The Silver Ghost (Sarah Kelling & Max Bittersohn Mysteries Series Book 8) Kindle Edition
Sarah Kelling and her husband, Max Bittersohn, have made names for themselves tracking down stolen paintings, sculptures, and, when necessary, the occasional murderer. But this is the first time they have been asked to find a missing Rolls Royce. When Bill Billingsgate’s prize 1927 New Phantom disappears, they head for his estate on the Massachusetts coast, arriving—to their horror—just in time for Billingsgate’s annual Renaissance fair. Donning period dress, they grab pints of mead and start searching the crowd for the thief. Instead they find a corpse. When the local police bungle the investigation, Max and Sarah take it upon themselves to find the killer. In the course of their search, they confront a car thief, corruption at a radio station, and a horde of murderous bees. If this is the Renaissance, Max and Sarah can’t wait to return to the present.

About the author

Charlotte MacLeod (1922–2005) was an internationally bestselling author of cozy mysteries. Born in Canada, she moved to Boston as a child, and lived in New England most of her life. After graduating from college, she made a career in advertising, writing copy for the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company before moving on to Boston firm N. H. Miller & Co., where she rose to the rank of vice president. In her spare time, MacLeod wrote short stories, and in 1964 published her first novel, a children’s book called Mystery of the White Knight.
In Rest You Merry (1978), MacLeod introduced Professor Peter Shandy, a horticulturist and amateur sleuth whose adventures she would chronicle for two decades. The Family Vault (1979) marked the first appearance of her other best-known characters: the husband and wife sleuthing team Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn, whom she followed until her last novel, The Balloon Man, in 1998.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2021I first found her books in the 1980s. I have enjoyed most of the books in her 4 series and even the ones not my favorites are still fun! This is one of the better ones, one I re-read a lot. I bought the eBook because it is one I re-read, so in a pinch I always have something good to read. McLeod, Christie, Sayers & Norton are my fall back choices in need!

Well Received!
What a time one has reading about how the other half lives, loves?, spends their money and their time...even if they are shatters and living off the foolishness or bad intent or bad advice or bad , bad , bad practices of themselves and others.
How the good shine out in MS Macleod is books.
Add a little romance and some cuddling and you have a really great story to read and share...aloud and with gusto!
I really liked this one. Plot a little convoluted at times and in the end all is made clear. Was pondering about the perpetrators from near the outset of the story...watch out for visitors from the past and was satisfied when proved right minus the details which were revealed toward the end of the tale.
Really loved the setting for this one...neo nazis? Then, too? How horrible is that! She must have been paying attention better than most...here we go again decades later. What a shame!
Anyway, this one was worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020I've been gradually making use of deals to rebuild my Sarah/Max collection on my kindle, so of course I bought this when it was marked down.
Rereading it after years away was wonderful. In fact, it was so wonderful that I dug up the others in this series that I had accumulated, and re-read them. And then I came back and paid full price for the volumes I was missing. I am currently finishing my Grand Tour of the series, and I know I'll be very sad when I've re-read them all.
These books were written before the "cozy" category existed, so they don't follow the cozy formula. But the main characters are intelligent, caring people who behave well and are kind and responsible. There's a thread of humor throughout, and decency is definitely valued. They're beautifully written, in a light and easy prose. Reading them puts me into a world where people behave as well as they can manage, look after each other, feel a sense of family and civic duty, and enjoy their lives, no matter how weird they are.
I find this juncture of history very uncomfortable -- since I am a member of what Karl Rove used to scornfully call "the fact-based community," I know I am living in a pandemic that is killing thousands of Americans every day and overwhelming hospitals, with the crazed remnants of a truly nightmarish Presidency not yet cleansed from the White House, aka The People's House.
These books have been a wonderful comfort, and have reminded me that people leading their daily lives with decency, honesty, and care for each other are what has always made America great.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2020Loved the story. Fun trying to keep up with Who’s Who. A great deal of the findings of the mystery solvers was left out of the story which felt a bit unfair but kept the story flowing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2023All of this series of Kindle books have been badly edited and/or proofread, with numerous typos, misspellings, and random punctuation mistakes, but this one is worse than most. Barely a page goes by without some noticeable error, which is irritating and disruptive for the reader. It’s a shame, because Charlotte MacLeod is such a good writer and her books are so much fun. So don’t let this stop you from reading the book, but know what you’re getting into.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2020This book is certainly not up to the standard set by this wonderful author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2024Wrting style/tone brought to mind those British country manor murder mysteries — books to telly with loads of suspects.
Enjoy a breezy solid mystery by the pool!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2016Fun, Funny, very well written - altogether charming characters and plot twists. You'll get hooked on this author and series - kind of zany!

4.0 out of 5 stars rollicking fun
I have to say that if this was the first Charlotte Mcleod book I'd read, I might have been daunted by the first few pages, which spend an inordinate amount of time describing mediaeval dresses and giving summaries of characters. However, as a fan of the author I persisted, and enjoyed the lively romp that is the rest of the book.
