chapter). The "love story" was totally predictable. The complete about-face of the protagonist from naive wimp to empowered "wonder woman" might have been easier to swallow if it didn't happen literally in one day. Again, my constant quibble: where were the editors to put the brakes on Brown's repetitiveness. How many confrontation scenes did we need to get the idea that she was finished with her spouse? And what was our hero doing for the past twenty years, without a single friend or acquaintance in his life? Did he never, ever have occasion to take the Caddy out of the garage? Nice and good he may have been, but I found it believable that the townies thought him a weirdo.
This was my first Carolyn Brown book. I think I'll give the others a miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book
A great heartwarming story of family life in a small town. Full of drama love happiness and growth. I love these characters. It was definitely a slow burn type of romance but one that was beautiful to watch evolve. The narration was excellent as always.
