The Germans on the Somme (Images of War) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

This highly illustrated book covers the activities of the German Army on the River Somme throughout the long years of The Great War. The initial fighting in 1914 was against the French prior to the arrival of the British Army. The 1916 Allied Offensive eventually resulted in the German withdrawal but only at a terrible cost to both sides. The 1918 Kaiserschlacht saw the Germans return, albeit briefly. Each phase is covered from the German perspective using primary and secondary sources. In addition to the wealth of splendid/fully captioned photographs, there is an authoritative general text and a useful chronological order of events. Being arguably the most evocative area in British military history, much has been written on the Somme. What makes this splendid book so different is the author's successful attempt to view events through the eyes of our adversaries.

A well written stugy of the Battles of the Somme, using German source materials and photos. While the vast majority of work done on the Somme is from the British point of view, this work gives the reader an important understanding of how the Germans saw the battle. A fine study of German tactics, as well as a chilling account of the suffering and loses. I finished this work, maveling at the strength and determination the common German soldier in the worst of trench warfare.

This book has a lot of information on the history of the Germans on the Somme for the duration of the First World War. Since I am somewhat new to study of this war, the information on specific locations was more detail than I had read before, but the writing is big picture, not tactical information.

My biggest complaint (docked 1 star) is the desperate need for a map! The author and publishers seem to believe that anyone reading this will have intimate knowledge of every city, village or hamlet in this area of France. The only map in the entire book is a copy of a German postcard celebrating the German March 1918 offensive.

There are two general types of layout in the Images of War series, one that has about an even mix of text and pictures, the other has a few pages of text followed by many pages of picture. This is a 50-50 mix of text and pictures.
